Personally, I think that proficiency test are OK if an individual/organization wants them for use of private land. However, for public huntingor issuing licenses I think this could/would turn into a debate into our individual rights.

Actually that hunter might have GREAT ethics, working very hard to get that 10 yard chip shot and never shooting anything further out.

The accuracy of the hunters doesn't impact how his ethics are, does it ?

I believe there are badshot, and there aregood shots to be taken by bowhunters.

A bad shot can end up with a dead deer, and a good shot can end up with a wounded deer.

Ethics say that bowhunters should take GOOD SHOTS ......... but do you think that maybe, the better shot an archer is, the more he pushes the limits of what is and isn't a good shot ? Maybe taking 35 yards shots because he's been practicingso good, or even further out ? Out slicing an arrow through some brush because his bow shoots so flat and accurate maybe ?

We all have our reasons why or why not. I took my 1st 34 Biggame animals with a recurve & wood/forgewood/fiberglass arrows. I now shoot compound. I still keep my shots about the same as I did when I shot recurve. In fact-my longest shot/kill has been with my recurve.
Lets just keep our BOW SEASON.
How about this instead-a TWO week EARLY bow season for DOES only. since those seem the ones we need to take out. Just ONE SPECIAL DOE only tag good for that 2 weeks only. Wisconsin has a Sept. season, why not the rest of the midwest....

Buster T, I Started out, 3 out of 5 at 25 with a foot ball size kill, I moved it in to 20 the size of a pie plate, now were down to 10 yards with good Ethics? The problem I have with that is, that person who is waiting for that 10 yard chip shot, Ethics suddenly change when a nice buck presents its self at 25 yards. Like I said, I wish there was a simple test for Ethics! Lets take theLegendin his own mind, blabber mouth Tred Barta, who is a self appointed Ambassador on ethics, one minute hes preaching Ethics and saying his effective shooting range is around 20 yards, the next minute he's flicking slivers 60 yards at Deer!And I know there are Good shots that take bad shots, and bad shots that take good shots. But I also know that there are just as many, if not more, Good shots thattake good shots,and bad shots that takebad shots! Thats why I said, a good and a bad shot with the same skill level as a bowhunter! Like I said, Bad shots being better Bowhunters, thangood shooters is a mith, made up by bad shots. Now I don't want to be misleading, I Shoot both! I Love my Recurves, I have 7 of them. I love the bow of the limbs at full draw, the curves, the wood, dipping cresting and fletching my own arrows, and sharpening my broadheads. I don't feel holier than thou for shooting one , Nor do I feelI'm at such a disadvantage, I deserve a SPECIAL season for it!!! That being said I will end with something I wrote on my Recurve Bow Case Years ago, Just because I choose to shoot TRAD, is no excuse for me to shoot BAD!!!

Sliverflicker I think we agree then that a target shoot to prove you can shoot a target at a set distance under ideal conditions is a worthless test isn't it ?

An IDEAL bowhunters test ? You sit in 25 mph winds on a misty/rainy 34 degree day, and 4 hours after climing into your uncomfrtable hangon you have a two pop-up decoys at an unknown 20-25 yards distance pop up for,say 12 seconds, one behind some brush, frontal shot, a 200 " main framed monster ......... and if he takes the shot he don't get to hunt. :eek:

Inside 20 yards a good recurve shooter will out kill a good compound shootereverytime in that a recurve is a moreeasily shot in quick situations, and in tight quarters.

The compound is a better target weapon, than it is a hunting weapon. It is only perceived as better because 90% of folks shoot them.

However, I do agree that all archer must know their limits. A recurve becomes less effective as yardage increases, but so does the compound. In fact, without a range finder most compounders are only slightly more accurate than recurvers. In fact, I have taken shots out to almost 40 yards with a recurve, that I would never take with a compound because of distance issues.

I agree that recurve shooters should be able to hold 6" groups at 20 yards, and I also agree that compound hunters should be able to hunt without range finders.
