What Bow Weight Do You Use?
I am just curious to see what weight you use? And to find out how much I should use. What is the least amount you could use to to kill a deer.

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
I often have several bows and they are all set the same. Enough to kill anything on this continent, be it rubber or flesh. 60#

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
I keep mine between 65 and 70, but you don't really need that much normally.

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
I got it set at 62lbs

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
Currently I have my bow set at 63. I assume you are a young hunter, and when I started 4 years ago I shot 45. I took a buck that year, arrow didn't pass through, but lodged in the opposite shoulder. Enough to take him down in less than 50 yards. I would say not to go lower than 45, and shot placement is critical.

I bought my bow this summer set at 70 and left it.

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
Yeah I am only 15 years old and just want to get started bow hunting.

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
I have my FX set at 67#. Mainly because I want the extra punch for elk and I don't want to tinker with my draw weight when switching between deer and elk.

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
both of my bows are set at 66#. in Il. you have to pull a minum 0f 40# but i would not shoot farther than 15 to 20 yards

Where in Illinois do you live. I live there to.

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
Hunting Boy, I am also 15, and I have taken deer with draw weighs from 45 to 63. I am not a particularly strong person, so you should be able to atleast shoot 55-60 to start with. Don't overdue it though, cause that weight seems like a lot more when you are on a cold deer stand in late november and bundled up. I'd say go to your local pro shop and see how you can pull back 60, if you are able to pull it back, I would go with a bow adjustable from 60-70. Even if it is a little tough, just put the bow in your room, and everytime you go in your room draw and hold it back a couple of times, you will notice it getting easier every week. If you have trouble get one adjustable from 50-60, even if you are a fairly strong kid, you must use muscles you don't normally use to pull back a bow, so don't worry if you can't pull very much. Just condition your body and shoot what you are comfortable with, if you shoot under 60, I would stay with fixed-blade broadheads...hope this helps.

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
No I was asking Jimmya. Sorry for the confusion. I am fairly strong beacuse I have to man handle my dirtbike and i play basketball. I tryed pulling back 55 today, and it was fairily easy,so i will try to put more on my bow. I think it goes up to 65 or 70.

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
At the moment, 59 Lbs
I'll be going to 62 Lbs...NOT because I want the extra power that bad, but I am looking at going from 100gn heads to 125 gn heads...which means going from CX200 to cx300 arrows...with the 125 gn heads on cx300 arrows, the spine will be PERFECT at 62 Lbs. p.s. Don't worry about $#!T like this....it's a sickness <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> |
RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
Set at 67 lbs the last time I checked . I started low and worked up to that weight and then just left it there . I have used 45 lbs on a recurve bow for deer .
|
RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
I would try and get between 45 and 60, make sure of your shot at 45 pounds. Don't try to take him quartered towards you, if you hit that shoulder your in trouble...

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
I shoot about 63 lbs.

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
I shoot 65lbs. But I'm 42 yrs. old, 6'0" and 240 lbs. You said you pulled 55 and it was fairly easy. Then start with that. You don't want to be straining with the weight when you're trying to hit a target. 55 is plenty to kill whitetails with.

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
I shoot 40 pounds and I killed 2 deer this year. Both were complete passthroughs/double lung shots, and one went 25 yards the other went 10 yards.
|
RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
You should shoot what you are comfortable with. Sit on the floor with your legs flat and draw. Is it easy? Personally I have my FeatherMax set at 70lbs.
|
RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
Some states have a min. on draw weight. You don't want to overbow yourself though because you will develop bad habits and do more harm then good.I shoot 75 now and when I was your age I shot between 90-120Lbs.,but these days you don't need it.
|
RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
i shoot 75 lbs....you need to start w/a weight that you feel comfortable with. when i say "comfortable" i don't mean what you can draw when its 70 degrees outside and you're wearing a tee-shirt. im talking about what you can draw after sitting in a treestand in 30 degree weather for 2 hrs w/3 layers of clothes on. i've seen far too often guys make the mistake of overbowing themselves for field conditions just because they can shoot 30 shots in a 3d tourney. also huntinfool14 said he killed deer w/40 lbs. that may be however check your states hunting laws because some states have minimum draw weights for hunting. here in Ohio you can't deerhunt w/a bow less than 45 lbs.
good luck. |
RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
For years I shot my PSE set at 76 pounds. I was flinging 525 grain aluminum poles at 252 feet per second. 2 years ago I bought a Darton, dropped it to 67 pounds and now I fling 425 grain carbons at 265 fps. I'll never go back. I figure I can still knock down a big V8 Dodge Ram Truck with one shot.

53# recurve. Overkill for deer.

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
Between 65-70 normally. I usually hear "40 lbs" as the minimum that most places have set for draw weight in terms of hunting deer.

60 Pound Longbow 70 Pound compound |
RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
I would start with 55lbs, and shoot it 3 times a week. Then go up by 3-5lbs, and repeat until you're shooting your hunting draw weight. You don't want to start off with a rotator cuff injury. I started with 70lbs and shot three times a week because I could pull it back easily with my right arm. What I ended up with was a sore left shoulder that still hasn't completely gotten back to normal, two years later. I shoot 60lbs for hunting whitetail now.

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
I use 71#, i could pull more comfortably but this is more than enough

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
I'd get a bow that's adjustable btw 50and 60.I personally shoot at 59 lbs and could go heavier, but don't see a reason. Your trying to put an arrow into a specific spot. This is a game of finess.I believe the majority of the guys that pull #90-100 have other reasons than hunting for the weight. If you wanna pull 75+ pounds...go to the gym<img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
I shoot my Mathews at 62# ,as all of my bows have been.My son , however , is 10years old and killed his 1st and 2nd deer this year with his Browning Micro-eclipse set at a whopping 37#.Both shots were complete pass-throughs at 17 and 12 yards and both were quartering away shots.I give alot of the credit to good broadheads.

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?

RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
78lbs on my Mcpherson Terminator @ 65% let-off & 85 lbs on my Jennings Speedmaster @ 80% let-off. Don't let the 85lbs. sound like its too much. With the let-off it is like pulling back 60#. I had the bow down on 70lbs. but it seems to shoot & hold a tighter group @ 85lbs. So that is why I shoot it @ 85#. But like the others have said start @ what you are comfortable with
|
RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
70# but use what you can pull back easily. I wouldn't recomend anything less than 50# for deer.
|
RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
A lady here... When I bought mine it was set at 57#, but when I had my brother inspect it he found that the string was installed upside-down! (This was a brand-new bow from a sporting goods store) We think that whoever installed it must have not realized that it was left-handed. So my brother fixed it for me. The pull feels the same but it still might be different. If I get the chance I will have it checked. Boy did my arrows group nice after switching that string!
I believe in PA you must use at least a 35# weight. |
RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
I have mine set at 70 lbs. Like the other said start off at a poundage you are comfortable to shoot and work up if you need/want to.
|
RE: What Bow Weight Do You Use?
I have mine set at 70lbs and get my pse arrows at 400 grains going at 300fps. Should be good enough for deer. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
