How many already know...
Which stand you will be in opening morning/evening? I know where I will be the first evening. In a White Oak bottom right next to a bedding area. Don't really know about the first morning yet. May be close to the same spot or the other side of said bedding area.

RE: How many already know...
An oak tree in a grove that sticks out into a pasture. This belt of trees is about 100yds long and 30 yds wide. It is a travel corridor and feeding area. I have killed 3 of my 4 bow deer from that spot. The tree is ready for my climber and I'm ready too!

RE: How many already know...
I don't think I'll be hunting out af any stands this year. Hell, I don't think I'm even going to hunt whitetail at all this year.

RE: How many already know...
Yea Dan, why wouldn't you be hunting whitetails this season? Work?[&o]
|
RE: How many already know...
I know where ill be hunting the first evening. I will be hunting where i killed my 150" buck this year on the third day of the season. I imagine the bucks will be doing the same thing this year that they always do and that stand is a GREAT spot to catch a bachelor group crusing through...

RE: How many already know...
I was wondering the same thing! Why NOT? Are you just going to spot and stalk Muley or Blacktail? I can't image EVER not hunting whitetail! :(
|
RE: How many already know...
Morning: Oak tree on a huge cross road trail halfway between soy bean field, bedding area and water. (saw over a dozen deer last year...which was out of range by 60yds)
Evening: Edge of the soy bean field, top of the ridge, nearest the water hole. I knew I was going to sit these stands even before last year was over with. |

RE: How many already know...
If I didn't hunt whitetail, I wouldn't hunt!!! C'mon Danny boy whats wrong with you?
|
RE: How many already know...
I will be hunting the inside edge of a food plot openning day, if the wind is right for it. Im also planning on sitting the whole day. My best archery whitetail was taken on openning day 02", so the opener is always circled on the calender.

RE: How many already know...
Why all the drama Wash? You got a new girlfriend squeezin on ya?:D
|
RE: How many already know...
Oh I'll be hunting this year, guys, just not for whitetail.
I've been bitten by the Mulie bug and I'm damned determined to find one and kill it. I'm planning on doing quite a bit of backpack hunting this September for Mulies and Elk and hopefully I'll have tagged out and won't be able to hunt Whitetails this year. ;) Gotcha. |
RE: How many already know...
If I knew what the weather was going to be and which direction the wind was going to blow I could tell you.
I know it will be somewhere in Canada! [8D]:) |

Just kidding Wash, I'd probably chase a Mulie myself if they were around here.

RE: How many already know...
I changed food plot locations so I am going to haveto get trail cam pics of the area before I hang a stand. I will have to see which way they are coming from and bedding at.

ORIGINAL: LouisianaTomkat Forget the wind DAN, Just hunt. That's a whole different thread.......speaking of that, where's HCH been?;) |
RE: How many already know...
I guess I'm just used to hunting whitetails. I couldn't even get into hunting turkeys that much this year. It's what I've grown up doing, I just can't get into it for some reason. I could probably hunt Mulies, Elk and other sized game like that, but I doubt I'll even buy turkey tags next year.

RE: How many already know...
Only 129 days and counting here. Just can't wait.
Dan, I guess HCH is working on the filming business he and Hoytgirl were working on this past season. Or he might have broke his other foot.[:-] |
RE: How many already know...
As far as stands go, I KNOW the tree ill be in :D

RE: How many already know...
I've benn hunting elk in the same place for ten years now. This year we are going to try something different. We always go for elk, first rifle season, and deer hunt late rifle season. This year we are going to be huntingrifle deer andrifle elk, same season(second season)in a new area by Meeker, Colorado, at the same time. We won't be using stands and we are going to scout it a couple of times this summer.
I know the propety that I will be hunting my bow doe but have not seen it. It is only 44 acres, but I will be the only one to hunt this year. In fact no one has hunted it for years. I'm kinda stoked. I will be bow hunting my bull elk with a very good friend that has been hunting elk for years with both bow and rifle. We are going to be somewhere around Meeker, Colorado. We are going up this summerto scout and let me see the area. I'm trusting him because I do not know the area at all. Same friend is going to take me bow antelope hunting this year also, and all I know is its in eastern Colorado. Gonna be different, but I'm so excited just typing this, I probably won't be able to sleep tonight! I hope everything is cool with Washington Hunter and he is just kidding. If something is wrong, I know he will get a lot of support here! Keep your chin up WA!:D I guess WA is Okay! Ya got me for sure![:@] |
RE: How many already know...
I'm glad some of you already know which oak tree you'll be sitting on. BUT... you don't even know if we'll have an accorn crop yet. Heck, we just got leaves last week. I guess what I'm saying is some of you are putting a lot on the line for an unknown at this point, There is no way you can know for sure where to sit next fall at this time of year. If you're simply relying on it's been good before you're making a big mistake. Maybe not this year .... or next... but that kind of stinkin' thinkin' is a blue print for failure. At this time of year just watch 'em grow and enjoy the scenery. Pick a stand in a few months.

RE: How many already know...
Cougars09, I guess you will have to change your avatar.
Right now, I have two stands in my sights, one on multiple lanes in 10 year old cutover, and the other a small "staging area" clearing about 150 yards inside of woods next to huge clover plot. But like davidmil said, may change depending on additional scouting and observation. I just want an opening day doe with my bow (missed one last year), so it shouldn't be too hard to find them at that time, just will need to find a spot where I can get close. |
RE: How many already know...
Mr. David, I have had Spring green up for 3 months here. You can bet I know what kinda acorn crop we are gonna have already. White oaks will be good and the red oaks/pin/post oaks will be fair to moderate. Regardless of the acorn crop though, I know where my deer bed and travel due to my land being private and all land surrounding being nothing but a pressure cooker.
LT We shall see I guess. |
RE: How many already know...
LT,
That is good news about white oaks. I mostly hunt Northern St. Landry Parish near Assumption, and just got access to 8 additional acres with about 20 white oaks. Heard last year's mast crop was not that good, when the acorns are dropping I hope to be perched and ready. Where you at? |
RE: How many already know...
In my ladder stand over looking nothing but corn and clover.
|
RE: How many already know...
yeah i know where i'll be
|
RE: How many already know...
I have no idea! Just depends on what the pre-season scouting tells me.
|
RE: How many already know...
I know exactly the tree I'll be in for opening morning. I hunted that tree twice, last year......and that location on 3 mornings. To be honest.....it was late in the year when I hunted it.....and I really just want to see what it's like on that tract in the mornings.....during the early season.
I'm betting I see some deer, too.....;) REGARDLESS of where the deer go to eat (which crop fields)......they're gonna come "home" pretty much the same way. Iset upclose to "home".......and I'll get in there EARLY (4-4:30am). I'm already looking forward to a little nap that morning.....and watching and HEARING the woods come alive, again. I'm guessing second Saturday in Sept.........;):) |
RE: How many already know...
I have no idea where I will be sitting opening morning. Too many variables.
I do know, however, the tree I will be in November 4. Tradition. No matter what the sign tells me I always hunt the same stand on that day. Stupid... maybe, but I enjoy it so who cares? |
RE: How many already know...
What Stand?? I dunno even know what Location...?? No, I'm nowhere close to knowing anything yet!
|
RE: How many already know...
Right next to Atlas;)
|
RE: How many already know...
In NJ I have an idea, but it will be determined by the wind as to which actual stand I am in. No way to know that until the night before.
In PA I may have a dilemma. My 15 year high school reunion is on the evening of the opener so I'll have to be in the Pittsburgh area at that time. I may stop in to my rifle camp if its open and hunt a saddle on a ridge leading to a bedding area. If it's not, I may have to wing it and hit one of my old haunts and hope the deer still move like they used to. |
RE: How many already know...
I will be hunting in an open ridge next to a very large bedding area. I think the deer are feeding on acorns during the day and the food plots at night.
|
RE: How many already know...
I don't know the exact tree yet but me, my dad and my bro's always go tothe same area every year on opening day so I've got a pretty good idea.:D
|
RE: How many already know...
I'll know by mid August
