Greg, my son killed an 8-point this season and it also had a hole on the beam in about the same spot as yours. I have been wondering what causes this also.

nohillbilly, it is a hole. They are kind of common on older bucks. Probably because there is more mass for a hole to develope in. I have a few with this. The location of the holes mostly occur in this location on the beam.

I'm not sure of the cause, but I've heard that it is either an injury while in velvet or where a bloodvessel dried up.Maybe someone on here can tell us???

Thanks for responding Greg. The only one with a hole I've ever seen is the "Hole in the Horn" buck at Cabelas. I think the fact that here in the Northern Panhandle of WV the bucks rarely live to see old age might have something to do with it.

If I'm not mistaken the hole forms when the deer is in velvet and a bug will bore into the soft horn for the blood and once the horn hardens it leaves the hole.
