need to find a bow for my wife

I've been bow hunting for a while now and this year I took my wife on my first archery elk hunt. She loved it and now she wants to try (I know, I'm a very lucky man). Can anybody recommend a good place for me to start looking for a bow that she could learn to shoot that would generate enough energy to take an elk-sized game animal. I'd say she has average strength for a women (5'7", 130 lbs). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

RE: need to find a bow for my wife

My wife and I have talked about her going hunting with me next year also. She is about 5'6", 160 lbs. She has a weak right shoulder so I'm thinking about getting her a crossbow instead of a compound. That way she doesn't have to hold it at tension so long. I know you can kill a deer with a 45 - 50 lb bow, I would think an elk would take more than that. You might consider the crossbow option if it's legal in your state. It would be easier on her in my opinion. Barnett and horton make the best crossbows on the market. If you're going with the compound option, Hoyt SierraTec, or PSE Team Fitzgerald might be your best options. The PSE is a package deal for around $200.00. It's light, compact, and easy to draw. The Hoyt is specially designed for women and younger shooters. You can check out their webpage.

KEEP IT LEGAL. KEEP IT SAFE. OR WE MAY NOT GET TO KEEP IT AT ALL.

Go to your local Bowtech dealer and have them show her the Bowtech Stalker,or Stalker Light, its a very fast bow for the low poundage and shorter draw lengths that most smaller framed shooters need.Good luck.

I also recommend the Bowtech. My wife is shooting the Stalker lite and she loves it. She is using it for her first hunting season.I'll be buying another one for her for the 3d shoots. But whatever bow she buys it's great when your spouse wants to get involved with hunting with you. I agree the PSE is a good choice. Bought my wife the Spyder. Even if your after elk, if you place your shot correctly in the vitals, it is going down. My boss has taken elk, prong horn, mule deer, pigs, whitetails with the same bow. He shoots about 60 lbs and has an older basic bow.

I agree with the other guys on the Bowtech, they are top of the line bows. I would have to suggest the ESD(Extreme Short Draw) by Bowtech, it's made especially for people with shorter draw lengths. My girlfriend shoots one and loves it. There are also at least 3 other women that frequent my pro shop and shoot the ESD. One of these women just killed a 175lb. pig with it. Hope this helps.

I know this is about 3 months after the fact. Just wanted to say thanks for the suggestions and let everyone know that I went with the new BowTech LadyHawk. Its new for 2003 and didn' t ship until the first part of March or end of February but she loves it. She' s driving tacks at 20 yds and shooting a 4 inch group at 30. We' re about to swap limbs out to get her draw wt over 40 lbs. Its been great sharing one obsession of mine with another obsession of mine:D
