Who lets kids skip school to hunt?
#11
My parents would let me as long as my grades were good and I stayed on top of my chores.
Although school is very important, hunting taught me life lessonsthat I could never learn in school.

My old man lets me take off school anytime i want but only if i have, good grades, no tickets and if it is for somthing useful. Today, igive him major respect for letting me do this and are gunna continue to pass this on when i have kids.

when i was in 6th grade i turned 12. my school attendance dropped dramatically. i honestly missed 20+ days a year to hunt and fish. turkey season id miss 2 days a week every week just because dad was off and could hunt with me. and we also always took a whole week vacation every spring to turkey hunt and trout fish.
how did i possibly manage to graduate with honors and a 3.3gpa??? easy. hunting was my motivation. i knew if i did good i got to hunt. if i did bad i wasnt allowed to miss school to hunt. i'm a lucky person. school stuff generally comes pretty easy..atleast highschool stuff did. i worked 2 jobs working 60hr weeks most my senior year. may i turkey hunted dang near every day before school. slept in school so i could stay up at work lol. still did good and never cracked a book at home.
the week long trips id tell all my teachers i was going away and they would give me the work and every night after dinner i did homework till bed time...
hunting was and still is my motivation to do well in school(now college) now i know if i dont do my papers and studying that i will HAVE to do it sooner or later, which will potentially kill my hunting time. so i still use hunting to get my school work done. i got a 4.0 this spring semester...i spent a good number of days hunting and fishing.
to me, id have to say my system works....i'd have to say i turned out pretty good....

I used to miss the first day of buck season every year during junior and senior high. I even got paddled one year in 10th grade for not bringing in an excuse. It was a few years after that, that schools here in Pa considerer it a holiday almost. If I'm not mistaken alot of schools are closed that day now.

I always got to skip school on opening day(Friday in IL) so if my daughter wanted to I would allow it. However she really has no interest in hunting. She sat on a bow stand with me a couple of times a few years ago. Decided then that hunting was too boring for her, too much sitting still. She does like to fish tho so maybe there is hope yet. I have more patience now than when I was 17 too.

My last 2 years of high school I probably missed 12-15 days of school each year. Was actually sick maybe 3 total, missed a few more for funerals, the rest I was hunting or fishing. I was a big geek in high school so grade issues were never an issue.
