Looking for bow suggestions....

Ok I am thinking about buying a bow and taking up bow hunting this year to give me more opportunities to shoot some deer and such this year. Anyway I am looking for suggestions on a good beginner bow for a reasonable price. I don't want to spend a tone of cash on my first bow but I want one that will last me some time till I become proficient enough for a pricier bow.

Also info on what all I would need to get started in bow hunting. Should I go for a package deal or buy everything seperate? Anyways any insite you seasoned bow hunters can offer would be great.

Your best bet would be to go to your local Bow shop and ask for their help. Im sure they will get you pointed in the right direction. The Reflex Bows are a good bow for the $. They are made by Hoyt and they will not rock your pocket. Im sure you will get alot of help on this site. There are some Top Notch Bowhunters that will help you out for sure! GOOD LUCK!

You do not know what you are getting into, if you like it you might as well sell your guns. I would just go to a pro shop.

Thanks for the info everyone. I will definitely be going to a local shop and looking around. I was figuring on spending around ay $400 at the most. Hopefully I can get enough info to know which brands to stay away from and which ones to really look at. Hopefully I can get down to look at them this weekend.

Are there any particular brand of bows in the $300-$400 range I should look at over others? Probably going to head to a shop here in oklahoma and look at what they offer and hopefully find a knowledgable salesman.

Shoot them all ... I mean shoot them all ... you decide ...then report back with pics!! keep in mind, if the bow is bare, you'll need $300+ to outfit it ...

Its funny how we all tell him to go to a local pro shop... what if there isn't one? I know when I got into archery there wasn't an archery pro shop within an hour and a half of me!

i agree with the other guys, shoot everything they have. You will be able to feel/hear the differences between the vibration, noise (which u can always limit some of it), how smooth it is on the draw, etc. Make sure you go to a shop that offers great QUALITY service.

OKChunter,Are you very close to Shawnee, Ok. I'm from Stillwater, and I travel down to Tabe's Archery Shop in Shawnee. They are very friendly and they do not mind helping you out at all. They actually gave me discounts because i drove from Stillwater to buy stuff at their shop.

I shoot a PSE Bruin I picked up at outdoor outfitters. I think the package deal was priced at $320.00. It did me well this past season. Its not as nice as the Hoyt I was looking at, but then the Hoyt was nearly $800 for the bow.Im happy with my PSE. Dont forget you will also have to pick up a release and some arrows, they can get a bit expensive. If you want to shoot my bow just send me a pm and we can meet up this weekend.

I was thinking PSE that's what my brother hunts with and he likes his. Being a student getting a complete setup for around $400 or lessis critical. davs2601 how's Outdoor Outfitters archery department? Do they have an indoor bow range? If they have all that I may just drop by on Friday and see what they have and talk to them and shoot some bows. Now shoot what draw weight and length I need so that will have to be measured I am sure.

Fred Bear and Reflex both make good bows for the money. Someone mentioned the bowtech tomkat, which could be a good choice, as well. You also may want to ask your dealer if he still has some models left on the shelf from last year that would have a discounted price. My guess is most of those deals would be gone by now, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Also when you are figuring price, don't forget to consider the cost of accessories such as rest, sight, release, arrows, etc... because you will end up paying a lot more than just the price of the bow to get properly set up.

I think they still have the bruin marked down at outdoor outfitters. They only have a 20 yard lane behind the counter. The guys in the archery department are easy to deal with. They got me set up easily with draw weight and length. I shoot at 58 lbs, its not about how much you can pull back its about how much you can pull back easily and quietly. If you go try to get there early in the morning when there isnt a crowd. Good luck on your new bow purchase.

Good deal I will go looking tomorrow. If I find something I can afford and like I will be coming home with a new bow..:) Then I just have to get some targets and a couple hay bails for the back yard and I'l be all et to practice. They open up at 10am I think so I will drop buy after taking the kids to school.

Anyone familiar with the Bowtech bows that Sportsmans Warehouse sells with their label on it? I think it's called a Bowtech Vital Shock, well I am 100% sure on the Bowtech Vital part but not sure ont he shock part. Anyways just curious as the local Sportmans Warehouse has em onsale atm for the next two days. Can pick one up on a complete package for right at $400. I know it's better then the PSE bows around that price range but want to make sure it's a solid deal. Salesman says that they are made by Nowtech specifically for Sportsmans Warehouse.

I would take a look at Reflex. They really are great bows for the money. I shoot a Highlander and absolutely love it. I think I paid about $300 for it. Best $300 I ever spent. I shot bows that were $500 more than this bow and they all felt the same to me. I bought the bow and in 2 weeks I had shot 2 deer with it. My buddy shoots an Excursion which is a little cheaper than my bow but he really likes. Just last week he shot a rabbit with it at 30 yards so accuracy isn't an issue with these bows. There smooth, fast, andI got to tell you I fell no shock when shooting it. Best bang for the buck IMO.

There are so many great bows out there. But for your price range, I would definately take a good look at Reflex who make some maginificent bows, Fred Bear has a few great bows out. Also don't forget about Diamond, which is made by bowtech, they also make one heck of a bow for the money. Those are just a few names for ya, but definatley make sure that you get to shoot as many models as possible, and choose the one that you feel most comfortable with. Take the time to shoot a lot of bows, you've got plenty of time til' bow season.[8D]

Problem I am having is drawing anything over 50# draw weight hurts my left shoulder. I injured my left rotator cuff a few years back and it has never been the same. Sportsmans Warehouse only had 60# and 70# so I wasn't really able to try much. All the shops I went to said I'd probably be ok with some practice and be able to build up the muscle but I am leary of investing that much cash and then end up right where I am or going with a 50# bow and finding out over time all is well and i need a 60# or so bow. Then again I don't want to try and over do it and end up hurting the shoulder again.

The ones I looked at today were package deals that came with everything but the release and arrows and the Bowtech at Sportsmans was the best feeling and best deal at $405 for the whole package. I went to Bass Pro to look at the Reflex but left as their customer service sucks misserably and got tired of waiting. Outdoor Outfitters only carries one package deal and it's a PSE and only comes in 60# or 70# draw weight.

Now my draw length measured at 29" but the 60# set to 51# at a 27.5" felt fine but the guy said I wasn't pulling it back far enough. So I am a tad undecided on the best route to take at this point. Basically I am wanting a package setup for around $400. Many of the bows suggested so far for around that price are just bows and would require buying all the remaining peices.

Just take your time and keep doing what your doing. Which is research and asking folks questions. There is nothing worse than buying something that your unhappy with. Heck you got plenty of time till bow season

You can look at the Bass pro shop there in Bricktown or go to Academy sports I think there are two of them one is off of I240. PSE's are not bad bows. Actually I don't know of a bad bow just bad shooters. . I picked up a Firestorm lite at the first of the year for 299. , plus a dozen carbon force arrows. The bow was stripped and I am not much on packaged deals. I would rather have accessories I am comfortable with.
