Have you ever heard a buck "Growl" while hunting?
Just curious how many of you have ever actually heard a real "buck growl" while hunting. I know I haven't.

RE: Have you every heard a buck "Growl" while hunting?
No. More marketing hype to remove more dollars from my wallet on a product that ends up in the bottom of my hunting box never to see the light of day again.

RE: Have you every heard a buck "Growl" while hunting?
No I have not. I think they just started doing it last year so the call makers had something to do in the off season. HAHA:D

I thought I never had until I bought the MAD Growl call. Now I guess I have heard it before. I always thought it was a duck making that sound.

I'm really suprised at how many HAVE heard it. I wonder how many of those guys actually heard another hunter with a Buck Growl call? I think you could hunt your entire life and never hear that sound but maybe I'm wrong.

I bought the Primos Roar and it comes with a mini DVD. After watching the DVD, I realized that I have heard it several times. To meit just kinda sounds likea loud, aggressive grunt. Used mine the first time on the opening day of our firearms season. About 8:00 I tried it and about a minute later I smoked a 4 1/2 year old 8 pt at 50 yards. He came in looking.

RE: Have you every heard a buck "Growl" while hunting?
A few years ago I was bored in stand and started blowing into my grunt tube. Low and behold I heard something grunt back at me. I waited, nothing...I grunted again, it grunted back. I figured it was another hunter, so I grunted and it grunted back, had to be another hunter. Well I got frustrated and blew very loudly into the tube, the next thing I know I heard my first growl and snort weeze followed by a nice buck chasing a doe through the swamp about 40 yards from me. Didn't think much about it until recently when I seen the Drury's promoting their call...THAT WAS THE SOUND I HEARD. Over30 years hunting, heard it once.

My dad saw a 130" buck this year and it was chasing a doe making a sound he never heard before. He said it sounded different than just a normal grunt. I bought the buck roar and showed him my dvd that came with it and he said that's the exact sound he heard. I think that a lot more people have heard it and just thought it to be a grunt.

ORIGINAL: MOmightymite I think that a lot more people have heard it and just thought it to be a grunt. We have all heard all kinds of noise`s out there and just made out to be what we thought it is? When in fact it`s something all together different? |
RE: Have you every heard a buck "Growl" while hunting?
I dont think I ever heard it until after I bought the call. I know thats very ironic but it happened. Here's the link to the story: http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1812190
For those of you who have seen the instructional dvd, the call i heard was the same one that smaller buck makes when chasing off those bucks from the wounded/shot doe in estrous. And the sound the buck from pike county illinois made (guy sent in home video to MAD Calls). It made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. If you watch the video some growls/roars are very aggressive more like a roar and some are subtle like a growl. I definitely heard the roar. |
RE: Have you every heard a buck "Growl" while hunting?
i have heard my pet buck make that noise a few times. He also make s a different noise when he yawns too. Another strange noise he make is when i hold the cat up to him and he chews on the cats ears and makes a whineing noise. kinda strange but you learn alot from pet deer. |
RE: Have you every heard a buck "Growl" while hunting?
I heard it this year for the 1st time. I had a big buck with a hot doe fending off a smaller buck. He grunted, growled and snort wheezed at the smaller buck while chasing him and holding an aggressive posture. I watched this for a half hour(mostly within 50 yds)and heard noises I've never heard before.

good poll! (most polls are stupid). i had to say no. but, this year after using my 'buck growl' call, two deer came right in. i shot the doe and when it hit her she made the exact growl sound from the video (which by the way is impossible to make with the call). I never heard a deer make that sound (or maybe I just don't remember them making that sound because there's never been any fuss over it) sort of funny.

RE: Have you every heard a buck "Growl" while hunting?
Nope........I have heard a few chuckle. (Ok it was more of snicker but I don't want to talk about it);):(

RE: Have you every heard a buck "Growl" while hunting?
Yes, belive it or not the first sound out of a deer that touched these ears was a deep roar. About three years ago nov. 2. I know the date for it was the day i shot that 5pointer, first one. It was a good day!

RE: Have you every heard a buck "Growl" while hunting?
First time I ever herd it was in 1983, I was hunting a rub line were a bean and corn field met, when a 170 class Buck comes in, makes a scrape, rubs 2 new trees, then walks over and stands 15 yards inside the wood line with the outline of his body broken up by a bush. By this time I was a reck, (not being able to get a shot at him because of limbs). The Buck stood there for probably 10 minutes only raising and lowering his head to get a better view of the bean field when something caught his attention. I looked up to see a smaller, younger buck chasing a doe around about 200 yards away, When the Big Buck let out the loudest, long,URRRRRRP I had ever herd, and took off after the buck and doe in the field at a gate, grunting every other step 5 times, and chased them back into the corn field!4 other times I have herd the "GROWL", 3 were about the same as the first, (Aggressive behavior) except the one last year. My wife had spine shot a buck and when we went back to get it, it was still alive. I had her get in front of the buck to get its attenhion, then I grabed it by the horns ( this is when it "GROWLED")gave it a twist, then threw my body weight on it and broke its neck. I found that werd, but guess itwould alsobe considerd aggressive behavior!

RE: Have you every heard a buck "Growl" while hunting?
Four years ago during the rut, I had a 6 point with a huge rack come into my set about a 1/2 hour after a doe had passed through. She had bedded for a while and moved on.
He tracked her into the set and when he got to where she had bedded, he made that odd sound and looked toward the direction she had gone. It was a remarkable sound and I'll never forget it. I passed on that big 6 and to this day I regret it. I just don't care for how a 6 point rack looks on the wall, but this one was really massive and very tall and wide. |
RE: Have you every heard a buck "Growl" while hunting?
I have but it was on a bad note and not sure if it would attract a deer. I spine shot a buck once and when I got out of my stand he made a sound that was like a growl but I did not enjoy it at all! The sound he made and the way he looked at me I knew if he was to get up I was a dead man! Not sure if its the same as the mating growl that people use but it was a growl!
