For you tree step users.

I make and use my own climbing sticks, usually 4 sections of 5ft to a stand but there is the odd time i would like to get a couple feet higher or some places i do not feel like lugging in my sticks so i bought a few tree steps the other day.I waswondering about how many steps from the ground up to say 20 feet would i need? I have never used them b4. I realize it depends on how far you want to space them etc, but lets just have an average. thanxs.

On a tree with no existing branches?
8 - 10 depending on how far you space them. I like to have them about a foot and a half to two feet apart. Anything more than that and they get hard to climb wearing bulky, cold weather clothes.
If you're hunting pines with thick [live] branches that you feel comfortable putting your full weight on, maybe only 2 or 3 at the very bottom.

I generally use about 7 to get up the tree and a couple extra at the top to make it easy to get in the stand. Also something that helps me space them is that I put one in the bottom a little higher than the knee and then one at about chest level. Then each time you take a step up place one about chest level and your stride/spacing should be about perfect. Also, don't be afraid to place them closer together because when it gets cold and you have all your gear on, it's tougher to make long steps.

9 times out 10 here stands are hung on poplar straight up and 50 feet. We are a bit unfortunate because we have no oaks or anything really that will hide you that well. Depending on the area there may be a few spruce around however none where you need them to be usually it seems.
