only if hunting at night is notpermitted in your state then its unethical

RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
That's a weedy, thinning pacasandra bed under a big old maple that steals all the moisture and nutrients. The deer are well fed. I ran out of raw peanuts so tonight they got bird seed, shelled corn and red delicious apples.
|
RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
I would shot them. I mean it is not hunting but it is still a deer for meat.
|
RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
Don't do it, you may hit your car!
|
RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
We use to feed them in our yard all winter, but man they would eat the heck out of the Wifes Flower beds in the spring.
|
RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
If you plant your whole yard in deer clover, you could sell the lawn mower and never worry about mowing again[8D]
|
RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
This is one of those things that could make us(bow hunters)look bad later, if you are shooting deer after dark and it’s illegal. I hope not!
As far as ethical that's up to you. |
RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
I've been tempted by the same scenario. But I didn't do it. I just wouldn't feel right afterward.....

Only if there's snow on the ground and you're saving them from starvation.

David, i had no idea that deer would eat raw peanuts, i learn something all the time. My 100 lb. yellow lab wont let em get close to my house.

RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
Bloodcreek, deer in the South will plow up a peanut field at night digging up the peanuts. These are Yankee deer in my yard and have never seen a peanut until I started feeding them to them. I dump several small piles of corn around the yard, sprinkle a handful of raw peanuts in the shell on each pile. They devour them. I used to hide the peanuts under the corn, but they dig threw the corn and eat the peanuts first so no sense in trying that. I've never done it, but some people use peanut butter for a deer lure. THey'll eat the peanuts before they eat the apples or corn. When the peanuts are gone they'll dig into the rest.

Your own personal herd. How cool is that?Is that your NY home?
|
RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
Nope, this is Maryland. I'm heading for NY and a snow storm in the morning to check on the house.
|
RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
You probably have your own herd up there too.

There are deer, but no where the population we have here. I live in a neighborhood of 1/2 acre lots here. These deer come 1/2 mile to get to my yard.

The southern part of the state has a lot of deer. Up in the Adirondacks not so. The hard winters can really whack a herd.

RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
I know you're joking, David....but it brings up a good point (and the feed my bow shop owner sells has shlled peanuts in it 50/50....and the deer DEVOUR IT). I've got an area on my 3 acres that we had as a garden the first year we lived there. I was thinking of planting it in a food plot.....but not hunting over it. I've had people tell me I should hunt it. I've got 24 acres (ea)of uninhabited land on each side of me and 17 acres of woods, behind me. The 24 acre plot on one side is where I hunt a LOT.
How far away from your house does it have to be to be "hunting"? This ought to be interesting.....and David can slap my hand if I've hijacked. Sorry. |

RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
Hey, these things are almost like pets at this point. I'm serious, I've walked out in the dark in the morning to go hunting and walked right into a deer feeding. I was down on my hands and knees one day stuffing leaves into bags. I picked up something out of the corner of my eye and there stands a beautiful 8 point at maybe all of 10 yards. He just looks as if to say, "and what are you doing old man". I got up and walked in the house to alert my wife. We came back and the buck had traffic stopped. He was standing in the mouth of my driveway and everyone stopped to let him pass. I've walked out back with the flood lights on with deer feeding where the ones in the picture are while talking on the portable phone. The deer don't usually spook badly. They duck through the hedgerow and return as soon as I go in. I think anytime you feed them on a continual basis they become tamer and more domesticated. I guess more if they are in close contact with people daily like these. I'm sure people are slipping in and hunting these deer where they come from. It's illegal, but someone has picked up the pace on the poaching I think. It's a small very confined area with definite bottlenecks. This year the bucks have disappeared. For the past several years I've always had some really REALLY nice bucks. You've seen the pictures of them. This year, they've all disappeared. They're not coming at all. There was a drop off in bucks last year, but this year they're gone. I truly feel someone has been whacking them. Heck, it's like shooting inside a zoo these suburbia deer. I'd get no satisfaction from it. In answer to your question, I don't like baiting of any kind.

RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
One of the places I used to hunt (owner sold it at the end of this season) was planted in a rotation of corn, soybean, and peanuts. The deer LOVE peanuts, the greens and the nut. Best early season food plot there is. This place has literally hundreds of deer. The biggest problem was all the fruits and nuts that hunted all around us. Some really stupid, aggressive behaviour there.
As far as pet deer. I have deer that come into my yard and will stand there eating my apples 15 yards from me while I practice shooting my bow! ![]() ![]() But they certainly aren't tame when they are a hundred yards away in the woods. I'd shoot them out of my back yard if it were in season and I had the chance. I intend to shoot them in the woods as they come to my yard so I don't see the problem with that. I wouldn't make it a habit, or the only way I'd hunt, but I'd view an opportunityas a gift. Same as if I was driving to my hunting spot and as I leave my truck and walk into the woods I see a nice buck after only going a few yards. I'm not going to pass him because that wasn't where I thought he'd be so I didn't out-smart him, and thus I couldn't derive any pleasure from it. It seems that's the mindset of some here, which is okay for them but I'm not that way. Yeah I like to outsmart them and try and ambush them but I'm not too proud to be an opportunist too. And as far as being pets. If I killed all of the deer that came in my yard, more would come. It's not like I need to have that SPECIFIC deer in my yard during the off season. It's neat, and fun to watch, but it seems hypocritical to say I won't shoot them because they are in the yard instead of 150 yards away in the woods. |
RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
I'm sure people are slipping in and hunting these deer where they come from. Heck, it's like shooting inside a zoo these suburbia deer. I hunt parcels that are: 24 acres 24 acres 4 acres 5 acres 10 acres 2.3 acres 1.1 acres 15 acres 64 acres |
RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
Hunting in the suburbs is just that, hunting very close to homes. I hunt a 6 acre parcel that is unincorporated (hunting allowed) surrounded by homes w/1acre lots Hunting illegal. I've got no problem sitting on the 6-acre parcel. Sometimes I see deer more often not. These deer travel great distances and with everyon'es yard having some tasty goodies to snack on there are no predictable and set patterns,as long as someone isn't feeding them(i.e.peanuts). These suburban herds do a lot of damage to landscaping and also need to be thinned. You're actually doing a service hunting them and reducing their numbers. BTW, automobile/deer collisions are up here in Lake co. Il.Yet another reason to whack 'em close to home/\

RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
When I said suburbian deer I should have said city deer. My neighborhood is a Baltimore/Wash burb with half acre house lots, etc etc. It's city living. I've walked through the woods they hang out in. You can walk through there at a casual walk and get within bow range of deer on any given day.I can guarantee anyone at anytime I can show them 20 deer within 5 minutes and some will be within bow range. Hardly what I'd call a tough hunt. Besides, it's illegal to hunt there.

RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
Well Dave let me put it this way ... if you feel they are trespassing and you don't want them there , then go ahead and shoot those dog gone violators :D
|
RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
I know you weren't talking about me, Dave.....but some people here want to think I'm shooting fish in a barrell.
I walked through the parks system on the day after deer season closed (12/17). I also walked through there, again, this past Sunday. The "park" is an old farm that has about 5 acres cleared with a walking track.....and a fish pond. The other +/- 195 acres is wooded....uncleared....no trails....nothing. It IS an old farm. They just don't allow hunting, there. It's a GREAT sanctuary....and people around my parts are MORE marveled by the fact that I have permission from the adacent landowners than anything. I've gained permission from people that everyone here told me would NOT let me hunt their property. I've been amazed, myself. My in-laws have lived in this area for a LONG time.....and all of my neighbors are retirement aged. My father in law being a good man has opened doors for me. I know if my son plays HIS cards right.....he'll have an AWESOME place to hunt the rest of his life. Just wanting to ask how close to home is "hunting". I typically walk to my stands......and 4 out of the 5 I took this year were within 1/2 mi. of my door. I took my piebald in a 5 acre woodlot across the street from my home. Lisa and I will have a gravity feeder up in the yard by this weekend. No. I won't hunt my yard....lol. (disclaimer.....unless he's a BIGGUN!!!...lol). I did have a treestand (that I hunted, once) at the bottom of my hill I live on......about 40 yds off my driveway.....where the deer were crossing to get to an area I can't hunt. The rut they were making (trail) was deep!.....and well used. It's also where I have seen 3 deer run over in the past year. |
RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
If you wanting the meat go for it i would
|
RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
I thought it was monkeys in a barrell. City deer, Big woods deer, its all hunting. I have helped thin out some city deer heards. Its a necessary task but not much of a challenge. If a person is lucky enough to have deer in their back yard thanI see no reason to not hunt them. As long as it's legal.

RE: Is it unethical......yada yada yada
i'd say if u do it make sure it isnt a little one.. an i will turn my head when u draw back..i used to do it now with bow though i get drunk an go outback an sit in the chair not to hunt but if i see one big enuff it's tempting.. well thats up to you how close it the nearest house. or car.
it's about the food if you need it then go for it. but dont do it because it's their.. i shot a few deer at night only because i needed the meat but that was with my 22-250 1 shot dont run. an you always have to worrie about it running off to if u dont have a good shot so i think that is on you. just make sure u need the meat not just to do it. thats my opinion Thanks |
