RE: Giraffe hunting?
My taxidermist did it a few years back.. the story is awesome, not to mention the size of the shoulder mount :D
He did it w/ a bow too, it was pretty impressive, he's got the rib w/ the arrow sticking through it next to the mount.. pretty neat display. And yes i think its for the trophy. |

RE: Giraffe hunting?
i wonder what giraffe tastes like. Chicken, Pork, Beef, Venison? How do you score a "trophy" giraffe anyway?
|
RE: Giraffe hunting?
I asked this question for 1 simple reason.......I've never heard of these animals being hunted.
I wanted to know if this was an isolated occurrence.....or common practice. I don't have a problem with you shooting bald eagles, pigmy elephants or sasquatches.....as long as there's a valid season for the animal. I just wanted to learn more about it BEFORE I formed an opinion. |
RE: Giraffe hunting?
that musta been a big neck roast [8D]

RE: Giraffe hunting?
Im not sure if he ate the meat or donoated it to the locals... Either way im sure it was consumed.
|
RE: Giraffe hunting?
Well again, how the heck do you scrore a giraffe? It doesn't have much for headgear - just a couple little stumps on the top of his head. Aller, were you suggesting scoring them based on their Vertebraes or was that comment directed to something else?
|
RE: Giraffe hunting?
It was my lame attempt at a joke...I guess I should have added :D:D:D:D:D

RE: Giraffe hunting?
As far as i can tell there is no scoring method for giraffe.
Checked SCI and they dont have one, if there was a scoring method it would be there.. |
RE: Giraffe hunting?
ok, then how would you judge a giraffe in the field? I don't really know anything about the giraffe so I'm not sure what to even think about if I had one in my sights. What makes it a trophy giraffe as compared to just another giraffe thats walking about the savanaha? I'm sorry I keep asking this, but this really boggles me lol.
|
RE: Giraffe hunting?
There probably isn't a lot of field judging going on. Or being in it for the 'mature' factor. I would think that it's more for the guy who has really tall ceilings and simply needs to decorate the whole wall.:D
|
RE: Giraffe hunting?
thats pretty funny:D
I can go with that I guess. It jut is wierd to think of not field judging an animal before you take it. All the other game species that people hunt have a scoring system or at least characteristics that allow you to judge an animal. |
RE: Giraffe hunting?
Actually, when they were hunting it they were looking for a male. The one they shot was determined to be a mature male. How they determined it, I don't know.
|
RE: Giraffe hunting?
A local guy I know went over last year for the sole purpose of hunting Giraffe with a bow.......said it's actually very difficult to spot and stalk these things and he did not take one home (Not sure HOW you actually take one home but anyway.....)
Think about how well you can see from a treestand, that's a Giraffe all the time. :D |
RE: Giraffe hunting?
Vertebraes!
Giraffes have 7 vertebrae in their necks--just like humans(just some worthless trivia:)) |

RE: Giraffe hunting?
giraffes have plenty of backstraps [8D]
|
RE: Giraffe hunting?
In the two cases I know of people shooting giraffes...it was because they were sick...both were hunting kudo and other african species and the guides said for another fee we can let you shoot this dieing giraffe...one had cancer in it's leg the other was really old...and they try to get them out of the gene pool...
|
RE: Giraffe hunting?
Are neck shots ethical?
|
RE: Giraffe hunting?
My taxidermist also went to Africa and took a giraffe as well as like 7 or 8 other animals.
All of the meat is left to (not donated to, that would indicate that you own it) the locals. and the hides and skulls are shipped back. |
RE: Giraffe hunting?
Can you imagine the shoulder mount...... you would need one tall cathedral ceiling for that sucker!!!!
This thread is crackin' me up! LOL :D |

RE: Giraffe hunting?
My experience with giraffes:
Most folks that shoot giraffes do so because they've shot just about everything else. This is the rule, and of course, there are exceptions. Some guys think they're cool and look great in trophy rooms. One hunter on my last safari was dying to kill a giraffe. In the end, he did not do it. He spent the $3500 trophy fee on critters which presented a greater challenge. IMO, a giraffe would be one of the easy trophies a person could ever kill. They are very easy to approach...The hardest thing about killing one is getting an arrow through their thick skin and bone structure.A giraffe'sheart is enormous and thus an easy target!I was with a Ph that shot one from 30 yards with a 70 lb Hoyt Magnatech. The arrow bounced off! Another Ph shotthe giraffein the back of the head with a 375 H&H as it was running away. The thing crumpled! We tried the bow again from a mere six yards. The arrow penetrated about four to fiveinches. After skinning the beast, It was easy to see why the arrow from that particular bow setup had little effect. The skin was nearly an inch and a quarter thick. No kidding! A bigger bow would have been a better choice. Thisgiraffe was a four year old cull animal (a bull). SCI has no official scoring method for either giraffe or zebra. But it is pretty easy to distinguishmature animals. See links below: http://www.huntingpictures.net/showphoto.php/photo/11424/size/big/sort/1/cat/500 http://www.huntingpictures.net/showphoto.php/photo/11419/size/big/sort/1/cat/500 I would definitely hunt zebra (have actaully spent 42 days trying to get one via spot and stalk), but I'll pass on the giraffe (they're cool to see though). |
RE: Giraffe hunting?
I'm gonna make my million selling giraffe calls and rattling antlers:D
|
RE: Giraffe hunting?
I did not know they hunted them either, definatly not my bag of tricks.
|
RE: Giraffe hunting?
how can you tell that zebra is mature?:):):):)

And yes i think its for the trophy. I'd rather hunt a full season in the bitter Wisconsin cold and shoot a doe on the last day of the season than to call an animal that has a brain the size of a pea a trophy. Oh yeah, that show on Vs. Extreme something or other. Where they hunt wild game in Africa, I think is a joke. "Lets walk up to this elephant and wait for it to charge. Then all the trackers (5 total) can open up their shotguns/rifles on it to bring it down for the hunter." Dumb and it gives our sport a BAD NAME. |

RE: Giraffe hunting?
Schobs,
He wasn't...I let him walk...wasn't big enough! LOL Burbaust99, In Alaska, bears are considered non-consumable and thus you are not required to take the meat from the field. I hear you though. I have had my teeth into some pretty good "sweet and sour" bear served over rice! Five of us actually lived on bear meat for several days while waiting for the weather to clear. It was very tasty right off the campfire grill. MDBUCKHUNTER, To each his own...Honestly, you can make a hunt like that as hard or as easy as you like. I have never hunted elephant, but I look forward to doing it with a bow... Are you up on all the info coming out of South African right now? It appears they have a major surplus of elephants...kind of like the surplus of elk in Rocky Mountain National Park. Point being...they have got to cull some to maintain the biodiversity of Kruger National park. A point blank frontal shot to the brain is a sure fire method of stopping an elephant inhis tracks. Anything short of that can and does get messy. Besides, where's the challenge of shooting them from, let's say, 100 yards away? Remember, they need to be culled and it sure beats sitting in the cold. Hunting, at least for me, should not be a spectator sport. I do not have a problem with hunting shows, videos, etc-they have their place as learning tools. But, as such, they should be bought and paid for. I hate it when the general public has access to the things we do.IMO, there is nothing glamourous in killing one of God's creatures, especially if you love em like I do... I do not want Joe Public watching as I do what I need to do as a conservationist. |
RE: Giraffe hunting?
can someone please explain to me the purpose of hunting animals you don't or won't eat! call me a prude but if I can't or won't eat it I ain't shooting it. I saw one where they shot a Lion unfoutuantly I had to spend a month explaing to my 6yo daughter why someone shot Simba LOL
|
RE: Giraffe hunting?
I must admit I shot a giraffe last saturday it was different but they are just too easy to hunt specially in a spot and stalk situation, you can spot them a long way off and with their heads so far up you can sneak up on them with ease.
Here is the pic of the one I shot I am not proud and wont be getting any sort of mount done.;) |
RE: Giraffe hunting?
Now I'd like to see the hide done. That in itself would be worth saving if a mount isn't done out of the animal. A thick skinned animal would make for a great rug or wall covering mount.
|
RE: Giraffe hunting?
I'm left speechless on this one........I can't think of one worthy thing to say.....
|
RE: Giraffe hunting?
Ausie-guy I hope the wind doesn't blow to hard cause the giraffe target would be airborne. Stakes have to be well in the ground to hold it :D
|
RE: Giraffe hunting?
I wounder what i scored
