I'm not familiar with the particular laws where you are at, but I believe the general rule on public land is that motor vehicles are illegal, for whatever purpose.
The deer would be a legal kill, but you generally can't drive onto the land for whatever reason.

i know its illegal but if i got caught i dont think i would get in to much trouble cause i had a good reason, and was quick. my spot is about 2 miles from the road, and theres a big dirt road to drive on to get to the deer, if i cant bring my atv than ill just drive my truck back there.

Seems to me that if it's posted NO MOTORIZED VEHICLES on public land and you do get caught by the D N R or GAME WARDEN , then you could get a really big fine and your ATV taken or jail time.

I guess it's a closed forest service orloggingroad? If it's illegal for atv's on that road, then it's also illegal for a truck, motorcycle, golf cart or any other motorized vehicle.
By the way, if it's federal land, you're looking at fines up to $5,000.

Your best bet is to call your local DNR or parks services to see what the punishment is for breaking that law. Could range anywhere from a simple ticket to having your vehicle and game taken away.
