Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
Title says it all. What bugs you more, if either? Shooting and missing, or not being presented with a shot at all?
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
id rather not get off a shot because i hate to miss. sometimes its nice to just enjoy the situation even if you dont get a shot off and you watch the deer walk by.
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I'd rather not get a shot. You can always adjust your set up and have another go next time the wind gets right. Misses just make my stomach turn.
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I'd much rather have no shot opportunity than to miss. If you spend any amount of time hunting, there are going to be days where a shot isn't is the cards. Too many factors involved in missing a shot that can get you to guessing why you missed. I have great days in a stand even when no shot presents itself.

RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
It would urk the crap out of me to have nice 8 or 10 pointer within bow range and not having a shot present itself. [:@]
Taking a shot and missing is an all to common thing to get upset over but it does happen. :( |
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
That's why they call it hunting and not killing,Iwish I would never miss but It happens to the best of us. To answer your question I'd rather not get the shot off cause you still get the rush of getting close to the animal and you don't have to kick yourself in the ass for eternity!!
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
Definately not get a shot off........still get to enjoy the show and don't have to re-live it 1,000 times kicking yourself in the butt for screwing up.
Unless of course you don't get a shot chance because you made a sound or got busted moving........then you get to do the above anyways [8D] |
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I'd rather not get the shot off! Missing makes me do nothing except want to get sick!!
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
Yeah, definately not get a shot off........missing makes me sick! Seeing them and not getting a shot off gets the blood pumping and makes the next hunts better because you know he could re-appear at any moment.
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I would rather not have the shot try again later
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
Personaly if I had the choice, Id rather not spook the deer and make it any smarter than it already is. Last year I had a 160" 10 point come in with no shot oppertunity and luckily he walked off having no clue I was even there. I would have loved to put an arrow threw both his lungs, but at least he will be around next year. Later in the season I had a 150" 8 point come in on me at about 5 yards on the ground. He caught me trying to draw andhe high tailedit out of there in a hurry, and I was HOT. Not only did I not get a shot, I just made an already smart buck even smarter.
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I would rather not have a shot oppurtunity than to take a high risk shot, which I did last fall on a 150 class. I watched him an a doe for about an hour an ten minutes an had them within 25 yards just to watch it come un done in the last few yards, never got a shot.

RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I guess it depends on how it happened for me ..... One time I was sitting in my favorite spot watching deer consistantly to my right ...squirrels were everywhere ... the woods were so noisey .... I had heard what I thought was a squirrel to my left ...... I didn't turn around ... something caught my left peripheral vision ... some thing big, and right under me ... I look to see what had to be a 250# 150+" buck, which is big for my area, walk at a steady pace right away, not stopping for anything ... no shot.....
In that case, I woulda much rather a deer duck my slightly high 30 yard shot, causing a clean miss ... |
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I'd rather not get a shot off, the almosts haunt you slightly less than the miss's...lol
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
Misses happen I guess, depending on low light and small branches and such, but I would much rather, and have, let a deer walk by and not shoot rather than take a shot and "hope" I hit it. No shot is better than a missed shot because a missed shot is just a few inches away from a bad shot that could wound the deer without killing it. Personally, if I'm not 100% sure the arrow is going to hit the kill zone, barring mechanical failure, I don't take it.
And this is my first post as I just found this site today. Hi all! |
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
tough one!!!
Miss, if it is a big buck........not getting a shot, if it is a big buck![8D] Bo |
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
not get the shot off.......enough said.
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I would rather not get a shot off than miss or even worse wound the animal.
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I have to agree with everyone. Not getting a shot off is by far better. I mean that's part of hunting. Missing a shot means you did everything right as far as set-up, scent control, and all that stuff that leads up to the shot, then you blow it. Opening day last season i did my homework and hung my stand in a spot i knew they were using and i had 2 does walk 20 yrds away and i blew it. Talk about a killer. I didnt sleep very good that night. I did make it up and ended up killing 3 deer last season, so maybe it's better to get those misses out of the way.;)

RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
are you talkin take a risky shoot or just one or the other I will take a riskey shot but not a shoot that wont kill the deer like a quarting to me shoot
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
not get the shot off
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
not get the shot off
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I'd say I'd rather not get a shot off. That way, I can live the rest of my life saying "if he'd have just come two more steps, he was toast." If I whiff, I'm beating myself up over it for 3,4,5, 10 years down the line.
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I'd rather not get the shot. If it's a marginal shot I probably wouldn't take it. If I'm going to shoot at all, I'd rather miss clean than wound an animal.
I hate long tracking jobs. |
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
It bothers me more when i miss, just ask my arrowfrom last season[8D]They are expensive.I would rather not get the shot, that way i know i may get another crack at em.
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I would rather not have a shot then miss.
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I would rather not having to track the deer down. So the answer is obvious, I'd rather have a good shot then just shooting. Done it many times. :)
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
It bugs me a lot more to miss than to not get a shot. If I don't get a good shot and don't try to pull something outta my backside then I'm proud of myself. If I miss then its my fault and I have to worry about if I wounded a deer or not. The thing that iritates me the most though is if I have a shot, but I missed my chance to draw on a buck. Then you've got a 5 minute stare down with your game :) I don't know how many times I've caught myself being stupid and missing chances to draw on different deer. I'll just be watching and watching them come in and then all of a sudden they are there and I think whoops missed a step in the process lol.

RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I'd definitely rather not get a shot off, because that may mean that I was using good judgment. Good question though.
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I would rather not get a shot. Missing a shot is a real confidence killer.
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
This one was really close???????
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I would rather not get a shot then miss. Because most of the time when you miss, it’s your own fault.
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I'd rather not get a shot off, I dont want to take a chance on just wounding the deer.
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
To clarify a little. Regarding the "miss" I meant you had an easy shot that you would always take, not a winging an arrow at one shot.
Honestly I'm suprised its pretty much a landslide for not getting a shot off. I figured there would be several guys chirping that you can't kill one if you don't shoot. It's cool to see people dislike missing like I do. It really bugs me to miss. I don't take risky shots, so I have noexcuses to miss. I feel the shot should be a formality, getting the deer in range is the harder part. |

RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I dont know I have never missed.:D
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
Definitely no shot for me. The two encounters I remember the most from this past season are two deer I never got a shot at. Awesome encounters, but nothing to show for it!
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I've missed.
I see a lot of deer......and decide to take few. It's a big deal ANY TIME someone decides to take an animal......so the blood's pumping whether you get off a shot, or not. I can tell you from my experiences......that the anticipation ....the waiting to get back in the woods....is greater, once I've seen an animal, but wasn't offered a shot opportunity. Bittersweet......to see a deer that catches your fancy......and eludes you at the same time. Of all the deer I saw, last season,.......the ONE that I think about all the time....is the one I've had @ ZERO yds, twice. |
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
I would rather not get the shot, in hopes I would geta better shotat the animal later on..
|
RE: Would you rather miss or not get a shot off?
Pro's and con's either way. You can learn a lot from a miss, or at leastshould. I know, it sucks to miss, but if you hunt- you miss.
You can learn a lot from seeing ananimal that close and not getting a shot, too. If I had to answer, I guess I would take the "not get a shot", as I did not educate the animal and hopefully he will be back. |
