How close is too close?
My neighbor has a ladder stand out behind his house on state land. I don't know how often he hunts it but it's a really good area. I found a spot about 75-100 yrds away that I was going to put a stand up. Do you think that's too close?

RE: How close is too close?
Well, how good of friends are you with your neighbor? Theres no law against putting a stand too close to another person's stand (that I know ) but it may piss some people off.
Can you see his stand from where you would put yours? Would walking to your stand interrupt his hunting? I would take these in consideration. Or, maybe you could just ask him. Some people don't fret over things like this. Good luck! |
RE: How close is too close?
I myself would get a little mad. I will not allow anyone to sit within 300 yards of any of my stands. I know it sounds like I am a jerk but if a person starts spooking deer 75 to 100 yards from my stand it will have some effect on my hunting. I know on public land spots are hard to come by but I think that may be to close. Talk to him and see if he minds. Jst my opinion.

That's too close for me. 200-300 yards is fine. I would ask him when he hunts there and the days he's not there, go ahead and set up where you want.

RE: How close is too close?
Yes thats to close. Put yourself in his shoes. He found that spot and like you said it's a good area. Plus it's behind his house so it is also it works out good for him. Would you like someone to come into the area and put a stand up 75 yards away if you were him??? I think not.
Not to be a jerk but just find your own area. Nothing bothers me more than finding a good spot and putting the time in puting a stand up and having some one come in and cramp your style. |
RE: How close is too close?
Yea .. Iwould think 75 or 100 yards is to close , the area I hunt is public land and six other archery hunters hunt it too.
We get along and know each other and we respect each othershunting area , with almost 500 acres to hunt we don't have a problem having a 200 to 300 yard radius for each one of us. |
RE: How close is too close?
You may be hunting the same deer at that range. However, there would be a number of occasions where one of you may get a shot and the other would not. Perhaps, if you are concerned about it, you should error on the side of caution.

RE: How close is too close?
I would ask him. If it was me I wouln't mind. Me and a couple of my buddies hunt close together on a regular basis. There have been times when deer got past one hunter but came right to me and vise versa.

RE: How close is too close?
I should mention this spot is also directly behind my house, and technically you're not supposed to leave stands out overnight on public land anyway. It's also so thick it's almost like jungle. There is no way we could seeeach other. Normally I would just hunt somewhere else but I feel I have as much right as he does and it borders our community where there is no hunting. This spot can only be accessed if you live at either my house or his. I've know it was a good spot since I've moved in a 2 yrs ago and have never hunted back there just because I do respect other hunters. I'll have to talk to him if not I'll head the other direction and see if I can find something better that won't mess him up. Thanks for the advice.

I would also ask him. If it were the case where you could just try to call him to see if he was gaoing out that day, then you might stay out of your stand. But if he isn't going hunting that day then tell him you are going to sit in that stand.

RE: How close is too close?
well u will be putting ur stand behind ur house to right? i dont see any harm in that ask him what days he hunt an what days he dont hunt an pick the days he dont hunt if he minds u hunting that close or if he dont mind just caddy corner your stand to the left or right an u can pic deer moving the other way if he dont see them me an my buddies sometimes hunt that close but i sit facing north an my buddie sits facing south so i we pick up alot of deer that way but i mean just ask him how he feels with you hunting to you know

RE: How close is too close?
Talk toyour friend. When I hunt with one friend we are usually 100-150 yrds away. You might find away that is in both your favor.
|
RE: How close is too close?
If both of you are hunting right out from your backyards I don't see a problem with it. maybe just go as far away as you can on the end of your property. If he can not see you, nor here you then I don't think it is a problem.

RE: How close is too close?
Hek if someone put a stand by mine i'd cut it down. I'd be really mad. But that's just the way i am. If i were you though i'd ask him when he's gonna be hunting and if you can hunt near him. Just my thought. Thats wat i do to my neighbors and they dont seem to mind.

RE: How close is too close?
It's too close under most circumstances. That being said, it is state land. A guy can't walk in and throw up a bunch of stands claiming the land for his own. If he's not there, it's state land and I'd hunt where I want. Realize of course, if he hunts it a lot you're probably peeing into the wind anyway as the spot is buggered up more than likely. What are the state laws about errecting and leaving stands in place? 75 yards is too close, 100 with a bow is probably not in most cases. Depends on the woods and the vegetation. My gut feeling though is.... It's state land, not his to control when he's not there. I just read one of your later post. It's illegal to leave stands in the woods. Hunt where you want. The guy can't claim State Land for himself. And some of you that state you won't tolerate anyone within 300-400 yards of your stands, now that's a stretch in anyones woods. 440 yards is a quarter of a mile. Unless you own it or have club rules you're being a bit pushy and asking taking in too much territory for your very own. With one stand you claim 1/2 mile square block. I don't think so. NOt in my woods or state land or any club I've ever been in, and we'd tell you so.

RE: How close is too close?
Every year we go to northern WI for a late season hunt. we set up about 100 yards from eachother and all see deer. 2 out of 3 peoiple have gotten shots at deer within 1/2 hour. I dont think it's too close. Talk to him and see.
