How did you....
How did you learn about bowhunting? What/Who got you into it?
|
RE: How did you....
Honestly, I cant really remember, I just know it had something to do with my neighbors and a hunting show that I saw, get this, on PBS.
Once I shot a bow one time, I was hooked... |
RE: How did you....
My Dad was a game warden in Preble County Ohio. He, my uncle, and Grandpa were avid bird hunters. I was born on a State owned hunting preserve ('Rush Run' is the name of the preserve. It's still there.) We raised pheasants and deer for release in Ohio. Oh....and we fished a lot too :) I got into bow hunting and turkey hunting after meeting up with the likes of Pat Ely, CougMag, Ed Owens, and a few other knuckleheads from here.

RE: How did you....
I struck out on my own. That was a great failure and I gave it up.
About 4 years ago my father-in-law got me shooting my bow again and I actually got good with it (on targets). Then I got my first deer with a bow. Been hooked ever since. I still enjoy black powder hunting, but the rifles/shotguns have been given a great rest. |
RE: How did you....
A couple of good friends sparked my intrest and when I got my first bow they taught me everything.
One taught me everything thing about my bow and the other taught me everything about hunting whitetails. |
RE: How did you....
Wanted more of a challenge, along with more time in the bush. So I started out onmy own, with no real "Bow" knowledge but plenty of hunting knowledge. The transition was pretty easy.

RE: How did you....
Google search.:D
Actually bought myself a bear fiberglass bow in the late 70s and started shooting. Taught myself, and moved on from their. |
RE: How did you....
I had an old bow for many years and decided I should start shooting it.
I got it set up and plinked around in the backyard to find that I was a pretty good shot. My best friend had recently gotten a used bow so we headed out together to learn. He had prior shotgun hunting experience from his family and I had navigation/map reading experience from the Army so it was a great matchup. We taught each other a lot in a short amount of time and have been going strong ever since! |
RE: How did you....
My dad was an avid bowhunter before I was born. I was in the stand with him long before I could hunt. He had a climbing stand and he would tie a rope around my waist, climb up, and then pull me up after him. We never saw much back then as the deer population wasn't near what it is now, but it was one of the best parts of my life. Been hunting with him ever since. My son is 11 months now, but I can't wait to get him in the stand with me in the early season.

RE: How did you....
My grandpa started bowhunting in the 60's. Then my dad and my uncles started hunting as soon as they could. So it has just been passed on I guess.

RE: How did you....
It's all about family for me.
|
RE: How did you....
I'm self taught.
|
RE: How did you....
I got myself into it. My step dad introduced me to hunting, but to this day I've NEVER been deer hunting w/ him, let alone bow hunting. Everything I know is self taught, either by books and magazines or videos. I started just "hanging" out at the archery shop a few years ago and began learning quite a bit. Amazingly, I've learned a TON on this site, and 6 months ago began working at the shop. I am really beginning to learn alot, and fast. I just love it.
Someday, someday, I'm gonna open a shop of my own. I have some college credits I gotta get out of the way first... |
RE: How did you....
I shot my friends bow about 4 years ago and I have been hooked ever since. First I was just shooting targets and such and had never been hunting. I am and always will be a hardcore fisherman at heart. It is my first passion. Well I got into bowhunting and am totally consumed by it. I'm just glad that hunting and fishing are different seasons.:D

RE: How did you....
My dad gun hunted and I guess that planted the seed.
|
RE: How did you....
I had a bow to mess with since I was a kid, but when it came time for hunting with one, it was just "go out and do it." Man have I learned a lot since then.

RE: How did you....
I was always hanging around with my uncles and they are the ones that got me into it! Now there ain't no turning back!!

RE: How did you....
I wanted a challenge and I like to tinker with things so I got into bow-hunting. It’s a challenge for me to have the patience to wait for the deer to get into the kill-zone and have the confidence to take the shot. I can practice in my back yard with my bow and not disturb the neighbors, they frown on me firing my smoke pole in the neighborhood, too much noise and there’s that safety thing. Plus I can tinker with different fletchings (blazers, feathers and so on), even shoot in my basement, try that with a gun.

RE: How did you....
I moved into our present home 14 years ago. The next year was the great flood of 1993. I live about 1 mile from the Missouri River and you wouldn't believe the deer that got pushed off the islands and flood plain into the surrounding area. Gun hunting was not an option so I started asking people if I could bow hunt and got permission to hunt a few properties. Then I read mags. and watched videos and visited archery shops and taught myself.

RE: How did you....
i got involved because i filled my rifle tag within 15 minutes of the opening day start. my wife asked me what i planned on doing the rest of the winter and i was devastated!!! i went to my local archery shop and found some very knowledgable and helpful people that really got me started on my way. i've been bow hunting for 3 years now and got my first buck with a bow this year.... the best part was that my 10 yr old son was able to share the moment with me. we set up in a ground blind made hastily with branches and rattled the buck within 9 yards when i arrowed it through both lungs.... what an exiting moment to share with my boy. i'm hooked!

RE: How did you....
I decided to try it here after reading about it in some magazines when I was in high school. It was just to see if I could do it type of thing. Back then I didn't know of no one trying archery hunting up here. I was laughed at and tha whole bit. Now there is quite a few archery hunters up this way and some folks are really impressed how some deer are getting shot that way. I am one that stalks so my style of hunting is some what harder to do but, I enjoy it.

RE: How did you....
I would have to say my friends.
|
RE: How did you....
Don't remember how I heard about it, but I started bow hunting deer on my own and learned nearly everything the hard way - on my own.
|
RE: How did you....
Self taught, when I started it was all about a 3 month season vs 2 week for gun, but now I'd rather be in a tree with the bow than any other kind of hunting I've done.
I've also had some friends follow my lead. |
RE: How did you....
my friend got me into it. ive been bowhunting as long as ive been deer hunting.
|
RE: How did you....
I got into bow hunting myself....
