Default NOW that waaaassssssss COLD!!!!

So Len and I went bowhunting this AM right in the middle of gun season. It was 4 degrees when we got out of the truck. I had enough clothes on to survive anything. While he piddled at the truck, I walked ahead of Len the hundred yards from the truck to the creek crossing where we cross on a gravel spot. I soon realized(about midway across) that the water was deeper than normal. I also realized I was walking in a bunch of slush. That was just before I went over the top of my boots. BBBBBBRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr The slush had built up on the gravel bar falls and had made a dam that held back the water. Len caught up to me at my tree... he was going further. I told him my plight with the wet feet. He said let me know when you want out. I sat there until about 8:45 and when Len signaled down, I was out of there. The water had frozen the inserts in my boots into ice. Dang that was cold. I broke the ice off the laces while in my tree and was able to loosen them just enough to force a couple hand warmers down to my ankles. It may have helped, but when I got home I still had ice in my boots. We saw about 10 but no shots. Something had spooked them and they came across our front and up the hill onto private ground. DANG.... that was one cold set of feet. I turned the shower to scald and put the old water massage on full bore. My toes were like little old freezer burned weenies out of Beans and Weenies. BBBrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I'm to old for this stuff. Nahhhhhhh!!!

Hey David -

Let me know when the little piggy turns black & falls off - just kidding . I'm sure that there is some bar that ArticBowman knows about that serves a drink that's been blessed with a frostbitten toe or two.

But seriously, frostbite is nothing to play with - see below - fairly gross.

Yeah really Justin. Dave, I know you wanted to hunt but I would have went back to the truck. Maybe carry an extra pair of socks in your backpack or something. Be careful out there guys. No deer is worth losing body parts over. Well, I'm taking the stepson out now shotgunning. It's a whole 42 degrees with bright sun 4 hours before dark. Dang! That's cold! LOL

KEEP IT LEGAL. KEEP IT SAFE. OR WE MAY NOT GET TO KEEP IT AT ALL.

David--you're right it was cold! It was 1 degree at my house when I went out to sit in a lifeless woods for hours. As I walked through the 10 inches of white powder, I was thinking, "and I wanted to move to Montana when I retire???" I like very cool weather, but this zero degree stuff is getting a little harder to take than it used to be! I saw a couple of foxes and birds while out. They were the only things that drew a breath near me.

Today's small bucks are tomorrow's trophies.

I had the same thing happen a few years back. Ever since then my feet are the first to get cold no matter how many million grams of thisulate I have in my boots. The only thing that works for me are hand warmers in my boots.

Bow.... I had put some toe warmers under my inserts when I left for the woods... but when you flood the boot they don't work so well. Do I hear "New Boots" for Xmas. Nah... she'd never go for it.

about ten years ago my brother and i were 4 miles back in the aderondacks of ny,it was -6 out. we came to a creek about jumping weith but when i jumped i landed on what looked like very hard ground. those crazy beavers had dug out under the bank,so as i landed t slowly went down.as i sank up past my knees i through myself around and tried to land on my back on solid ground.
good thing i had on polypro long jons and wool pants, some how no water got into the boots(maybe i moved real fast lol) with in 5 minutes the wool was frozen, but we kept on walking.he wanted toget to the truck, but i was looking for a place to make a shelter to dry off and stay the night.(boy scout training in me) all ended well
a tip ; take in a good survival kit and know how to use it
