Stroll Down Memory Lane:

What make of bow did you kill your first deer with? or What was your favorite hunting bow (pre single cam revolution.

Every year I think back on all the bows that I have owned and one keeps sticking out in my mind. It was a HoytPro Force Cam in the tan camo. It was smooth by standards of the day and deadly accurate. I sold it to keep up with the jones's. I took my first doe with it and hindsight being what it is I wish I would have saved that one bow.

My first bow kill was with a Bear Polar LTD. I was shooting instinctively with fingers in the mid '70s, it was a small doe in Bradford Co. Pa. I remember like it was yesterday.:)

Going way back now, 1st bow- BEAR Whitetail ll,Easton aluminum arrows, razorback broadheadswas so disgusted with it I threw it rightin the swamp.Next was a BROWNING XCaliber ll(wooden) Beeman arrows, anderson broadheads. I killed plenty of deer with it, but lost plenty too. The wooden Browningversion was far too noisy. The anderson broadheads did major damage to deer, but do to their size, they flew aweful.

Same bow as pigiron, that old bear whitetail 2. I think it was in 1988. It was a doe at 20 yards.
killed 2 others with that bow before getting a Hoyt.

Yes it was, early 80's. My friends and I didn't know what the hellwe were doing. We would shoot into a pile of gravel, then wonderwhy we couldn't shoot strait. Wish I could re-live those days. I'd a done a few things different. One thing i do missare my tree climbers, I had a pair from the phone co., they would use-em to climb telephone poles. I could shimmy up any tree in seconds. I'd wear them things to school if they'd let me :D

PSE Spirit - 1990'ish. Here's a picture of the bow - mine wasn't setup quite so nice - I had the Gamegetter II arrows, which were a little more ghetto than the XX75's pictured. My release was also ghetto fabulous - Bear Crackshot, if my memory is right - little T Handled job with a thumb button. My broadheads were those el-cheapo Bear ones that were $1.29 each. Mine didn't have a stabilizer either. Star Hunter rest instead of the TM shown. I actually got a lot of deer with that little bow. Mine maxxed out at 60 pounds and had the tube-style peep.

Memories....

I had a Bear Whitetail Hunter, XX75's. No sights, shot with fingers and took a basket 6 my first year with it. Only deer taken at camp that year and all the grown, experienced hunters were mad :D. That was 1985.

1980's ? It was with my new bow at that time a Bear/Jennings bow Bear Bruin and I still hunt with it today. I figure if it works don't fix it. As i have enjoyed some great sucess with my bow.

I had a recurve and a Whitetail II hand-me-down, but my first deer came with the PSE Spirit that I posted a picture of on Page 3.First deer wasfawn doe at about 20 yards in 90 or 91. The next year,91 or 92I think, I got this spike. Sorry about the graphic pic - I had to cut its throat. Looking back, I totally had no idea what I was doing out there - just huntin'. I was happier than a pig in mud with that deer.

pigiron 03-08-2007 07:53 AM

RE: Stroll Down Memory Lane:

Right-on man, sounds like your telling my story. Had a whitetail ll, first buck was a spike.(I didn't have to gaff his throat though, but you gotta do what you gotta do) :D

Man this puts a smile on my face and a tear in my I. In 1988 I had just started a new job and one of my future best friends offered to let me hunt his farm. First day there I was wearing old Air Force jungle camo and grunted a spike in at first light and drove a Thunderhead 125 on a Easton XX75 out of my Clearwater Power Mag (or as I call it now Powerless Mag) through the deer jaw and down through it neck. Not pretty but he only ran 50 yards. I drug him to my buddies house and hung him up and went back up and grunted a 10 point into ten yards and double lunged him and he's on my wall today Sad to say that my buddy died of cancer almost two years ago but everytime that I looke at that deer head on my wall I think of that day.

First deer kill, 7pt buck browning summit Easton XX75's and the thunderhead 125g 60lbs 28in dl. Shot him right in the ass. Just as I shot he turned and I hit the main artery that goes back there and he ran about 40 yrds. It was a sunday afternoon about 75 80 degrees out he was following a doe. Just like it happened yesterday. (15 years ago)
