Urban deer

I work at the University of Dallas in Irving Texas. It is across the street from Texas Stadium where the Cowboys play. The University owns several hundred acres of woods along the Trinity river bottom. This afternoon I saw a doe out there. I was pretty surprised. In the background I could see the Dallas skyline. I had no idea the place held deer. I have seen yotes and other wildlife in the past. I just didn't think deer would be in an area this urban. I was not 1 mile from Texas Stadium. I also found out that as an employee of the University I have permission to "utilize" the land for recreational purposes. I can bow hunt there. I wonder if this was a resident deer or a transient. I'll be doing some scouting here real soon to try and find out!

several hundred acres huh?? betcha theres alot more deer in there than that one! hunting urban deer is a bit diffrent than the big woods..but can be some good hunting. i hunt a small couple acre apple orchard. one morning watching 2 young bucks eat apples i could hear people leaving for work across the valley behind me..and the maniciple maintnece guys were loading up the truck with tools from their shed 200yds up the valley on the other side. the deer didnt care at all. just munchin away at apples..then a squirrel started barking at me..seen me trying to unfog my binocs...deer looked around...couldnt figure out what the squirrel was barking at but smartly snuck back into the thicket. i got lots of urban spots. sometimes i hate listening to traffic and trains and kids playing off in the distance etc...but it can be good at times. one of my favorite spots i can see the turnpike from my tree. man that thing is NOISY. funny when you got deer infront of you or a gobbler coming in how you dont hear it anymore lol. my biggest fear is hitting a deer with the bow and it making it to someones yard or something. i just dont want to have someone that doesnt hunt have to see me knock on their door to ask if i could go in their backyard and retrieve my deer laying under little johnys swing set or something..most my spots im far enough from houses etc to not to have that happen..but anythings possible with a hit deer...

I hate to admit it but I've wounded a few deer in the suburbs and none of them turned up in a yard. They usually head for cover.

Man, I've hunted deer on the trinity not too far from there and there were some MONSTERS. I think you'll be pleasantly suprised with what you find. Is it all around that lagoon that's out there?

I've shot quite a few deer in these tight urban areas andthey all stayed within the woods after the shot. I'm able to count 7 houses from one of my set ups.[:@]

I only hunt urban areas. Sometimes right out of the kids playset. You see more deer but shotscan bedifficult.

I was told there wasn't a single deer in Dallas. I've looked everytime there but never saw one. I'm glad to hear they were wrong. Maybe I'll bring my bow next time.

I have stand sites that I can't see anything but woods all around me. I have a spot that I'm able to see a couple houses.....and one that I can see 3-4. If I hunt on Friday evenings.....I can hear the HS football game announcer call the entire game (it's 1.7mi. from my home).

There's also 700 acres of woods and old farms that these deer have access to, behind me. I only hunt 60 acres or so. I'd say wait until later in the year.....up to season to start scouting. The deer I hunt are nowhere to be be found, right now. They're keeping a VERY low profile, right now.

Mauser:

Of the deer I shot, this year......NONE headed towards civilization. 2 dropped in their tracks......1 went 10 yds......and the other 2 headed towards deeper cover. This apect concerns me, too.....but until it happens....I'm not going to lose sleep over it (i.e. deer running towards homes).

I hunt about 250 yards behind my house and i live beside the HS. On my scouting camera i have two young 4 points and a small 9. Im hoping I can shoot him this year. But u should be careful and scout the place a little because when i went scouting i found out i wasnt the only one hunting the deer. Just like a few said before you will be suprised at what you find.

I hunt several suburban spots just west of chicago, I like the fact the funnels are so tight. I have a spot where I shot three deer....1buck, 2does within 5 minutes...They actually can only cross the road in one spot. Where the fence breaks!I sit on the other side and watch them cross the road right into my lane....Gaurnteed deer every year. I'm only 20 feet from a very busy road...I can tell there are deer coming when the cars slow down! It's AWESOME

Tell us how the scouting goes. Those urban deer are supposed to be a great challenge.

I hunt 10 yrds from houses sometime. You have to be descrete before you go tracking down the deer because yes you might see little johnny or susie. Just because your allowed to hunt there isn't any reason to freak out the neighbors. In fact, one of the letters seaking permission to hunt neighborhoods states we will be decrete and if you don't want your neighbor to know then they won't.

I hunted about 100 yards behind my house. I never thaught about the deer going into someone yard. I live on a hill and the deer usualy run down into the hollow.

It is really fascinating to hear about how different people hunt, and the environment they hunt in.

I live on 6 acres, with about 4 acres forested, and frequently have deer in my yard. In fact my dauschunds love to bark at them to get them out of our flowerbeds.

However, I won't hunt there. I go to publicly accessible land to hunt.

On several occasions, I have returned from a hunt to find deer bedded in my field less than 20 yds from my front deck.

Obviously, having immediate access to publicly accessible land influences how and where I hunt, but I don't think I would enjoy shooting a deer from my front deck, orfroma small hunting area surrounded by houses in an urban setting. I guess I'm spoiled by the abundance of choices that areavailable tome.

RE: Urban deer

I grew up hunting in Westchester County NY, every deer there is a part of neighborhood and they don't live very far from cities, major highways and homes. (Few years back one was killed on I-95 in the Bronx). There are some hidden monsters in there that just get used to the people being around. I find them to be harder in some ways to kill than when I head to Canada or the mid-West. The travel for 30 minutes after daylight and 30 minuets before sundown. Its not easy. They also know exactly where people are supposed to be, so when you cross their line, they are gone....
