Sick to my stomach........**Edit 7/16 - Mount Pics**
Well the buck we had 2 encounters with this year at APAJaws property in central NY is dead. I shot a doe he was running and got a peek of him sneaking away on 11/6, and another one of our crew saw him feeding in the clover patch the week before I saw him.
We found him today gut shot, laying near the stream. The yotes got him pretty good and we guess he has been there since Monday, maybe Tuesday. We just this weekend finished finding his other shed from last season as well (we now have both). The only good news is that we cut the head off and will be getting him mounted using the cape from my NY rifle buck that was killed 2 weeks before off the same property. We rough scored him as a mid to high 130" buck gross, as a main frame 10 tiny 1" G4's but plenty of mass. He also had 7" G3's, 9" G2's, and 6" G1's as well as an 18" inside spread w/ 22" main beams and an H1 measurement of 5 4/8"............[:@]:(. Pictures to follow tomorrow.......... ![]() I was really hoping he would get to make it till next year. We still don't know who shot him, but hope to find out more soon. It wasn't anyone from our party, we suspect someone on the public land next to us got a poke at him w/ a rifle. |
RE: Sick to my stomach........
well you know he got the does this year .so theirs still some good jeans in them woods.

RE: Sick to my stomach........
srry to hear that....

RE: Sick to my stomach........
That's tough. I have several deer I hope made it through the orange army. I won't know until I see them. I do know if they stay on my landowners property they are safe, I also know no deer were shot on his or adjoining property but I'm not sure where they went since archery. Hopeful tho.

RE: Sick to my stomach........
sorry to see that

RE: Sick to my stomach........
Thats to bad, he was a dandy. Just think how the person feels that shot him and did not recover it!

RE: Sick to my stomach........
Thanks for the kind words guys. I actually passed this guy last year as a 2.5 year old 8 pointer and have both of his sheds from last year as well (one of the guys from camp found his other shed the same day we found him dead). So because of all this I feel a bit attached to him because I was fortunate enough to have quite a few encounters with him.
He is at the taxidermist now and we are using an ears back sneak form for him because of how he was sneaking away from me on 11/6 when I shot the doe he was running and didn't realize he was there. Once the mount is done I will update with a pic of the mount and his sheds from last year. |
RE: Sick to my stomach........
That sucks.
Buzzard and worms got to eat. |
RE: Sick to my stomach........

RE: Sick to my stomach........
Don't know how many remember this thread. Here is a little update though with pics of the mount.
We mounted his horns using the cape of the rifle buck I killed this year off the same property, picked the mount up last weekend. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Just to clarify as well, there are no big deer in NY. [8D];) |

Way to preserve the legacy of that deer RJ.
Nice lookin' mount. BTW, is that photo taken within the shed you built a year or so ago? |

RE: Sick to my stomach........
And a few more cool pics. Here are the sheds he was wearing in the 05' season when I passed him as a 2.5 y/o 8 point compared to the rack he had when we found him.

What ever happened to the shed/cabin? It's going..........getting ready to insulate and panel the inside off. Have electricity in there, carpet, TV, VCR/DVD player, collection of hunting DVD's, cabelas deluxe camping kitchen set with sink and cupboards, some furniture, hunting equipment, etc. Stayed inside is quite a few times this summer while working on the food plots and visiting with family. Plan is to get it insulated and paneled with knotty pine tongue and groove before endof September, and then will be heating it with a Mr. Heater big buddy for this season and getting the beds setup in there. Right now I only have air matresses but have a full size bed for myself I haven't brought down yet, and want to build bunk beds on the other side of the room for APAJaws and any other guests to use before season gets here. The rest of the plans will have to wait until after hunting season this year, I really want to make a lot of storage space inside to be efficient with the space and then build a covered patio/porch on the front of it next spring. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
RE: Sick to my stomach........
RJ, those shed pictures with the actual rack are amazing. It is pretty amazing how much more antler deer put on every year. Those are some great photos to show how much difference a year can make. Once again, it is great you were able to recover the skull, the set of sheds, and be able to hang it on the wall with pride.
And for the shabin, it looks pretty sweet to me. Sounds like with all of the additions and what you have in there already, it will be a pretty sweet set-up when complete. Looks like it serves its' purpose already. |
RE: Sick to my stomach........
Matt, i do remember that post, i would be sick also finding him like that. The mount looks great and its amazing how much they can grow year to year. cool having the sheds to. The shabin looks groovie baby :D question, the feet in the background for the ladder stand. where did you get those? i did not know anyone offered them.
|
RE: Sick to my stomach........
Very nice. Awesome view as well...
|
RE: Sick to my stomach........
both the deer and the shabin look good.:D
|
RE: Sick to my stomach........
Too bad about the buck, man, I can't afford to mount deer I've taken, let alone ones I've found:(
The shabin looks great, alot like how we rough it in a shack, but ours is framed with pine poles and clad with corrugated tin. My favorite part of this whole post was seeing how you mounted the stick between the shoulder mounts, I take it that stick took an arrow for the one that got away? |
