Stuck me a doe! (Update!!)
#1
I went out this evening, and decided, to hunt a saddle on our farm that I hadent hunted in years,, When I was a kid I always hunted there, and used to have decent luck there, but since, there is a road to one of my food plots that goes right across the area, and it gets some traffic from the four wheeler and tractor from time to time, so I just never figured it to be much of a good spot anymore. Anyway, this evening I decided to go sit there for old times sake, I climbed up with my climber and pulled up my bow and nocked an arrow, and sat down to pull up my pack, I looked and right down the trail where I walked in came a doe, she was on a mission, and was already within 35 yards and covering ground fast. I got my bow and stood as she passed at about 10 yards, she slowed to a stop at 21 yards, slightly quartering away. I drew and settled the pin behind the shoulder, but just as I was squeezing the trigger, she took a step and the shot looked like it was back further than I had wanted. I looked like it went in about the last rib, and was a passthrough, but I didnt think she was quartered enough for that to be good, she sprinted hard for about 50 yards then stopped and walked another 50 then stopped, and started to weave back and forth like she was looking for somewhere to lie down, and I lost sight of her in some very thick stuff right there. I didnt get down until dark, and slipped over to where the arrow was laying, feeling pretty bad about the shot, but the arrow was completely covered from end to end, with good blood, Im thinking it was a better angle than I had originally thought. I smelled the arrow and it doesnt stink like guts and was prety much clean blood, dark red, with some very tiny black particles on it, but Im pretty sure it is bark and dirt from laying on the ground. It was dark already and it had been 2 hours since the shot, but its going to be cold tonight, so I justslipped out quietly the opposite direction she went. Ill go back in the morning and take up the trail. Im confident Ill find her close by in the morning, but ust didnt want to risk anything in the dark this evening. Sorry for the long post,, just wanted to share the hunt.

Well done man, sounds like you did the right thing on getting out if you weren't 100% positive about the hit. I would imagine you'll find her in the morning. Keep us updated.

Well it sounds like you did the right thing letting her go overnight and by the sounds of the arrow and where it was a passthrough I bet that you will find her close to where you lost sight of her good luck on you track job tomorow.

I went back this morning about 8:30 and was happy to find a good bloodtrail, and trailed her to where I last saw her last night right into some thick stuff. Then it just stopped, or I lost it. I looked for a few minutes and decided to mark it and circle around the back side of the thick brush. I circled around the back side, and spotted her lying just above me on the ridge, she had made a 90 degree turn where I lost the trail, and went about 20 yards, she wasnt 100 yards from the tree. When I spotted her, I told my 4 year old son, he needed to be watching up ahead for the deer, cause I was looking for blood on the ground, so he starts looking around, and then starts yelling "Daddy, I see it!!" I was so excited and so was he, he was so proud he found my deer for me!
When we got there he told me to stay at the stand, and he would go find it and call me when he found it,lol. Anyway, as I was thinking it was a little back, got liver and a lung, the entrance is behind the tree in the pic, and the exit is forward of that on the other side. Im pretty tickled and the Switchback XT is officially broken in! Heres a pic of my boy with the deer, He took one of me too, but its a little blurry. This one is better anyway, I love it! Couldnt have been better, I couldnt wait to get him on a blood trail and let him find the deer. He loves it all.
