Default ground hunting...

just wandering, does anyone hunt just be sitting or walking on the ground. Or does almost every1 sit in a treestand. I mean i am hunting some public land and taking a treestand everytime in and out is going to be annoying (especially b/c i have a broken foot). Does any1 have alot of success by just sitting on a log or taking some foldable chairs? Thanks alot

I have killed 4 deer with my bow and 2 of those have been off the ground. First one I was walking to my stand and the second I stalked. What I do like to do is after I get down from my stand in the mornings. I like to slip around and check out the food plots to see if there are any deer feeding in them and then I try a stalk.

i have taken 1 buck with a bow in 3 years of archery hunting. it was on the ground. i have spent a lot of time both in stands and on the ground, and although i prefer to be in a tree stand for the visibility... sometimes the ground is the only choice. i have found that taking a saw and pruning shears is very helpful for making a quick make-shift blind... i shot a buck at 9 yards as he came in to rattling...bottom line is that i think it is mostly about confidence in your choice of spots and your ability to be patient.

good luck

I have only taken deer off the ground. I use a folding chair and make a little brush blind or sit in front of a fallen tree/brush. It works very well. You just have to watch your movement. I really would like to shoot my first deer from the treestand though. I just got one for this season. I shot a coyote out of it but no deer yet.

I shot my first deer (buck) with a bow last year from my folding chair sitting on a rockedge about 15 feet up. I called him in for a straight down shot. I like to use terrain where possible to help. I don't have a stand either but hope to get one soon.

I started out hunting from the ground, much of the time still hunting. Still hunting is not easy.. and I scared off many more deer than I got a shot at. I mostly hunt public land, and most of the time I use my climbing stand. With a gunI prefer to get as high as possible. I got a buck this year from about 45 feet up. Of course with a bow I dont go as high because of the angle of the shot. Basically, the higher you are the more movement you can get away with. Also even if they smell you they might think you are farther away and might come right under you.
That being said, there is a spot I plan to hunt from a hillside.. so I am going to set up a natural blind.

I hunt on the ground about 98 % of the time. I've had alot of luck this way. I have a small fold up stool with a carrying strap that I use. I go in and find a couple trees close together or a brush pile, tree top, etc and sit in or next to. You need to keep the wind good or your wasting your time. This year I went to Kansas and hunted public ground and killed a 130 8 pt 40 yards from a road and yes I was on the ground. He makes the fifth P&Y buck in the last 6 yrs for me and they all were killed off the ground. Also, a small pair of pruning clippers are a must. good luck

I hunt primarily from the ground, it takes awhile to get the hang of it with a bow, hell I been doing it for years and still learn something new about every time out.Ive killed probably 20+ deer from ground level since I started bowhunting.Lotta disadvantages to ground hunting but its sure intense when everything comes together and you take a deer standinga few yards from you
