Expandable Broadheads

I was thinking about switching from normal broadheads to expandables, but I am still not sure about it. How many people shoot exandables and do they work?

First I must get the "legatlities" out of the way. Please don't use mech's as a bandaid for a poorly tuned bow. Bow tuning is equally important here....Ok, having said that....

Mech's are awesome. They cut big holes which equate to more blood loss. Some guys don't like them, and that's fine. Good, quality mechanical work very well. Rocket, Rage and G5 to name a few.

I used the crimson cuda's last season and left a blood trail that was absolutley massive. I am how ever considering the Rage expandables. I'm hear nothing but good things about them

I have been using them for about 5 years now without ever having one fail to open. And they die real fast with a 2" hole thru their lungs. Easy to find when you see them fall over too.

i am going to be using rage 2 blades this year.

i shot rocket hammerheads last year. good results but blades tend to curl over.i had a grim reaper not open 2 years ago so iwon't beshooting those again. ill be trying the rage 2 blade this year. heard nothing but good stuff about them.

Expandables are not legal everywhere. You can't shoot through the mesh on ground blinds with them. And some ranches have a "no expandables" policy. Having said that, I am looking forward to trying the Rage 2 Blade this year.

Spitfires..been shooting them for 2 years and see no reason to change(expandables). I may kill something w/ a slick trick(fixed) this year to see what all the hype is about.
Is your bow shooting hard enough for expandables?

Also maker sure you have enough KE to get deep penetration w/ them, unless you using the newer styles like Rage or something similar.

I shoot tightpoint fixed blade broadheads and love them however i definatley wouldnt be opposed to shooting expandables. I would probably go with the rage 2 blade. Ive heard nothing but good things about them

I cant speak for other brands, but i have used NAP Spitfires and i have no desire to shoot another. Massive blood trails a blind man could follow, but normally you dont have to follow it, you will see them fall. Never had any problem with them not opening either.

Just remember that anything that moves can and will fail at some point. Also, just be sure that you are not falling for all of the marketing hype. Fixed blades have worked great for approximately 3,000 years. If you are shooting fixed blades and are having success, why spend the money on new blades?

RE: Expandable Broadheads

I've shot a few deer with expandables. I shoot Montecs now, but thats just because I like simple, and I like being able to sharpen my own broadheads.

The expandables I have used gave me nothing but dead deer. I still use Hammerheads for turkeys. By and large, expandables are single use items, so don't be distrought if you tear them up after one firing. They fail only in very RARE instances, and quite often there is a bit of user fault involved. Anything that moves can fail, but you can of course take precautionary steps to prevent this.

Of dozens of different kinds of b-heads I've used and tested on deer, NOTHING has compared to the incredible penetration and the exceptional accuracy of Rocket Steelheads.

The 2 Blade will get better penetration most likely, but more importantly it has the bigger cutting diameter (2")

????????? WHAT 100 gr tip is 100 gr wheather its a fixed or mechanical........ has nothing to do with KE

Roskoe 07-11-2007 02:05 PM

RE: Expandable Broadheads

I think the reference to KE has to do with the amount of energy it sometimes takes to get the expandable to open up in the first place. This is fairly high with some of the original expandables where the blades have to swing around past center to open. Almost insignificant with some of the newer designs like the Rage.

I am shooting a 50lb bow...is that good enough for good penetration with expandables?

I've shot both, but currently shooting muzzies 125 fixed position. Both have their advantages and like most things it boils down to personell preferance and experience.I don't shoot mechs. i just don't want to add one more moving part to my bow that (could) malfuction.Good luck with whatever u decide.

Roskoe 07-11-2007 09:05 PM

RE: Expandable Broadheads

Don't know personally. But there is a bunch of stuff on Rage's website that suggests that they will open up fine with bows as light as 45 lbs.

I have a few left over from my previous hunting days back in the early 90s. I don't remember the product name but they had two blades, a green body, and used an O-ring to hold the blades. How would these compare to current expanding broadheads, and should I use them this season to hunt whitetail?

I shot thunderheads 100 for about 18 years but I have to say my buddy Todd talkedme into trying the wasp jack hammers and I never looked back. Huge holes and quick dyeing deer I will never go back, I have never had a single problem with them!! I am looking at trying or at least experimenting with the piston point this summer.. Walt

RE: Expandable Broadheads

I guess I'll be the one to say it... DO NOT just screw the things onto your arrows and go hunting. The first thing a smart hunter does is check to make sure all his equipment is working properly. That goes double for expandable heads. Make sure the blades move freely.

Of the five packages of expandables I've bought for testing - all were popular, highly respected heads that are still on the market - only one pack contained heads I felt were ready to hunt with. All the rest needed work before the blades would swing freely. One batch was so screwed up I had to literally use pliers and pull darn hard on the blades to force them open.

After working them over, all heads functioned properly but the experience wrecked any confidence I might have had in expandables.

When you hear stories about blades not opening, that's likely a person who didn't inspect them before using them.
