RE: What the heck happened? I am really confused!
Did this deer stand on his back legs...... put his front hoves in his ears and stick his tounge at you? Sometimes deer act drunk to avoid being chased by other deer. Sometimes deer act like comedians and heckle hunters from the safety of the bush.. calling out names like "your mother can make a better shot".........
fortunately these deer all live on long island |
RE: What the heck happened? I am really confused!
Well i am happy to here that the deer is doing fine.
But the shot was still a bad choice to make, First off the shot angle was a low % shot not that it wouldn`t kill him? But the chance`sof you making a perfect hit dead on are low. (imo) you should have waited a little longer for the deer to turn broadside or just quatering away Like others havesead. 2nd If your not sure of the shot you have made and the deer is still standing send another arrow on its way Never hurts to be sure! We all have to learn and the guys here are just trying help you for the next time this happens and if you keep hunting? it will. Good luck next time. |
RE: What the heck happened? I am really confused!
I have given much thought to what many of you have said and that maty not have been thebest shot to take butprobably not as bad as many of you believe. http://www.bowhunter-ed.com/course/ch7_shot_strategy.htm http://www.bowhunter-ed.com/course/ch7_setting_up_shots.htm Yes, there will be individuals who will discard this basic information and who feel the are above such information. But to me, the basics should not be ignored by anyone including myself. The more experience I gain, the respect I have for the authors. |

You know what you can all go take your comments and do you know what with them. I tried to make peace of this post agreed that the shot was not a great choice but you miserable people continue to poke and prod. Now claiming that I was shooting past legal hunting hours.I do not know if you guys were picked on and beat up when you were little but where I am from a little respect goes a long way. i have done nothing to anybody here yet many of you puff up your chests and make comments to try and prove to one another who is best. I have led a very successful life so you have all given me advice to "make me a better hunter" so take this advice to be a better person. stop being so bitter and self righteous, you will catch more flies with honey then you will with vinegar.
Anybody reading this post that agrees with me should really say something.I am sick of seeing all these newer members being belittled and mocked by these so called veterans. Read this post from the very beginning and you will see that some people just can't leave well enough alone, even when i say thanks it is a lesson learned they still keep going and going. You may be great hunters but you need to learn a lesson in being better, kinder people. Once again. Thanks. |

Sylvan< I was amused that he would admit it on the WWW. I did a similar thing a few years ago, hadn't read a change in the rules that well and came on here and got called on it.

RE: What the heck happened? I am really confused!
I didn't read the other posts, but sounds like the norm really, but you did take a bad shot.
Here is an idea for anyone that is reading. If you take a shot like this, you've decided to do a diservice to everyone. The deer, hunters in general and yourself. But, as if the shot wasn't bad enough, you come here and post it for the entire world to see. To many people, you represent "hunting", you know, since you are a hunter and you do subscribe to this web page. So people (or nonhunters) are going to read your post and associate your actions with all of us. And now you act as if you don't understand why people puff up their chests. Here is an idea - if you ever take a shot like that again, go find the deer. The internet isn't going to go find it for you. As far as I know there isn't a helpmefindmydeer web site, so why aren't you outside looking? What were you actually doing here? Looking for everyone to say "it's ok, don't worry about it, we wound deer all the time, and leave them to die for nothing" so that you could be lazy and go hunting again tomorrow only to repeat the same thing and then repost! Or were you actually looking for help? If I were looking for help, I think I'd go read an article on how to track game, or better yet, I would try to already know how before I went hunting. Step away from the PC - now go find the deer. If you wanthelp, as a friend, relative or neighbor to help you look. Or better yet get a dog. Good luck, learn something from this, don't post crap. |
RE: What the heck happened? I am really confused!
ORIGINAL: longislandhunter Ok here is the deal. I was posted up on the edge of a field right before sunset.I saw 5 bucks that afternoon the biggest being a big split brow tine eleven point, but could not get them close enough for a shot. Anyway right before shooting light dissapeared I had a nice 7 or eight point come out in the field about 60 yards away. I grunted at him and he started walking directly at me, head on. I came to full draw and he stopped at about 25 yards away. He was slightly quartering and I knew that I had to shoot before it got to dark or he busted me. I aimed right behind his shoulder although it was almost a straight on shot. i let the arrow go and he jumped up and ran off about 30 yards and just stopped. Just then i heard a bubbling/hissing noise and figured it was his lung deflating. Suddenly he started making what sounded like a choking noise and he kept moving his head like crazy. He walked around in a 20 foot circle for 5 minutes and it looked like he was going to collapse, he looked to be limping. he kept making that same weird choking noise and moving his head back and fourth. He then slowly walked away and at 50 yards i could not see him anymore because it got to dark.I waited an hour and found my arrow. Here is where it gets weid. No blood on the arrow and no deer.I am so confused, this deer acted crazy I figured he was definitely hit. What do you guys think happened. I had to miss if there was no blood, right? Why would he act that way? Is there any spot like the neck or esophagus that would not leave blood? please help me. thanks Thanks 1. I am sure you are going to get flamed, and rightly so, for being a total idiot and taking a head one shot. 2. Learn to take ethical shots, please, so we dont have to yell at your again. RE: What the heck happened? I am really confused!
The first picture is almost exact, except i aimedbehind the shoulder instead of in front. That was the real mistakebut anyway i give up. Self righteous was an understatement. I can't believe how many perfect people and professional hunters belong to this site. You all insist on going and going, becoming more insulting as it goes.
Like I said I give up. Once i become the "perfect hunter" i will start posting again. I cant believe there are only two people on here that think these comments are completely insane, childish and self-righteous. Maybe I am crazy. |
RE: What the heck happened? I am really confused!
Here is what you were dealing with (see attachment). This skeleton is more on a head on basis though then your shot. In the angle which you said you shot at, those large bones between the leg and ths shoulder blade come into play. If you were in a stand, then the shoulder blade will come into play. In any case there is heavy bone which would have to be shot though or aroundwithout deflection possibilities to get the double lung. Tough shot. |
RE: What the heck happened? I am really confused!
Icould kill that buck in the top pic IF my arrow went where I wanted it too. Thats the kicker though....IF
You have a better margin of error with a broadside shot. Those quartering-into shots are tricky and should not be taken. (You know that by now:)) In my experiences, a deer will eventually turn and allow for a better shot. It may take a little while but it more than likely will happen. If not, theres always next time. I'm done and Good luck! |
