I am thinking its going to have to be guided, i have never had the opportunity to hunt out west so backpacking in and camping out for a week or more is something i would want someone to show me the ropes before i went out on my own. I looked online a bit and saw like some of you have mentioned that you can hunt both at the same time in certain parts of the country ( i was looking at montana). Guess i got to make some decisions and start the wheels in motion. Thanks for your thoughts.

Go to Idaho and hunt both. If the elk aren't answering there are always deer to stalk in their beds and if you can't find them either there are spruce hens to be had or bear to be called in (deer tag I think is good for bear and lion as well).

Elk hunting is the best hunt I have been on. Mule deer is pretty fun as well but Elk is much better tasting.

NJ,

PM me, I'll give you allthe details you need to throw in with our group. You can hunt both (in Colorado) at cost and we might even feed you!
