Rocket Bunker Busters...Is it just me...
![]() Or does this design look like is would inhibit good penetration? I'm no engineer or physicist, but this design does not look like it would penetrate well to me. First, it's got a big fat ferrule that has to push through tissue. It's a low profile broadhead with steep angled blades which require more energy. It's got a step in the ferrule that tissue can get caught on. Finally, it's got that knurled sleeve that will create friction. I could be completely wrong and these could be the best thing since sliced bread, but on first impression I don't think they would do well. Any thoughts? 5shot? |
RE: Rocket Bunker Busters...Is it just me...
Yeah, I could see where it could get slowed down in a hurry. I don't think I'd use them just on looks.

RE: Rocket Bunker Busters...Is it just me...
I agree
Kind of looks like Flash Gordons rocket ship[&:] |
RE: Rocket Bunker Busters...Is it just me...
i don't like the way they look

I don't have any questions in my mind that this would still blow through a deer with MY set-up......but I STILL don't like the looks of it.

RE: Rocket Bunker Busters...Is it just me...
You know, they may be great for turkeys where you're looking for that extra 'wallop' in addition to the cut... I've heard of people placing washers behind their broadheads; here, it looks like they've done it for you! ;)

RE: Rocket Bunker Busters...Is it just me...
I see that the knurled piece actually slips down over the tip of the arrow, concealing the tip of the insert up inside.
What the heck is the purpose of that? Maybe the same principle as the old Beman external inserts - adding a little more structural integrity to the tip of the arrow? Yeah, I'd agree - look for the Rocket Bunker Buster to come to a clearance aisle near you. Nobody is gonna buy those things... Then again, Matthews has been selling the same bowin different camo patterns and withdifferent (prettier)limbs/risersfor 10 years straight, raising the price every year, and there are still people lined up to get them. Bowhunters can be strange ducks, and if they market it right, anything is possible. |

I think the knurled piece is supposed to help ensure proper alignment to eliminate any wobble. To me, just us an arrow squaring tool and make sure you've got your inserts seated right and you've done the same thing. I don't see a bright future for these. I think the Bunker Busters may be a bust. Germ, Flash AHHHHHH! |

RE: Rocket Bunker Busters...Is it just me...
Greg - I'm allowed to say that - I've been hunting withthe sameone-cam bow for8 years now. I think I bought it in '99, and it's still faster than most of the '07 single-cams. Obviously, I never saw much need to "upgrade" to a new one, b/c they weren't any different than the one I already had. Same cam, different paint job and some rubber doo-dads stuck on it. If I wanted new paint that bad, I'd have just sprung for a can of Krylon.
Not saying they're bad bows at all. Just 10 year old technology. I'd still be hunting with mine this fall if I didn't beat the thing to death. |
RE: Rocket Bunker Busters...Is it just me...
Quick, I understood exactly what you're saying... Heck, I had a '99 Mathews MQ-1 for firve or six years for that very reason... every time they released a new bow, I'd go shoot it. I always came home with my MQ-1...
I still don't know if they've ever really improved on that bow -- and I evenowned a Switchback XT after I became a store shooter just so that I'd be shooting with the "latest, greatest" and hopefully influence some sales for the owner... |
RE: Rocket Bunker Busters...Is it just me...
Re-reading that post, I don't mean to insinuate Mathews doesn't make great bows; on the contrary, they certainly do. But I also know that I'm not alone in my thinking that the MQ-1 may have been their best ever. ;)

I know what ya mean... I think I took over 20 with mine before finally retiring her --including my biggest to date.
If you look real closely, you'll see her lying between this brute's legs... ![]() OK... have we sufficiently hijacked this thread enough? LOL Bottom line... these new broadheads suck in our collective opinions... [8D]Just kidding! :D |
RE: Rocket Bunker Busters...Is it just me...
I beg to differ. Check out the review at : http://btreviews.proboards57.com/index.cgi#general
One of the best broadhead designs he's ever tested. I am presently deciding between Slick Tricks and Silver Flames....both of which work fantastic from my set up, but I plan on giving these a fair try as well.;) |
RE: Rocket Bunker Busters...Is it just me...
Interesting test that guy conducts. I've always thought using parts from a deer would yield the best test. The Bunker Busters definitely bust through bone, but the test doesn't yield a true penetration test. I'd like to see how far it penetrated ballistics gelatin compare to other broadheads.

I see your point, although the first criticism that folks using gelatin receive is, "yeah, but how does it work on a real animal?". The testing BT uses is very thorough....you have to have a heck of a broadhead to get a passing score. Spitfires consistently score the best in mechanical category. Slick Tricks, Bunker Busters, Turbos (now the Blitz) and Silver Flames are some of the best in the fixed replacement blade category. I always anxiously await his new tests. Best to ya....;) |
RE: Rocket Bunker Busters...Is it just me...
I have not used these exact heads, but I have used ones similar. I think they are the Ultimate Steel heads or something like that. Any way they are a short head with small triangular blades, just no holes. They penetrate EXCELLENT! I have a low poundage set up with a short draw length and they work great. Not to mention they fly very well because of the low profile.
These actually look like a better design than what I used. As far as the knurled part, it is not bigger than the shaft of the head so it should not make any difference. It will slip through the hole the head and blades make. I would say it's there to give you a way to screw on the heads without using a broad head wrench or gripping the blades which is not to safe. I sort of like the idea myself. I might check these out. I have had good luck with the Nail Driver mechanicals as well, but I don't think they make them any more. Rocket heads or known for having good penetration and being well built heads. Paul |
RE: Rocket Bunker Busters...Is it just me...
I agree Paul. I love the Ultimate steels, they have 0 penetration problems and are super accurate. Just based on my expeiences with Rocket Broadheads mainly the Ultimate Steel 100's and Steel Head 100's, they are very durable, sharp, and accurate. This one immediately reminded me of the Ultimate Steel andI will probably try some out just because of the results I've had in the past withRocket.
