How many pins do you prefer??
How many pins do you prefer and why?Right now I have a five pin sight but, because I will mostly hunt out of a treestand, I am thinking about switching to a 1 pin. For those of you who use 7 pin, please be sure to explain in detail why in the HELL you do!!:D:D

RE: How many pins do you prefer??
One. Pin gap is just too close together anymore. Multiple pins just confuse me, and for hunting I set my pin for 25 yards......1" high at 20, 1" low at 30. Doesn't get much better than that.

RE: How many pins do you prefer??
I like to use a 2 pin setup for hunting. 25 and 35 yards.
Sometimes I only use one at 25 or 30 though. I change it up year to year. |
RE: How many pins do you prefer??
I use one pin set at 20 yards.
I typically huntsome sort of funnel. I don't hunt field edges too often. So, where I hunt, there is no need for more than one pin. Of the twentysomeodd deer I've killed, the average distance is 17 yards. One pin is just fine. |
RE: How many pins do you prefer??
I shoot with three pins, 20-30-40ydsthough I'm considering only using two this year 25 & 35 yds.
|
RE: How many pins do you prefer??
The first deer i ever shot at with my bow i missed on the first shot. I was lucky enough to get another shot but i killed the deer but never knew what pin i used. After that i went to a 1 pin movable sight and never looked back.

I picked 3 pins. I have a 5 pin sight, but I only use the top three pins.
|
RE: How many pins do you prefer??
I like one.
|
RE: How many pins do you prefer??
three pins, 20 30 40, works great for me, provides a lot of security and makes the in-between shots much easier.
|
RE: How many pins do you prefer??
2 pins here. 25-35. It was a three pin site, but I removed the third pin since I wasn't using it.
|
RE: How many pins do you prefer??
the last couple years I have been using a 1 pin adjustable slider site. They are tops to me. So simple to use.

RE: How many pins do you prefer??
One pin adjustable. I have marks for 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 for when I shoot 3D, but I keep it at 25 thru the hunting season.

RE: How many pins do you prefer??
I just added a 5th pin to my Viper. I'm no sharpshooter....but I've read that 75% of your practice time should be spent shooting 2 times the distance you think you'll be shooting in the field.
So....I figure my max effective range (in a great situation) is 30 yds on a live animal. That means I need to practce from 60yds (It's 62 yds from the corner of my patio to the corner of my lot....where I have stakes for my 3D buck. I just like hunting with the same sight I use for practice/3D. |
RE: How many pins do you prefer??
I change it every year. I do not like more than 4 pins, gets confusing beyond that. Last year I had standard 20, 30, 40, 50. Depending on how fast the bow I am shooting this year is, I will probably do the same. Maybe I will only do 20,30,40.........we will see.
|
RE: How many pins do you prefer??
I am at a five pin sight. would never need those pin when hunting in the woods, but it always funshooting target when there is some distance between you and the target.
|
RE: How many pins do you prefer??
Two pins here, 20 and 40. I'm thinking about going to just one. I have yet touse the 40 yard pin for hunting conditions.
|
RE: How many pins do you prefer??
I have 6 pins, but the bottom pins are there for 3d. For hunting only the top 3 will be needed.
I also like to practice at longer ranges so having a pin for it makes it easier. |
RE: How many pins do you prefer??
1 pin slider with it marked for upto 70 yards.
|
RE: How many pins do you prefer??
1 slider pin is good enough for me. I set it at 25 and have an additional mark at 35.
|
RE: How many pins do you prefer??
Out ofthree pins on my bow, I use one for hunting and the other two for 3D.
My top pin is good zero to thirty yards. I get a little crazy with my bottom two pins on the 3D target lanes and use them to shootanywhere from 50 to 70 yards. Sometimes I even come close to the bulls-eye! |
RE: How many pins do you prefer??
I have used 5 and 6 pin sights, and currently have them on a Bow. I did rig my Allegiance with a Quick Click Ranger that I like to use out west in conjunction with a range finder. It eliminates splitting pins on those 33, 46, etc. yard shots. They all will work it just depends on what you like and what you become familar with. That's the Key shoot enough with your hunting setup that everything about it becomes second nature;)

One, I like to keep it simple.;)

RE: How many pins do you prefer??
I use three pins, pin #1 is zero to thirty, #2 is 40 and #3 is 50 yards. I have a six pin sight I use for 3-d and I have it dialed in out to 70yards, but really dont plan on flinging one at a deer that far away.

RE: How many pins do you prefer??
Like Rick James, I mix it up. I have shot one pin all season. I have shot three. I have shot five for the last two years. This year, I'll shoot seven, because I am practicing out so much farther than I ever have (95 yards). My pins are set at 25,35,45,55,65,75,and 85. Will I take a shot at a deer over 40 in a hunting situation. NO. I might not even take one at 30 if I don't feel good about it. The longest shot I have taken on a deer was at 38 yards. I drilled her and she went down inside 35 yards. I don't want to shoot outside that range on a hunt, but I like knowing and practing through the season. I often shoot on my way out of the woods and take a practice shot from the treeat long distances before I get down, just topractice.
I have never made the mistake of using the wrong pin.( Not that I am arrogant enough to say that it won't happen We'll see how 7 pins works this year. |

I've always used three for my Midwest whitetail hunting: 20, 30 and 40... Green for 20 (you've got the green light; let 'er rip!!) Yellow for 30 (Are you sure you're not gonna get a better shot? If not, go for it!) and red for 40 (Stop! Let's weigh your options here... Be sure of everything...)
I've added a fourth for 50 this summer in preparation for my upcoming elk hunt in Colorado... went with green since it was the furthest color away. |

RE: How many pins do you prefer??
I've been known to have a couple good ideas every now and then... ;)

RE: How many pins do you prefer??
I use a 4 pin sight. 30, 40, 50, 60. The 50 and 60 is mainly for practice, I would never take a shot at an animal that far. I guess the other reason I have the longer distance if god forbid i would make a bad shot on an animal and would need a long distance follow up shot. But even then I would weigh the options before making a choice about the shot. It happened to me a couple years ago I shot a doe and for some reason still unknown to me I hit her way way back in the hind quarter. When i seen the arrow go I thought "Oh SH*T!" She only ran about 20 yards and laid down. I stayed in my stand and watched her for 4 hours. She got up and moved only a few yards, and then laid back down. The longer she layed there the better she looked. So I had a hard choice to make. 1 sneak out and come back in a few more hours, which was my first thought. But i thought if she suddenly gets a burst of energy and gets up and moves a hundred yards with no blood trail I might not find her. 2 sneak up and try a follow up shot. I ended up sneaking with in 25 yards of her and made a perfect double lung and she died in her bed. I got very very lucky on that deal. You just never know when you might need that extra shot for a clean kill.

i use 1 pin and like it alot.

RE: How many pins do you prefer??
flyfish, one other thought on why I use that color combo in that order... not only what I wrote above, but that's also the reverse order the pins start to "wink out" on me... I lose visibility of red first in low light, then yellow and finally green. As it gets darker and darker in the woods, my pins go out as my effective range decreases... leaving me with my brightest pinat the smallest distance I can see at the end of my hunt. It's a perfect marriage.

It's a perfect marriage. Then I thought about some more.....That makes pretty good sense. As it gets dark, your effective range dissipates anyway due to limited light, and heck, you don't need that pin anymore anyway.......It's the minute, teeny weeny details we just wouldn't think about that sometimes burn us......How aggravating would that be to wait all year for a shot at a bruiser only to finally get it on the last day of season and not be able to see your 20 yard pin.....But by golly there's my 40 glowing bright...... Of course, I shoot a single pin slider that's green......;):D |
RE: How many pins do you prefer??
I've 3 pins. 15, 20,30 meters. I've shooting with a old bow (like you've seen in my past topic) with aluminium arrows, so the drop is really impressive. beetween 30 ans 40 meters, i'm shooting 12" higher to touch the same place as my 30 m pin.
