MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?
OK, folks. Let's see if I can get you guys stirred up a bit. As you know, I'm buying a new bow this year. First time I've ever shopped for a bow. From what I've learned on here, I need a short ATA length because I ground hunt alot. (under cedar trees, kneeling in brush, etc.) I also need a long brace height for stability. My draw length is 30" and my old bow was set at 65lbs pull. I've tried other bows set at 65 and it seemed to be fine. I've got carte blanche from the wife to "spend whatever it takes to make you happy". (God I love that woman!) So, given that criteria, do I buy the Mathews SQ2, the Hoyt Havoctec, or the PSE Firestorm Lite? I haven't handled any of these particular models. I have drawn a Hoyt Magnatec, a Mathews MQ1, and a PSE Team Fitzgerald. It seems as though I would be able to get any one of these customized to my setup as far as draw length, poundage, and let off %. I know of dealers in the area for PSE and Hoyt. I'm searching for a Mathews dealer as well. Well OK boys, let me have it! I know I probably just started a major %^&* storm about bows again, but you guys know more about them than I do.

RE: MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?
I would go with the hoyt. The new line of hoyts that came out this year are AWSOME!!! It's so aggresive I couldn't believe it. But very stable and forgiving. Extreamly fast and the most accurate I've seen in a while. The bow is short but shoots like a longer bow. The best bow I've ever seen. If I had the money, one would be in my truck now.

Get Serious get a HOYT.

RE: MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?
You definetely know how to start something! I've had Hoyt and currently have a SQ 2. It shoots like a longer bow and I LOVE it! It's a personal choice though
|
RE: MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?
What??No mention of the LEGACY?
|
RE: MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?
OOPS! Sorry jsasker, My second choice, but many's first choice
|
RE: MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?
I was looking for something shorter than that. The Legacy is 34" ATA. The SQ2 is 31". The Hoyt Havoctec is 31". And the PSE Firestorm Lite is 30". Brace height is 8.5" for the SQ2, 7.75" for the Havoctec, and 8" for the Firestorm Lite. The IBO ratings are 305fps for the SQ2, 308fps for the Havoctec, and 300fps for the Firestorm Lite. Weight is 3.7lbs. for the SQ2, n/a for the Havoctec, and 3.2lbs. for the Firestorm Lite. See my dilema? They are all about the same specifications. So which one do you prefer?

RE: MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?
Yeah, don't rule out the Razortec either. It is still short enough to be considered a "shortie"...:). My suggestion, as always, would be the Hoyt. I believe they have the most technologically advanced designs and materials.
I do not think that you could go wrong with any of the choices though. |
RE: MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?
BBH, Just speaking from my personal trials, I would only consider the SQ 2. Remember this is ME and you should make that determination yourself. I'm 6'2" and at about 240 this bow seems small but, I have a 30 inch draw and the Q2 is the smoothest shooting, forgiving "small" bow that I have tested. I have had a number of "bad luck" incidents with the Hoyts. My hunting partner just had one blow up and he required medicle assistance.
You gotta remember though that these are my experiences. I'm sure there are a number of hunters that have had no problems with the Hoyts and some may have had problems with Matthews. I am fortunate enough to live 30 miles from Sparta, WI and have picked their brains a number of times. Buy the one your more comfy with, for sure! |
RE: MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?
What we call short today is too short for me , if I were you I'd look at a q2XL or a protech . You have a 30 inch draw so you could probably sit on your butt and shoot either of those bows , of course thats not proper form . If you want a shorter bow Check a q2 but I believe you'd be happyer with a slightly longer ata to match your longer draw .
We all have different oppinions , if we did'nt the world would be a BORING place |
RE: MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?
Neither of those bows....
Go with a Champion Mustang RST for $500, You'll love it * Never shoot at the first deer you see, wait for the MONSTER that's lagging behind * |
RE: MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?
Bought an SQ2 but later went for the Legacy instead. SQ2 was an awesome bow but I liked the smoother draw of the Legacy, which is also a factor of a longer ATA length
If you want a short bow then the SQ2 would be awesome. It sports an 8.5" brace height which at the speed it shoots can't be beat IMO. You may want to check out BowTech's line as well. They make a mighty mite and tech 29 that look great. I'd only go Matthews or Bowtech. But it's your $$ and you ought to shoot everything your looking at back to back before you buy. That's the only way you'll truely be satisfied. |
RE: MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?
I currently own a Hoyt. I had a XI for almost ten years. So I have only owned two, but shot several. Forget our opinions, go with what you shoot the best. There is more to a product then just a name. Everyone has a story about a quality bow blowing up.
|
RE: MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?
From what I understand, the Bowtech line deserves a good thorough look.
|
RE: MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?
I would personally pick the SQ2 for the fact that I also have a 30" draw and love the weight and feel of a Mathews...
Just like everyone else, its just an opinion |
RE: MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?

RE: MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?
Shoot them all and buy the one that feels right. In fact, shoot several and buy the one that feels right. Your selection is over a very wide price range. You're comparing apples to oranges to dried up prunes. Buy the best you can afford for the purpose you're going to use it.

Mathews Legacy is a great bow, also the Q2 is excellant, the SQ2 is a little short for me. Good luck on your search.

RE: MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?
I guess I should clearify the wife comment. I'll get to spend whatever I want on my bow equipment but I'll pay for it. That woman can CLEAN OUT a Walmart faster than anyone I know! Plus she wants to start bowhunting next year with a crossbow. By the time next season rolls around I'l have spent twice as much on her as I will on my stuff. Oh well, it's only money right? lol As for shooting sitting on my butt, that's the way most of my shots come off anyway. Sitting under cedar trees. But I sit on an old metal folding chair. I practice that way so my bow and pins are set up for it. If I go to get in my tree stand I always reset my pins by praticing stand up shots. So you think that's bad then IJIMMY?

RE: MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?
you can't go wrong with any of them, great companies...go with the one with the best customer service...this is the reason i bought a PARKER ultralite 31...31" ata, 310 ibo, 2.9 pounds, lifetime warranty, 80 % letoff...nothing better then being able talk directly to a tech rep, rather then just a call center...good luck in your search

RE: MATHEWS, HOYT or PSE?
I would have bought a sq2 if I hadn't have come across a great deal on a q2xL. I have had it 3 years and have harvested 8 deer with it. shoot it all the time and haven't touched the sights or the rest since I first tuned it and sighted it in. It is so smooth and plenty fast. I love it and probably won't by another one for several years.
