Has anyone hunted western maryland?? I was curious how it is and wouldn't mind giving it a try in both archery and rifle. I know the landscape is different than eastern maryland.
thanks for the help!

Much more moutains, rockand hardwood hills. Less farmable land. Racks dont grow as big as frequently as they do in central andeastern shore counties in MD. Plenty of deer, bear and turkeys though in Western MD.

Cut my teeth bowhunting the Fredrick City watershead, off of 15N, Loads of deer up there. We mainly hunted the tops of the hills, in thick tangled grape vines, etc. I'm talking bow hunting here. Gun season was a fiasco-- too many hunters.20 years ago, the gypsy moth devastated the hardwoods up there, but 5/6 years later, the lack of canopy gave way to some of the thickest, nastiest deer habitat you'd ever seen. Unfortunately, I just saw on the news today that the gypsy moths are back, and with a vengence.

Hunting in western MD is ok, but the terrain is much more demanding than other parts of MD. The racks aren't anything to brag about. Guides in the area will boast about seeing a tall spike at the local watering hole if that gives you any idea about the common rack size there.
There is more of a selection (bear, good turkey population) as already mentioned. If you are looking for both good deer numbers and nice racks then you would be best served to hunt from Frederick, MD and east from there (again, as already mentioned).
Central MD and the Eastern shore both have great size bucks and even sika deer in certain areas of the Easter shore.

HAHA Where have i been on this question?I find it funny that someone is actually interested in hunting this part of maryland! What Chaz said is all completely true! I would stick with the eastern shore! The only plus side i can think of is plenty of state game land in allegany and garret counties, but they can get very crowded and frustrating!
If you still insist on hunting in western maryland! I would check out Green Ridge State Forest, it has plenty of land and probably the most popular!? That is unless you know someone with private land if so hunt that! Good luck!

What areas of central maryland would be worth while to hunt rifle instead of shotgun... I have some alright archery spots already.. but I would still consider making a trip for archery out to central Md.

you can only kill 6 deer up here.. 1 buck 1 doe for bow, muzz, rifle,,,,,, i can gurantee you that if u come up here to dans mtn(state ground.) on the 1st! ,tue, wed,(after sat, sun, mon)of rifle season on9,510 acres you might see 5 people! an thats no lie!!!!!! and thats not jus cause everyone has killed everything its because no one hunt anymore like they used to... 2 week long season 3 saturdays an 1 sunday no one takes time off work....bowhunting. you jus have to put your time in on the state ground .like i said9,510 acres plenty of room for some bowhunters... alot of poeple wont go far from the road(no atv's) if your not afraid to walk you can get away from everyone without a proablem.. oh yeah dont be lookin for a record book buck either
