Do you still hunt with guns
I was just wondering, I love to bowhunt and it is my number 1 but. I still hunt with rifle and muzzleloader. Hell if there was a slingshot season i'd hunt that one too.
|
RE: Do you still hunt with guns
Most definitely. I like the totally two different experieinces, long range-short range.
|
RE: Do you still hunt with guns
Yes. I hunt with a gun because of the time I spend doing it with family and friends. If I did not have others to share gun hunting with, I would probably not pursue it any longer though. I would still continue to bow hunt though if I was doing it alone.

NO, unless it has wings.

RE: Do you still hunt with guns
I hunt with a gun also. I spend most of my time in the woods with a bow but when gun season comes I grab it and go. I have a 13 yr old brother and he just can't pull 45lbs with a bow yet so it is a great way for us to spend time together. We actually learn alot from each other.
|
RE: Do you still hunt with guns
yup but i mostly use a muzzleloader though, muzzleloader hunting was my first passion
|
RE: Do you still hunt with guns
Sure! Boomsticks are fun, so are smoke poles. They're all neat. Most of my kills are still under 30 yards though, my last smoke pole kill was less than 10 yards and on the ground. I can finally wear my baseball cap forward with guns. :D
|
RE: Do you still hunt with guns
absolutely
|
RE: Do you still hunt with guns
Not anymore my guns have 2 seasons under lock.
|
RE: Do you still hunt with guns
Sure. I try to get my deer with the bow, but if that doesn't work, out comes the gun.
I may have an opportunity to hunt in Wyoming in the next year or two for mule deer and/or elk. This will be my first time hunting out west. I'll be taking the gun. |
RE: Do you still hunt with guns
The only thing(s) I hunt with guns anymore are feathered animals and varmits.
Big game with firearms won't happen again until my next lifetime, and I doubt it even then. |

ORIGINAL: Jimimac ORIGINAL: Washington Hunter Big game with firearms won't happen again until my next lifetime, and I doubt it even then. May I ask why? It just doesn't appeal to me. Not that I don't get a rush any time I hunt, I get more of a rush with my bow within 30 yards. Its more of a challenge physically and mentally. |
RE: Do you still hunt with guns
BHO for anything with hide. Feathered game gets the bb's.
|
RE: Do you still hunt with guns
Thanks. I much prefer my bow too, but even at 43 I can still enjoy gun hunts in the right situation.
It just surprises me a guy your age would feel that way. |
RE: Do you still hunt with guns
I hunt with both and will do so for as long as I can. Here in Illinois you can hunt with a pistolduring the shotgun season ifyou like. The range is about the same as with a bow 50yds and under but try aiming an iron sighted 4 4/8 Ruger single action at something 30yrds away. I get a thrill out of both guns and archery and both can be quite challenging.

RE: Do you still hunt with guns
I hunt with a rifle once or twice a year while spending time with my family. I definately perfer bow hunting. I took a really nice 10 this rifle season with my bow.
|
RE: Do you still hunt with guns
I do still use the rifle and the m/l as well. Although, I will admit....I just don't get as much thrill out of it anymore. I bowhunt alot during the gun seasons now. I'd rather use the bow no doubt. Heck last year I bow hunted on open day of the rifle season....my friends called me crazy. :D

RE: Do you still hunt with guns
Sidelock percussion ML on rare occasions for deer.More often for hogs, and adouble barrel 12ga percussion ML for birds. Due to my inexperience with bowhunting in cold weather I may take the smokepole out tomorrow.

RE: Do you still hunt with guns
I sold off my deer rifles after getting into bowhunting hard and heavy... I just don't think I could (well, think is the wrong word here; I KNOW I can't...) derive the same enjoyment from a gun kill as opposed to a bow kill.
It's very simplistic, but for me it comes down to the difference between hunting and shooting. I grew up with a gun in my hand, qualified expert with the M-16 while in the service (meaning I never missed a target out to 300 meters) and basically got to the point -- like tons of other people -- that if I could see it with a gun in my hand it was dead. It was that simple. I've said it before, but when you see an animal with a gun, the hunt's over. When you see it with a bow, it's just starting. |

My first passion is archery hunting, but I would never give up the diversity of rifle hunting and muzzleloader hunting. With a firearm I feel like I can "take it to them",cover ground etc.,itis not nearly as passive as bowhunting is for most of us.There are very few people that can stalk and kill big whitetails with a bow, consistently.
So firearms hunting fulfills the desire in me to roam.I think still hunting and stalking are a blast! If that doesn't stir some adrenaline or sense of challenge in a hunter than I am not sure what will! |

RE: Do you still hunt with guns
I am going on a managed deer hunt with a slug gun this december and did so last year as well. Last year I took my first deer with a rifle and it was just as exciting as my first with a bow. I don't own a rifle of my own though so I stick to bowhunting only.

RE: Do you still hunt with guns
I have always and will always hunt with a gun. I should clarify that 200-300 yard "shooting" type of hunting doesn't interest me at all. I think every deer but 1 or 2 I have gotten with my gun were within bow range. My longest kill was 65 yards. I shoot a smooth bore short barrel Rem870 with Breneke MP slugs. DEFINATELY not the most accurate thing out there........so it is still a respectable chalenge IMO. Most of my early kills were off the ground with open sights...........maybe harder then killing a deer from a stand with a bow IMO.
Gun season has a TOTALLY different feel to it.........and I love that too. Perhaps most importantly is the fact that my father gave up archery after a few years of recurves and then one of the first BEAR compounds. Gun season is all he has hunted for years now and there is no way on earth I am gonna miss a chance to go hunt with my dad. |
RE: Do you still hunt with guns
When I killed my first deer with a bow it was the most fullfilling thing I ever did as a hunter. I wanted to give up gun hunting but never did. I enjoy both types of hunting. I guess it's the thrill of out smarting nature or maybe being on an evenkiel with nature.

RE: Do you still hunt with guns
No matter how it's odne, it's great. Bow Hunting is awesome, but muzzle loading is a blast too, so "Whatever trips your trigger!" Right on.

When he decided to get me into hunting, I couldn't yet draw a legal weight, so he gave up archery for the first few years and we hunted with rifles. As soon as I was able to draw a legal bow, he went out and bought us both brand new bows, and we haven't looked back since. I know that when he is no longer able to draw a legal compound, he'll get a disabled/senior permit and shoot a cross bow. Any ideaabout who's going to buy it for him? |
RE: Do you still hunt with guns
Ive been doing both for about 30 years,Ive got 2 sons who also love to hunt. This year they saw the ugly side of gun hunting.Drunks in the woods with guns,I wont even call them hunters. They gang up in 30-40 man bunches and push everything in sight.Public land -posted land-everything.At the end of the day there are wounded deer in the woods, bambies on every tailgate, and a couple big bucks. That is no way to treat something like a deer(mabe a coyote). It just seems unfitting.Id figure the ratio of shots fired to deer harvested is about 10-1. Im sure alot of folks here dont agree with me,But im done with the gun thing.Ill wait till the woods are quiet again and go after them with a bow, when there not running for 9 days without a break.
