Help?
I was shooting on Tuesday and on my third arrow the arrow must have shattered on release. The tip of the arrow continued on. The tail shaft went into my left hand betweem mt thumb and index finger. Missed the bone but did nick the artery. Right now I have my hand in a temporary cast. Had surgey to fix the artery....the doctor pulled out three big pieces or arrow and she said thousands of small fibers. I will have some pictures to post up....it's hard enough to type with hand as it is.
Any body heard of anything like this happening before?? |
RE: Help?
Yes, I have heard of it happening. That is why it is critical to inspect carbon arrows everytime before you start shooting. I have made it a part of my pre-practice ritual to inspect my arrows. Also if while shooting I hit something solid or hit one shaft with another I will check those arrows out very carefully to make sure they are in good shape and safe to shoot. Another thing to keep in mind is making sure the spine of your arrow is stiff enough for your bow.

RE: Help?
Hold the phone!
I type with one hand (finger):D You got me thinking about my arrows now. Sounds painful, hope things get better real soon for you. |
RE: Help?
To many have shattered for me, I am done with them. Has people had better luck with the spiral weave? Or else I am going with a alluminum, carbon composite. Till they come out with something better.
Why even take the risk? |
RE: Help?
That is why I check my arrows often. Hope you get better soon so you can shoot.
|
RE: Help?
I have heard of that happening to other people before.
That is why I check my arrows prior to each shooting session. What is the heal time on something like that? |
RE: Help?
I have heard talk about it happening but, do not know anyone it had happened to. I use the alluminum arrows so I check them for bends and things like that anyhow. Good luck to your recovery!

RE: Help?
I've heard of it and seen pictures but was never around when it happened. And I don't ever want to be. If an arrow has a crack or should be smashed and thrown away. If you hit one with the other, check them out carefully. Any time you miss the target or critter you should double check them. Look your arrows over carefully and maybe even apply a little twisting pressure to them to expose weak areas. There was a picture a couple years ago floating around on these boards where a carbon shatterred and slayed out into several pieces that all pierced the shooters hand like yours. I mean, it was ugly. He took the picture with it still stuck in his hand.

RE: Help?
I had it happen with one of the old French made Bemans. Luckily I had a Gore-Tex jacket on that stopped me from getting anything worse than a bad bruise. I bought my first dozen a/c/c's the next day and haven't looked back. Hope you heal up soon.

RE: Help?
it can happen with any arrow must check them time and time again for defects
|
RE: Help?
Heard of this happening alot with carbons and composites, you really need to check them before every shot or you can pay dearly for not doing so. Go back to aluminums, Ive never had an alum. explode.
|
RE: Help?
From an ex aluminuim guy ...... Guys, what's the best way to check them? Where do you look? The six free arrows I received with my Dren via shop promo, some has small cracks where the inserts were .... I never shot them, as I was waiting for my CE arrows to come in, and that just didn't look right.

RE: Help?
Grab them at the fletching and the point and give them a twist, if they give at all, toss them out.
|
RE: Help?
Get well soon Goose! Will you be using a different arrow type when you're better?
Here is the picture some people have mentioned. Ouch!!! ![]() |
RE: Help?
That is pretty much what it looked like. Only mine was the left hand and i did bot have all the carbon frays. I wll get some pics up tomorrow sometime.....have a doctors appointment tomorrow. Will take some more there. I am thinking of switching to Aluminum.

RE: Help?
Or this one...[:'(][&:]

RE: Help?
That hurts just looking at it!!![:@]That would make me go to aluminum for sure. I've yet tohear of that happening with aluminum, have any of you?
|
RE: Help?
CAN this happen with an a/c/c?
If not......I'm switching.....based on THAT ONE PHOTO. I'm DEAD serious.That isscary. |
RE: Help?
Back when the first carbon wraps came out - I jumped right on the bandwagon, and picked up a dozen (I can't believe I forget the name... I'm 90% sure it was the first-generation Beman wraps)... anyway... I was borderline underspined, and blew two of them, one in the woods in deer season, and one in the yard.
One was a fluke, two was a pattern. It took me about 6 years to finally regain the courage to try a carbon arrow again. Imagine the disgust when you settle the 20 yarder on the buck's chest, only to pull the trigger, and WHAM! Then, about 3 seconds after trying to figure out what happened, you see the crested half of your arrow fluttering to the ground only 5 yards out. Not sure if I had a defective batch or what... They have come a long way though. Honestly, a kinked aluminum arrow can do the same thing. Bowhunting isn't exactly the safest sport in the world. |
RE: Help?
Ouch, man thats got to suck, hope you heal up fast.
|
RE: Help?
Thats a bummer man,
we all are hoping the best for you! |
RE: Help?
Never heard of this happening with either an aluminum or an a/c/c; definitely happens with wood, fiberglass and carbon.
