Spring Turkey with a bow
I know it's a little early but I was wondering if anyone in here spring turkey hunts (my first passion) and if so do you use a bow and what kind of success have you had. I've been thinking about using a bow for all of my hunting experiences.

RE: Spring Turkey with a bow
I've managed to pull it off....once. Without the aid of a blind mind you. Sitting next to a tree....got lucky. Get a good pop up blind and have at it, it's a blast.

RE: Spring Turkey with a bow
I took a nice tom about five years ago with my bow , I was using my Double Bull T5 ground blind that was set up against some brush and had a love trangle decoy set up in front of it .

RE: Spring Turkey with a bow
sounds like my cup of tea. Are you guys using the giateen or regular broadhead? I know the normal shot placement (at least on 3D target) with a regular broadhead is through the chest (side or front) or in the back door but it looks like these shots would ruin the meat. Would you dare to take a shot at the head with a regular 1" broadhead?

RE: Spring Turkey with a bow
I usually take my first bird with a gun then time permitting go out w/bow I've taken about 5 birds. Get a good blind it makes it so much easier. I have yet to take a big tom mostly jakes but with a bow thats a trophy to me!

RE: Spring Turkey with a bow
I would love to hunt turkeys with a bow, but with limited time and opportunities, I'm having a difficult enough time taking them with my shotgun! :D If I find that I'm consistently tagging out every year, then I'll make the switch.

RE: Spring Turkey with a bow
I have shot 3 total with the bow. 2 spring time and 1 in the fall. A big arse expandabe broadhead. The 2 spring turkeys I waited for them to go into strut and shot them up the bunghole. The fall turkey I actually hit in the hip. I think I will try this shot again. No tracking. They cant run or fly with a broke leg.

Springcaller, use monster mechanicals. The bigger the better. The guillotine is GREAT if you can hit them in the head...but transporting them attached to your arrows is tricky...
I recommend Rocket Hammerheads or Aftershock's.....the bigger the better. |
