RE: delayed gratification

Soldier,

Just for you I'm going to shoot every spikehorn I see next year [8D].

I got both of these bucks this year. The big one was from Illinois. The small one was the only buck I saw all year in Michigan - and I hunted at least 15 times here. The problem is there is alot of hunting pressure around here and alot of poaching. It's pretty much "brown it's down" around here.

I'm more prould of the little one than I am of the big one because of how it happened and the story behind it. And the meat from young deer is SO much tastier.

WOW, i believe with kids especialy or any new hunter, that if theywere towait for a 100" buck or better they would most certainly have (delayed experience.) Hunters hunt for many reasons, meat , Trophy bucks, enjoyment of being out there or whatever. It all boils down to what turns your crank and makesYOU happy and notsome OTHER guy. I have shot many small bucks over the years and enjoyed everyone of them, I have entered a different stage in my life and now only go after 100" or better. I shoot Does for meat,so doesmy 15 year old son. I watched him season himself on small bucks over the years and gain experience just like i did. He decided to wait for a bigger one this season because he was getting comfortable shooting smaller ones via experience.his fourth buck witch he got this season was a very nice 8 point probably just under 100". Do it for yourself and no one else.
Dan

Mississippi State also replicated the spike study some time later under the same conditions and got completely different results. See North American Whitetail Magazine December 2006 Volume 25 No. 8 pg. 28

I would be willing to bet that you have killed a buck smaller that 100", maybe even more deer under 100" than over just my guess from your comments.

You learn more from watching deer that you do shooting deer.

Why don't we turn this into a poll? Everyone can vote on each of the bigger arguments. Just call it delayed gratification II.

here's my thinking:
I If I see a small one..Less than 100"...I'll let him go. Hopefully he'll make it a couple more years. I realize a button this year will be a trophy when my kids start hunting. My point in this whole thread(besides starting sh*t) Is to explain if you truely understand and respect the deer you'll let them reach their potential. As far as 100" goes I'm sure that will change as i become a better hunter. I'm not a very good one
Sorry to those I've offended I'm sure theres alot.

White, your idea of herd management is way off. To setyour standard at 100" regardless of age is plain stupid. Yea, pass up the4 year old fork, kill the 2 year old bruiser. Let the sh!tty buck grow to be a BIG fork andpass his genesfor another 5 years. You're doing your herd real good, keep up the great work!

I think you need to walk a mile in my woods, soldier.

I keep trail cams up from July to Mid September. I also went on 46 hunts in my woods. In all those times......in all those trail cam photos......I harvested the largest RACKED buck in my woods on 12/9. If he goes 100".....it'll be close.

He's not the biggest BUCK, though. He's still out there.....with a rack of less than 100".

Here's my suggestion to you. Go shoot the biggest racked buck in YOUR woods....and get back with me.

See ya!
