So, two of Washington State's most ridiculous game laws (in my opinion, obviously) are that we aren't allowed to use mechanical broadheads on big game nor are we allowed any electronics on our arrows/bows.
With all the praise mechanical heads have gained in recent years, I think its about time my state changes the rules a bit. Even when I first started archery hunting I said I'd never use them for big game, but after reading articles about them over the last few years I'd at least like to try them out to make that decision.
As for the electronics, I'd love to be able to use luminocks while hunting. A lot of my early season (September) hunting is done at dusk in an area where leaving an animal overnight is out of the question if you plan on retrieving the meat. Coyotes will absolutely devour an animal in a 24 hour period in this area.
So, how would you as a hunter approach this situation? I realize I need to contact someone, but whom? Would a petition of local hunters be in order?
I'd really like to at least say I tried, even if the laws aren't changed.

First I would contact your local game and parks to figure out the right numbers to call. If that leads to a dead end go ahead and voice your oppinion in a letter, asking to have the law changed! I live in Nebraska so there arent those types of laws here, but best hopes to you in finding a solution!

Wash Hunter, this is a problem, i'm not sure what their reasoning would be behind this. Just stubborn i guess. i would start by writing a letter to the head of your wildlife districit, if no response go one over him and so on. A petition would be a great thing to send a long with the letter. Sit in on meetings of the DNR and DOW. Get your local sportsmans clubs on board, if they support you then they may have friends that works for the state in these areas that can push your concerns to the top.
Good Luck! Keep us posted on your progress!

Dan, I've written several letters to the Oklahoma Wildlife Department and have found that they are fairly responsive. The thing that I've found is that when you are cordial and professional the results are much better. Another thing, is that (as cliche as it sounds) "the squeaky wheel gets the grease." Use statistics if you can from other states, their main worry is probably that if they give an inch, "people" will take a mile.
After about 5 letters in the last 2 years the OWD has officially decreased the combined limit of bucks in a season from 3 to 2. Something I've been hoping (and working) on for quite some time. Now if we can just get them to move the gun season to December, we'll be in business.

Let everyone know about it. Write to your state's politicians. Post it on the Nuge's thread. He may not be liked, but he and those who do like him will fight on your behalf to get this changed. "Hammer on!"
