RE: Question, hunting near roads or hwys??
A lot of big deer come of the side of highways and public roads. As a matter of fact my buddy shot a 6 last year 20 feet from a road witha bow.

RE: Question, hunting near roads or hwys??
About 10+ years ago, an acquaitance was bowhunting around Iowa City. He had been seeinga huge buck and placed some stands. One day, it was raining and the buck sneaks in on him. He draws back and lets an arrow fly. It hits the buck, who in turn runs for Interstate 80.
The buck was side swiped by one car, then hit by another. The first guy who hit it didn't want to claim it, the second guy claimed it. Against all odds, the guy in the second car was a friend of the bowhunter! I saw them taking the rack into a deer show where it scored 186 and change. The broadhead had lodged in the spine but did not inflict a mortal wound. I don't know which one has the rack..... As to legality, I don't feel the hunter is liable as he would not have been in "possession" of the deer andthus itis anybody's deer. |

What if the deer was crossing the road and your arrow fell out of the deer and punctured the cars tires thenthe car rolls over three and one half times and explodes. :Dnevermind, I picked up the arrow!

RE: Question, hunting near roads or hwys??
Wow, this has happened to people here or they know someone that it happened to. I had a feeling that someone on a forum of this size would or could relate to this scenario. It is only to get more common with all of this urban hunting and our timbers being lost to housing developments. Now who is on too much meds or seeing spotted owls ,guys?[8D]It would be great if the state DNR's just put it right into law and the regs that a hunter isn't responsible for a deer or other animal once it is shot if it comes in contact with someones vehicle, personal property,or if some kid in a backyd would find such an animal alive and get hurt by coming in contact with the injured animal. Laws need to be put in the DNR regs that hold no hunter responsible for the action of a legally shot animal, if these lawsaren't already on the books.

If a woman can buy hot coffee and spill it on here self while trying to drive and hold it with here legs and then sue. I’m afraid what a jury would do to you if your deer ran in front of a car!

ORIGINAL: Germ If the car broke my rack I am going to hold him or herliable[:@] I can tell you every deer I shot runs for cover, not much cover on a road;) |
RE: Question, hunting near roads or hwys??
ORIGINAL: hardcorehunter LOL GregH. I know what you are saying; it is your arrow in it though. Act of God doesn't include human launched arrows does it? Shot or not... it would be tough to prove that you caused the deer to run into the road by shooting it. Just a plain old accident. |
RE: Question, hunting near roads or hwys??
ORIGINAL: dws I would probably watch to see if the driver was okay, then I would haul arse out of there before the cops show up. Now LT, I usually don't let the arrow fly, unless the deer is pointed toward my truck..[8D] I did though shoot one that took off straight to my truck....those are the drags I like! |

RE: Question, hunting near roads or hwys??
In 1997 while bowhunting in Norfthern Michigan I shot a decent 8 point just 40 yards from I-75. As the arrow passed through the deer he spun around and made a bee-line for the expressway. One simple bound had him over the fence and two more leaps had him square in front of a family in an suv. The driver hit the deer, killing it immediately and doing some major damage to his vehicle. Because I was hunting legally and had not intentionally pushed the deer onto the road I was not at fault. It is not that the driver wanted to hold me responisble. In fact they thought it was kind of crazy and that they would have a story to tell through the years that would probably be a one of a kind tale.
