I'll never understand why people come all the way up here to shoot a spike on opening day.. Tradition? Meat? I dont know.. but I Know a guy who drove up from Lansing, 12 hours to where my buddies hunt. They saw the guy walk in on opening morning with a flashlight, sit next to a tree, about 100 yrds away from them, and shoot a 3 point at day break.. 12 hours for that? The guy had no clue where he was at when he walked in either..

Yea it dosen't make much sense to me ether to drive that much distance to shoot a young buck or doe when they can do the same thing close to where they live.
When ever I take my trip to Kalkaska , I'm there to spend some time with family members and do some hunting as well.
If I get lucky to to tag a buck, I'll share the meat with them I'll also try to buy an doe permit for that area just in case I want to shoot one.

I hunt just south of Iron Mt in Wi. If interested I have a small cabin and there is a ton of land to hunt. Probably to late this year but next year might be a option. None of my friends bow hunt and I think it would be cool to be able to hunt with a member for a week or so.

Well, I need a new place to hunt as well. Not for the reasons you gave, but because the private land I've been hunting for almost 20 years is being sold. It makes me sad. I'll miss it. To add insult to injury, the small woodlot behind my house that I have permnission to hunt is also being sold, so I'm starting from scratch yet again. I've lost every hunting spot I've ever had at some time or another, so the saga continues. That's just how it is when you can't afford your own land. All you guys that have your own place,consider yourselves fortunate.

Time to adapt and overcome once more. I'll find another place. I think I'll also spread my wings a bit and try my hand out of state again.
