What's the dumbest thing you ever did?

This doesn't have to pertain to hunting, just outdoors happenings. My wife will tell you that the stupidest thing she saw me do was last year when I was cutting some brush out of the edge of the yard. It was right before dark and I had my chainsaw going when I felt something bite me. I turned my saw off to see what it was. That's when I noticed that I was being swarmed by yellow jackets. I ran to the house as fast as I could with bees all over me. My wife met me at the door and shoved me back in the garage and said " You aren't coming into this house with all those bees on you" I was being stung over and over again. So she says take your clothes off and I'll let you in. I did. I got inside and she swatted the last few bees that were in my hair and on my back.. Now I was pretty mad. I had been stung somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 -60 times. I thought I would pull a fast one on those bees and went back out there after dark with some gas. I found there hole in the ground and torched it. Done deal I thought. I went to work the next day and when I got home I thought I would check and see if there were any bees left. I didn't see and flying around and I kind of had to pee, so I whipped "tiny" out and peed into the hole to express my distaste for those stupid bees. Wouldn't you know it there was one stinkin bee left in that darn hole. He flew out in a straight line and stung me right on my "other head" if you know what I mean. That REALLY hurt! My wife can't tell this stroy without laughing herself to tears.

Have you ever tried to scratch your back with an arrow? Don't do it if there is a broadhead on it. I didn't realize at first that I sliced myself. My wife asked me why I was bleeding. Nothing requiring stitches thank goodness. Dumber than a bag of hammers! BTW, ruined a perfectly good work shirt.

RE: What's the dumbest thing you ever did?

A few years ago I was hunting in mid December in Illinois on a private farm. I was stalking an area where does usually bedded on one side of heavily wooded pond that stretched about 150 yards in length and about 50 yards in width.

It took about an hour for me, on a slow stalk,to get to a good vantage point where I saw that their were no deer in the usual beds. I decided to try and creep up to another bedding areaabout another 1/2 a mile away. But I knew If I could cross the pondI could save myself a good half hour at least.

So here I am (being stupid) lying face down on about 2 inches of ice crossing a 50 yard distance trying to reach the other side.I was lying face down to spread my weight (FYI). Half way across I slid my bow to the other side when suddenly the ice made a loud crack and actually felt the entire pond shift! Now I am fully dressedin overalls, boots, winter jacket etc.!! If I go under I don't know that I could lift myself up...(yeah, this was a dumb idea!)

Eventually I made it to the other side.. took a huge sigh of relief.. and never told my girlfriend about the incident.

Left my dodge in neutral, purley by accident right after starting it one morning before work. Looked out in the dark aftegoing back into the house....and saw lights going down our steep driveway ...fast... I said to my wife "there goes Danny" (our 1 neighbor) then I remembered Dan doesnt have clearance lights on his ford... OUCH... my pickup rolled down through our field and into the creek bottom....... By the grace of God it rolled perfectly into a huge patch of brush which broke the momentum and stopped it without to much damage..ended up replacing the bumper..

Was fishing a bass tournament and after weigh in I had a bright idea and told my buddy to go to another boat ramp that was on the other side of the lake. There were about afifty boats in the tournament and thoughtI would be slick and beat the rush. It was dark but I thought it would be no problem getting to the other side. Well on the trek over I ran aground and had to get out of the boat and push it for what seemed like eternity. I finally got there about 2 hrs later to a pissed off friend and ashrunken sac.

I got in the same typedeal while setting traps for muskrats quite a few years back in a large slough. It was 2 in the morning and I just had a couple houses and a little breather push up moundto set. I punch a hole into the little push up mound.Shined my flash light in to see if there was a place to set a trap. I noticed little bits ofdebris moving downin the water... at a fast pace!! [&:]It then dawn on me,I was over the old coulee bed and it would be deep and the ice pretty thin.

I had been doing an ice check with my hatchetevery so often as it was early in the winterand figured maybe it was time for another check. Hatchet went though on the first chop. [:@] I assumed the position, slid my5 gal bucket with traps/gear behind me as far as I could, and snow angeled my way out of there!!

The next day I went back to check traps. There was open water about15 feet from where Istopped. The batteries on the flash light were getting weak so I only used it while checking inside the huts and feeder pushup... not while walking. There was just enough moon light that the houses andpush up showed up. The open water didn't.

I was stupid for not quitting when the batteries started going.

I bought a jetski when I got out of college. I lived in Greenville, NC.....and would put in at the Tar River sometimes REALLY early in the morning.......before work.....and start my day off with a refreshing run.

One morning.....I was back at the ramp.....and I put my flag on the trailer so that I could see to back it with my S-10 pickup. I was picking up the flag as I backed up and BAM!! I creased the %$^# out of my door when it caught on a piling. I'd left my door open to back up.

Moved in with or dated a woman who didn't like my friends or who my friends told me to break away from. They were always right.

Come to thing of it, so is my lovely wife of six years. And she thinks my friends are great for me to have, though she gets a little fed up with all the hunting and fishing talk we seem to do when we get together.

RE: What's the dumbest thing you ever did?

The night before the opener in Illinois a friend wanted some help hanging two stands so WKP/Todd and I said we would help. Well I had my saftey belt and everything else packed for the morning hunt, so I went up with out my saftey belt. Not what your thinking, now i'm afraid of heights so while up in the stand I had two branchs to trim and I would be done. I cut the first one on the side of the tree and left about 4 inchs so you could hang a backpack or something on it and I could hang onto it while I cut the other branch that was right over the standat a 45 degree angle to the first one. Well while I was cutting the big branch in front of me the thought came through mymind that I don't want to cut it all the way through and hit my other hand that I was hanging on with. Well you guessed it about that same time the branch falls and blood starts to spray every where, amazing what agood Greber saw will do to the back of a hand. 2 pints of blood and 35 stichs and aplastic surgen to put the tendons back togather I missed opening morning. Lucky for me WKP/Todd is a design engineer and made me a speical brace so I could hunt that night with my bow lowered to 60# and only 1 pin set for 20 yards.. Now that was dumb!!!! Walt

Back in my earlier years of bowhunting, I tried taking a broadhead off of my arrow, with just my fingers. I can still see the scar on my finger after 10-12 years.Doesn't take much for the broadhead to slip and make a deep cut. Moral of the story... Always use a Broadhead wrench!!!

a couple of buddies of mine along with me were cleaning up some woods and had gathered a pile of branches and whatever else was laying around. well it had been wet for awhile so when we went to start the fire it wouldnt start without some persuading. we got a 5 gal. can of gas and figured if this wouldnt do it, nothing would. we fianlly got it started on 1 side of the pile and couldnt seem to get it started anywhere else. so being the geniouses we are, we had one person trying to light the gas and one person pouring the gas on the pile. sure enough it didnt take long and all of a sudden the whole thing went up in flames. it almost got one of my friends (the one trying to light it) pretty good. me and the other guy that were pouring gas on it just jumped back and we seemed fine. then i look down at the gas can and there was flames coming out of the nozzle. i then proceded to put my hand over it (yes i had gloves on) thinking that it would suffocate it. well it didnt work so when i realized this, i yelled RUN!!!!! oh man that was so funny looking back on it but at the time all of us could have been really hurt in that accident.

RE: What's the dumbest thing you ever did?

Many to mention..but one recent one still makes me shiver...

Two summers ago my brother and I had one of them "goat roping" adventures we'd rather forget...All because we were in a hurry to get in the hills.
First dumb thing was getting a flat tire and not blocking the other 3 wheels while changing it. Didn't notice it until a passer by stopped to help, and noticed it himself. This was WAY out of normal for me, and something I kicked myself for to this day. Thank GOD we were on level ground and the truck didn't roll on one of us.
Second dumn thing was getting to our destination and realizing we left 1/2 of our gear sitting in front of the garage, including matches, most of our food, tent, and my warm jacket. We made a makeshift shelter out of a tarp, got a fire going with an emergency magnesium fire kit I had on my keychain, and we ended up catching a couple fish to eat. Luckily we had good sleeping bags.
Third dumb thing was continuing the goat roping by letting my brother insist his truck could make it over the few remaining snow drifts to get back into the high mountain lake of our final destination. We did fine getting in (the drifts were solid from the night cold),but got stuck BAD on theway out (imagine that...the sunshine softened the drifts). Once again luck provided a very helpful couple on 4-wheelers that gave us a ride back to a phone. A couple hours later my wife showed up in the truck and took our sorry butts home. Two weeks later my brother was able to get his truck out after the snow finally subsided.

Oh, one other stupid thing....NEVER TRY TO START A BBQ WITH COLMAN CAMP FUEL SUBSTITUTING FOR LIGHTER FLUID!!!!...my arm hair has finally grown back. Fortunately I was "smart" enough to light it with and outstretched arm and a stick. WOOOSH!!!

*Machete wound on right shin...
*More "Trust me guys, I know what I'm doing" than should ever be allowed
*Fish hooks/lures in several different fingers
*Have had the brush fire crew at the scout cabin on multiple occasions because they thought e had a REALLY big fire (they just don't see the beauty ina bonfire that you can see from outerspace!)
*Takin a couple non-voluntary swims in different lakes to retrieve poles, nets, etc.
*Many more stupid stories to share...

RE: What's the dumbest thing you ever did?

Well for me it was one day when me and my bro were wade fishing the Elk River around my house. We were on the opposite side of the river from where my truck was parked and the river had risen a little since we had started. Well we get the bright idea to swim acrossed the river instead of walking to the shoals and crossing. So I take of with my fishing pole in one hand, swimming with the free hand with wading boots on. I make it about half way acrossed and decide to see if the water was shallow enough to walk because I was tiring fast. I go under the water to find the bottom and of course I can't touch and by the grace of God was able to gethead back above the surface butby then thepanic was setting in. Well when I calmed down enough to think I dropped my new fishing rod and rolled over to my back and swam the rest of the way acrossedthe river. When we got out of the water my brother asked if I was going back after the pole and I told him God had got me out of that river and I wasn't in no hurry to test his patience.:D

so many to think of two quick ones. Last year was fishing got my repala stuck on a dock rather then going over to it and getting it off I yank it. My buddy who was at an angle in front of me to get hit ducks at the last second not giving me time to react and I get a treable hook in my lip so deep I went to the er to get it removed. Pretty funny to see a 5 inch repala hanging from a lip. Then just saturday was out carp shooting and I was around this pond and in the center was a sandbar that was about a foot out of the water and dried and cracking surface. Around it is knee deep water I walk through the water and the ground isnt sinking so I think cool and let my gaurd down stepped up onto the sandbar only for it to be mud like quicksand go up to the top of my hips and instantly. start scrambleing for shore/swimming make it fine but sure did freak me out I dont know if I ever did hit the bottom I dont think I did and worst part was I was alone so it could of been bad.

Lots of dumb stuff in general, but for hunting, on opening day of rifle season I didn't realize until I was in my stand that I forgot to put my bullets in my pack. That was pretty frustrating (this was back when I only gun hunted). Since I was dropped off, I had to walk back to the truck, and it was of course locked. [:@]

I'm pretty absent minded, so now I have like a 12 step routine before I leave the truck.:D

In 48 years , I have done a few dumb things. :)

One that sticks in my mind happened when I was 17. My BIL and I were going to shoot one afternoon, and I decided that I was going to take a large mound where some RR tracks had been at about 60MPH on a gravel road. My 1966VW Beetle made it ok (airborne) but when we got on the other side I slid back and forth and ended up stratling a ditch with my bumper in a pine tree. A farmer came along and helped us out. When my stepfather found out, I lost the car for a month. I deserved it.

Last winter my friend was in a real depressed mood becouse his girlfriend broke up with him. So i took him rabbit hunting at the local wildlife area. Well were trucking through the woods and feilds and we come upon this huge swamp. He decides he doesnt care what happans and starts walking acrossed it (its all frozen over) I cant just let my frined walk off alone into a huge ice covered swamp just as its getting dark, so i follow him. Well all the ice starts breaking and we fall through a couple times and its only knee to waist deep. None the less i was amazingly scared becousei knew all the water wasnt only waist deep. Anyways, we finally walked acrossed it and followed some railroad tracks back to the parking lot. When we got back, we had a great idea to shoot at the ice in the lake, just to see how deep it is. Well we shoot it probably about 10-15 times, find out its about 10 inches thickand decide to go home. A couple days later, the local game warden calls me and my friend saying that he is going to charge us with discharging a firearm after dark, littering (for not picking up our used shells) and hunting after dark. He says that i could lose my licence and be banned from the wildlife area. Me and my friend get real scared and talk things through with the warden. I found out that the warden is friends with my dad (my dad built his house) and he only gave us a warning, but told us never to do it again or were in big trouble.

Bottom line is: Don't let teenage stupidity and peer pressure get the better of you.

I do it all the time in the fall when I am hunting from the ground with a rifle. But then again, I can get them to drop where they stand and I set up right on the edge of a path. Its all about comfort...and right now...I am rather uncomfortable....DOH!
