Your Wife and Your Obsession
Germ'sthread and BobCohas got me thinking .... scary, I know, .........
have any of you guys ever purchased your bowhunting items without letting the wife know? EG... scheduling deliveries when she is not home, or to your work or some place else ...... or going shopping when she isn't with you, JUST so she doesn't know what you bought???? I have allowed multiple selections, so click all that apply ...... |
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
I posted that my wife always knows what I buy and does care, but she didn't always know. I have had things delivered to work in the past, but my conscience got the better of me. It's better that she knows what I buy and we deal with the concerns as they come up.

RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
If one thing that my fiorst marriage taught was that secrets are bad. I always talk to my wife about things that I want to buy. For those who say that it's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission they've never had a country girl kick their butts.
|
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
I could not be with anyone that I had to tiptoe around or hide any purchases thatI made. I make money and buy what I want, when I want, as does she. I'll never understand hiding or "asking permission" to buy things.

RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
Keep in mind here, the question is asking, " have you ever done any of the above" .... not do you nornally do it ..... one time qualifies ....

My wife always knows what I buy and doesn't care My wife and I do not have any Credit Cards and we have 1 car payment(Had to buy a new one last week). This keeps is free to do a lot of things. The other thing that helps me is I do not have any vices. I do not smoke, drink or even go out with my buddies. I play a little golf and hunt:D Be a good boy and be good to your family!! I have certain beliefs, one I will share with the young guys is this, Credit cards can and will "inslave" you in debt. I have seen in first hand(Biological father). Keep your self free from debt and your life andmarriage will be great!!!! |

Be honest, stay home, take care of your family and all will be good!! My wife and I do not have any Credit Cards and we have 1 car payment(Had to buy a new one last week). Lisa and I were tlaking, just yesterday, about a new development up the road from us. Could we live there? Sure. Our 30 yr old home is JUST FINE with us, though. We both put 20% towards our retirement......and we're happy with our way of life. Sting (the police)has a line in one of his songs that says....."then you'll find your servant is your master". When I see all of these people with these payments and mortgages out the wazoo......I always wonder......Who owns Who? |
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
If I want something archery related, I just make it. My wife loves it. Gets me out of the house and outta her way. Not to mention saving a truckload of money. And it gives me even more ways to indulge myself in my obsession. There are all kinds of side hobbies to archery, especially if you get into the traditional and primitive side of the sport. :)

RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
Back in 97 I was tucking away $25 a week to purchase a new Oneida bow. When I finally had saved enough, the wife announced that we couldn't afford the new bow because we were fixin to buy our first house. I went into panic mode...
So mebeing the ingenious person I am, printed up fake lottery tickets with the second prize being the Oneida bow I wanted. I told the wife I bought $5 worth of lottery tickets and put them on the fridge. I then had a friend call the house (when we weren't home) to leave a message saying "this message is for Ken, just calling to say you won second place, please come pick up your bow." |

RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
I usually tell my wife what I "need" to buy, etc...and most of the times, all works fine...
For some of us, debt is the only means to get something you want...Credit can be a great useful tool if used wisely. Just my 0.02 |
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
Never been married, never will be married, not unless I meet the perfect woman, and I dont think she exists, at least not for me.
Not interested in having kids, this world is too messed up to bring a child into. Ill just stick with being single, having the occassional girlfriend, and hunting and rock climbing the rest of my life. To hell with love:D |
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
My wife knows and doesn't care!!!! But I'm on wife number two!!!!! Walt
|
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
There really was not an option that was really right for me, but chose the tell my wife as she cares option. In reality, if I am buying a less expensive item, around $75 or less, then I regularly do not bother to say anything, but for things more expensive, over $75, I will let my wife know I plan to buy it or did buy it.
|
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
My wife doesn't know what I buy and she doesn't care (I didn't see that option). I think it is about mutual respect and trust. I respect her and our family enough not to do anything to harm it and she trusts that. And vice versa.
|
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
She knows, and its fine with her, im a lucky man:)
|
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
I do what I want!!! I spend what I want!!! Wait I second, I gotta go I think I here her coming and I have got to burn these reciepts from Bass-Pro!!

RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
Almost laughed out loud when I saw this thread! I actually just bought a bow from a guy on AT, then I sold my old bows and a sstand to "pay" for it, only then did I tell her about it. Her comment was, "So, you know where our money is, if we can afford it go ahead." So all is good at my household. Of course, she is into horses and wants to show this summer, so I'm sure I'll hear about it again, lol ;).

RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
I'm lucky; no hiding here.
|
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
I don't have a wife.....yet, but my girlfriend sure gives me some grief sometimes about my purchases.
|
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
I figured out that the key time to tell or ask about purchases is when she is already screaming yes, yes, yes. Sans the Bag.
|
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
You forgot a choice: My wife/girlfriend knows what I buy and wants one too!
|
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
She's usually there with me, to decide on what to pick out. She's loves archery as much as I and understands the obsession :D
|
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
My wife doesn't care as long as I pay for it with money I earned from a side job.
Hey BobCo I got me one of them there red heads, too. When we started dateing back in high school I had an old boy tell me that no one gets as mad as a red head. Now after 8 years of marraige all I can say is, HE WAS RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!;) |
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
i have bought things before without telling the wife she buys all kinds of clothes and stuff and i don't ask what she got or how much so when i see something i want i just buy it

RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
I am extremely blessed, my wife was raised by a hunter/fisherman. When I would like something, we talk about and settle how we will afford it. I try to keep major purchases, over $200, to once a year; but things that are at least somewhat expensive $50-150 we work it all out. If it's less than $50 I probably won't talk with her about it first but I won't hide it from her either. She takes care of the books in our family so even if I wanted to sneak something by her, I couldn't.
It all comes down to trust. Do I trust her to understand the things I find important? If my purchases will hurt the family monetarily, what am I placing first? When I place them first, provide her with the financial security she desires first, I get everything I want. |
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
My wife is my biggest supporter....love her!!
|
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
I gotta say I am pretty darn lucky because my wife doesn't say a thing about any of the equipment I get. She loves the fact that I have fallen in love with the sport and knows that I am not doing worse things!!
|
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
I have a very understanding wife when it comes to my archery habit.
But then again, I don't go crazy either and buy everything I could. We have a home and 2 children that come first. She knows that I put them first and I'll use good judgement when it comes to spending the $. HOWEVER, when it comes to her wanting a new pistol or deer rifle, I can spend all the $ on her I want. It just makes sense to her. |
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
My wife spends more time in the bowshop then I do . My work doesn't allow me to get there during the store's open hours for the most part from spring through fall. She runs for me to pick up things I need. She has beenvery good at supporting my bowhuntingaddiction. Heck, I generally will walk out with more stuff then intended if she is with me when I do get to town. :D
Now that Cabelas has jewlry, she doesn't even mind going there.Hunting supply runscan get darn expensive now. D@mned Cabelas !!! [&:] We are not made of money but not hurting.WE discussevery major huntingpurchase just as we do every major purchase. That's been working for over twenty years now. Idon't seeany reason to change it by hiding anything from her. Tim |
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
I recently switched to a Cabelas credit card that I use to buy supplies and materials for my business. I pay the balance each month, so there are no finance charges and I get Cabelas credit for 1% of my purchases. This will likely work out to $300 or more a year in free gear from Cabelas: not too shabby!

RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
You know what the word "extreme" means then. :D:D:D |
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
My girlfriend (who wants the wife job) shoots a bow as well.
When I buy some new archery toy, she just asks what it does and if she should get anything else to maximise her set up. Then she gives me a kiss and we go shoot, or go fishing, or whatever.....:D Thats why she'll probably get the wife job! |
RE: Your Wife and Your Obsession
Yep. I let a redhead get ahold of me too. There have been a few times over the past29 years when I had to go into the 'duck and cover' routine. ;) ROTFLMAO!!!:DI know that routine. Hey maybe the three of us need to start a Red Head Spouse support group. :D |
