Fixed Stand and Climber Setup and Exit

I hunted out of one of my fixed stands this afternoon (with no luck by the way), and an idea came to me as I climbed my sticks and entered the stand. I wonder if some of the seasoned veterans of HNI would be interested in creating a video or slide show of how to properly hang and/or enter and exit a fixed stand setup. It would be nice also if someone would do the same for a climber, as in a Summit or Lone Wolf. This would include harness setup and hanging sticks/steps as well as ascending and descending the tree, entering and exiting stand, ect., just as if you were going to hunt the stand. I believe this would be of great help to newbies like myself and so many others just getting into bow hunting. Of course whomever submits this video/slideshow should also post a disclaimer to the extent that they are not responsible for any injuries, mishaps, ect., resulting from someone following their technique.

Now the good part. I for one would like to personally ask a few of the members here to contribute to this cause. Of course, if you can not participate, no hard feelings. I understand. This request includes, but is not limited to... Rob/PA Bowyer, Hardcore Hunter, HNI Justin, GregH, and mobowhuntr. Anyone else with input please feel free to jump right in. That is if you can take time away from your hunting/work/family schedule.

Thanks, LT

Chances are I'm heading back up to the ranch this weekend to take down one of my stands. If I remember I'll see what I can do about taking some pictures and throwing something together.

LT; I have been meaning to film myself doing a lone wolf set up with the LW sticks and hangon. My lovely wife lost our leads for our camcorder so we can't hook the camcorder up to a computer or a Tv for viewing. I plan on going to Best buy or somewhere one of these days and getting the leads I need.
BTW, I am honored that you want my input.

RE: Fixed Stand and Climber Setup and Exit

LT, I'd love to help you out. I first will have to go out and pull my stands and climbing sticks.

I may not however be the best example because I don't use a Prussic's Knot and rope like one should. I climbing in and belt off, not even with a full body harness. How I hunt I never recommend to anyone else. I climb poles for a living and I do take short cuts I would never recommend to others to do. I recommend a full body harness, I just do things differently after 25 years of doing so. When I hunted with Jeff (SBGobblers), I was impressed how effeciently he got into his trees with his climber and safety harness. I could do it right for a video, it will just take some time. I hope you don't have a deadline..lol

I can't upload video yet so I may have to do via a slide show. Again, this well take some time. I can offer a couple pics from hanging stands for now.

Thanks Washington. I would really appreciate that and I really feel like others would benefit also. If I had more experience and a video cam I would do it. I really thought I would get more response on this. See what you can do, and thanks.

Thanks Rob, I new I could count on you to contribute to a good cause. And about your climbing harness/belt....For shame, For shame. LOL I understand when we get "young" and set in our ways it's hard to change. You should practice with the belt and harness and get used to it though cause one day you will be too young to do without it. LOL Anyway, thanks for the pics and any other help you can come up with. (No deadline)

Thanks, LT

RE: Fixed Stand and Climber Setup and Exit

Here is a written walk thru on how I do it LT:

I use 5 sticks as I like to get up highif I can. I use a summit seat o pants safety vest. I carry2 safety ropes with the prussic knot on each in my vest. The vesthas a linesmans' belt and a middle of the back harnass. I place the 1st two sticks without the harnass hooked up. I then leave my bow on the ground with whatever else I brought with me attached to a pull up rope and the other end of the pullup rope attacked to a clip that my safety harnass vesthas on it.. I have a little shoulder sling that I use to carry the other 3 sticks up the tree with. The lone wolf stand is on my back and I hook up my linesmans rope. This allows me to use both hands to silently and safely hang each stick and my stand with. I make sure that when Ihang my stand that thelast stickstep is higher than the stand so that I can step downonto the stand. Before I unhook my linesmans' rope and step onto the treestandplatform, I hook up my middle of the back safety harnass to the tree above my stand with another safety rope that fits in my safety vest rear pouch. I am never unhooked this way. Once my safety harnass is hooked up, I unhook my linesmans rope and step ontothetreestand platform. Both of my safetyropes have the prussic knot and this knot is a must IMO.

Hope this helps and take care and be safe. You will find this type of mobile hunting very productive. I always bring the sticks and stand out after each hunt. I just toss each step to the ground when tearing down the setup and my standis back on my back as I climb down. I can hunt where ever I want this way depending on the wind and I can get into just about any tree I want.

RE: Fixed Stand and Climber Setup and Exit

Thanks for the reply hardcore. And by the way, I like your technique. Sounds very safe and easy. I would still really love some video footage if you or someone else can get it. There is just no replacing live footage of "How to" on these kind of things. Regardless, thanks for whatever you can contribute.

Myself, I use a Summit harness that came with my Viper. I use a safety rope w/prussic knot on this harness when using my climber. I use a combination of this and a safety belt attached to the D-loops on my harness when hanging sticks and fixed stand.

Thanks, LT

No problem; glad to help. I edited it a bunch so I don't know if you have read my finished version or not.
