Help me get this land!
So I'm helping my buddy track a doe he shot the other day. 3/4 of a mile later (long story for another thread), we come to a crossroad. The deer goes onto a piece of property that we have no idea who owns. A bunch of phone calls later and 12 different doors knocked on we finally find out who owns it.
We talk to her for a bit and she gives us permission to continue (cool). We ask if anyone else is hunting there that we should know about cause I'd rather not get shot or ruin someones hunt. She says nobody has hunts those woods [:-]. I didn't want to drop the bomb then and there because we had other issues to deal with at the moment, but the thought of new land immediately popped into my noggin. So anyway we're plodding along trailing the doe. Thickets, swamps, pines, crop fields, swail, food, bed, funnels, ridges, etc..... All I can say is................. ![]() ![]() ![]() I dont' know how many deer we jumped/saw. Cant even count the rubs, beds, and scrapes. A little 400 acre piece of unhunted paradise. Sooooooo I need toput together mygameplan on how to go about aquiring this little honey hole:D[8D]. Let's hear some of your best lines to use when approaching a landowner with potential to gain permission. |
RE: Help me get this land!
Ma'am, when I was out on your land the other day I saw that some of your fences needed mending.......
|
RE: Help me get this land!
Offer something in trade and don't expect to get something for nothing. It doesn't have to be money, but maybe she would like some of the meat, or help with something around her house. Just not acting like you should be entitled to the use of her land could go a long way. I'm not saying you would act that way, I am just saying... Good luck.

RE: Help me get this land!
Old lady?? Older lonely people love company.(they love homemade pies, too)Go give her a 'thank you' for letting you track on her land. Butter her up a bit, grease the wheels if ya know what I'm sayin'(but not in that way:D)
Hey looky there, #500. and it only took over a year. |
RE: Help me get this land!
In a month or so reintroduce yourself. Thank her for the access and let her know that you were successful in finding the deer. Tell her how beautiful her land is. Say you'd like to ask ask permission to bow hunt the land in return for some type of services such as cutting grass, painting, refinishing, etc.etc. Let her know you are willing to give something back for your permission to hunt there.
|
RE: Help me get this land!
Take her to bingo night, get her all liquered up, fly her to vegas and marry her. Then turn around and divorce her and take half, or just this 400 acers;).
|
RE: Help me get this land!
Start by re-introducing yourself. Then:
Ma'am I just dropped by to tell you Thank You for allowing us to track our deer on your land. We finally found her and now she is being processed. I was curious to know if you would like some of the meat? Also I couldn't help but notice how wonderful your land looks. I was wondering if there was anything I could do for you in exchange to hunt out here some. I will only be bow hunting so you don't have to worry about me having a gun on your land. I don't want to rush your decision so I will leave you my name and number, and if you think we might can work something out please give me a call. Then before you leave tell her you look foward to hearing from her. Wait a month or so, and stop back by if need be. |

Germ:
How about the advice from Joe Brooks? It's never NOT worked, for me. It's VERY sound. Rob/PA's got my book....or I'd type it out for you. Start by getting an aerial map of the land, though. Maybe Germ'll post the rest. Jeff |
RE: Help me get this land!

Make sure it is an american car. Have a resume of your huntingto give to her. Act like it isthe job of a lifetime for you.Leave the resume and have her call you back. Like Jeff said it works! If that does not work, thenget her drunk:) |

RE: Help me get this land!
I always tell them this:
1. I am a State Certified Hunter's Ed/Safety Instructor 2. I have a $500,000.00 insurance policy. 3. A waver will be signed releasing the landowner from all responsiblity/liability. 4. I will ONLY be taking kids hunting/viewing wildlife and no other hunter will be on their land. 5. During and after the season we will have a clean up day to pick up litter on the land. 6. (Depending on the person) I offer to share or give all of the meat to the landowner. 7. No perm. stands will be put up. 8. No trees will be cut and/or damaged. |
RE: Help me get this land!
I FORGOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ALL the things Germ said plus...... 1) Go on a nice, pretty day. 2) Go to the sie door (Only people wanting to sell you something use the front door) 3) Tell her you hunt with a bow and arrow. Doesn't that sound harmless????...lol Jeff |

RE: Help me get this land!
My son has a new approach to getting access to new hunting spots. He takes his 2 year old Daughter with him. Let's her tell stories about big Bucks while holding her hands up by her cute little head as if a deers rack, She even tells a story about a non typical and holds one hand down! If thay dont have it leased, or to many members of their own family hunting it, he gets permission every time!!! One old fella was laughing and had tears in his eyes and said, you sure got her trained dont ya Son. It works for Him. I'm gonna barrow her next year!!!

RE: Help me get this land!
LOL see there!

RE: Help me get this land!
Let's hear some of your best lines to use when approaching a landowner with potential to gain permission. |
RE: Help me get this land!
A box of beer and a jar of wiskey usually works good for me.
|
RE: Help me get this land!
Send the nice lady a thank you / X-Mas card or even a small gift thanking her for allowing you access to recover your deer. After the hunting season follow up with her concerning your wants. Best of luck with this honey hole.
|
RE: Help me get this land!
Don't make a trip over there to thank her and ask at that time, instead take her some deer sausage, etc. and thank her. While there just get to know her better and let her do most of the talking. Many times they will let slip something that needs to be done or they just want someone to lend an ear. Wait a few days or a couple of weeks and strike up another conversation and if she is in the mood, you might seek permission at that time. If its unhunted and a deer paradise there is a reason. Kid gloves needed for this one!
|
RE: Help me get this land!
If it is an old lady by herself, she could definitely use some yard work or work around the house in exchange for a hunt or two. That is what I would offer her and she couldn't refuse!
|
RE: Help me get this land!
Offer golf lessons of course.
|
RE: Help me get this land!
This aint a gun in my pocket and Im sure glad to see you. ![]() LMAO. Well she is a looker for mid 40's!I'm liking all the ideas and input. I think a follow up thank you for letting me track the deer on your land is a good idea. I'll bring her a couple summer sausages, offer to be the son she never had, and see where the conversation leads. Thanks for the advice. |

RE: Help me get this land!
Wow you're right around the corner from me.
|
RE: Help me get this land!
As everyone has said offer something when asking to hunt next year. I take it you found the doe. Take a small portion to say thanks for letting you track the deer. Also find out what she enjoys. Personal situation yrs ago property owner enjoyed sewing was willing to allow use of land for some of the pelts so she could make x-mas gifts. Good luck
|
RE: Help me get this land!
This may sound funny but don't ask for permission during the hunting season. Wait until summer then ask, I do this when seeking permission for my fox and coyote trapping. Most landowners will look at you more seriously because you are planning ahead and not just trying to (Enter there property and kill something). The larger landowners (FARMERS) are usually bailing hay, offer to help them for a weekend chances are you will have a place to hunt for life.
