Piebald Buck
I was asked to put this in the bowhunting forums from another bowhunter that was in the contest this past year. Sorry for the delay, I have been really busy with school and work and havent really had much extra time. Anyways.....heres the story...
He came out about 20 yards and was looking at me, so I rushed my shot, and i heard it crack, but where i shot there were some branches in the way, so i didnt know if I had hit him or not. After I shot he ran about 50 yards up the field and stood there for a few minutes, I called with the grunt and doe estrus call and he didnt respond at all. Then he went in the woods and presented me with a 40 yard shot and just as I was about to pull back again, he stumbled a bit, so I thought that I may have hit him and decided not to take the shot. Left him lay for 30 minutes and my uncle came over to help track him. My arrow was solid blood, but there wasnt much of a blood trail. We walked up to were he stopped in the field and my uncle said "where did you say he stumbled" and i showed him, and he says there he is and we both took a step. Just as we took a step the buck jumps up, appearing to be pretty strong and takes off in the thicket:(. After that I thought that my shot placement wasnt so good. So we let him lay for another hour and a half, come back to follow the blood and he ran another 60 yards and fell over while he was running. I know he isnt the big buck I was after this year, but this is a buck of a lifetime, and there is no way I would trade this deer for one of the other bigger bucks on our farm. The shot ended up going hitting the liver and exited out the gut, like I said I rushed my shot, but hes dead anyway. Oh yeah, I was reading that less than one percent of whitetail in the wild are piebald, well I got that less than one percent:D. ![]() |

RE: Piebald Buck
Beautiful Buck! Glad you were able to recover him.
Welcome to the forum! |
RE: Piebald Buck
AWESOME... simply AWESOME!!!!
You're right; I would have passed up many a shot at a bigger buck to get that one!! There's only one problem if I'd have shot it... it would have cost me a LOT of money, because I would have certainly got a full body mount on that guy! |

RE: Piebald Buck
So, what kind of mount are you having done on it?
|
RE: Piebald Buck
What a great buck. Hopefully he passed some of his genetics on so you might be able to get a crack at a second one.

RE: Piebald Buck
That's a great buck....on being unique, alone. That photo, if I'm not mistaken, was on the contest page, last season.
Congrats to tyour friend. |
RE: Piebald Buck
Beautiful my friend. Absolutely beautiful.

RE: Piebald Buck
Beautiful buck, I'd at least get a shoulder mount on that one. They are rare, especially a buck. I've gotten two different piebald doe on my trail cam and was lucky enough to kill one. I got the fur tanned.

RE: Piebald Buck
Congrats to your friend. That is truly a rare trophy. I think that would have to be a full body mount for me as well. Great story too, very honest and open about the facts.

I hope your doing a full mount. It's expensive but looks great anywhere in the house. I have my eye on another one this year.

congrats to your friend |
RE: Piebald Buck
Very cool looking buck!
Definitely worthy ofa full body mount. Congrats! |

Rare indeed, congrats to him.

RE: Piebald Buck
That is a cool deer, but I can't believe no one jumped all over him. I mean I read the story and he shot through a thicket so he couldn't tell if he hit him or not. Then he has a 40 yard shot and was going to take it, but the buck stumbled so he didn't? If I ever get a follow up shoton an animal I'll take it. I'm not the best hunter or anything, but this story just bothered me. Maybe I'm just jealous.
Tell your friend congratz on the buck though. |
RE: Piebald Buck

RE: Piebald Buck
LOL, omg, I didnt check this in like 2 days and there are a lot of posts. Ummmm...as for the mount of the deer Im getting it full body. I know Ive been criticized for not taking another shot, but there was one reason I didnt, that same season my uncle hit one and took another shot at it and it had like an adrenaline rush, we followed the blood which was really assuring that he had a really good shot, but eventually led to nothing. IDK, but I just thought that if I left him go he would lay down or something, maybe not the best idea, but its what i did at the time lol. And to Mauser06, you probably did see this deer already. I shot it last season for the archery contest. And I ended up catching some lung and liver not the "best" shot but hey it did the job.
And to my first post about this, I shot this buck, another bowhunter from another team from the contest had suggested to me to put the story and photo on here. Sorry, I might have worded it wrong or something. Thanks everyone |
RE: Piebald Buck
I just want to see the full mount. Like I said, I have my eye on another one. I may hunt him this fall if I can spend the money on a full mount.
