Okay, i had a gander mountain gift card from last Xmas,so i figured id use it and buy myself one of those new primos buck roars since i heard that they worked better than the buck growl. Now i have a couple questions about it.
For one, it doesnt sound like the "roar" or as i say the "grown" that they show on the vidio. It just sounds like a deeper grunt. So what are your thoughtson this? I cant understand how this could be any more effective than just a regular grunt.
Also, it comes with a "snort-wheeze" call. Is just blowing through a tube really going to have any effect on the deer?It sounds to me like it would just scare one away. I actually blew through a straw and it sounded like the call. Now ive seen just the "snort-wheeze" at dunhams for $10. Are they really selling you a $10 hollow tube, or is the one attatched to the buck-roar just a basic call?
thanks in advance for your answers

I buy a lot of calls because they are inexpensive and I like to mess around with them. I have both the Buck Roar and the Buck Growl (I was bored after tagging out early this season). Anyway, the buck roar and growl have more to do with the cadence and length of the call than anything else. They are also louder and more gutteral, and to get that sound you have to blow the call a bit harder. If you try that with a regular grunt call it sounds "ducky" because the call isn't designed to be blown that hard.
As for the snort wheeze, yes the call is just a tube that you snort wheeze through. If you don't get it with another call it is not worth buying. You can get the same effect by cupping your hand and making the sound with that.
IMO the Buck Growl sounds better than the Buck Roar, and it has a much better DVD. The included DVD shows deer making the call very well and lets you see what sound you should be imitating. Both are good calls though.

A couple buddies and I bought the growl this fall and had good success with them. It was a good year, the bucks were very callable. For about 2 weeks strait, every buck I called to came in. I didn't growl with it I just grunted.

A bunch of friends bought this call last fall. I wish I had the photos of the bucks they killed as I was impressed enough to buy the call myself. One friend growled at a buck that was 200 yards out (after a quick rattle sequence) and the buck came in on a rope, roaring back all the way. An arrow at 30 yards finished the job on a 7 year old 10 point.
I'm usually not the band wagon jumping gadget guy, but that call works. I called in a couple of bucks first time out with it.
One word of caution, with the "growl" call, you might scare off young bucks.

I've still never heard a buck "roar".....so, for ME....it's out of the question. I'm serously thinking my deer would be thinking "yeah...right" if they heard a "roar" call.
I think my deer are metrosexual.
