Your First Bow???
Just wondering what was your first bow or bows when you started hunting (recurve or compound).I started shooting when I was seven and had a little Fiberglass bow and my Grandfather made me arrows on his table saw(boy was he busy)and then I went to a Ben Pearson recurve.
My first compound was a Bear Whitetail Hunter. If you think back to your original bows we have shot and what we shoot now the industry has changed alot. |
RE: Your First Bow???
Boy you aren't kidding! I started out with an Indian recurve. My first compound was a Fred Bear Black Bear.Must have been at least 20 years ago on that one. I remember when 240 fps with an overdraw and straws for arrows was "fast"!

RE: Your First Bow???
First bow I shot was my fathers Bear recurve from early 60's. I think it was taller than me at the time. First bow I owned was in the early 80's. It was a darton 40b, shot fingers and no sights. Believe it or not I still pull those two out once in a while, and they still work great. I now shoot a hoyt with all the bells and whistles. its nice sometimes to pull the oldtimers out and feel that string in my hand again.

RE: Your First Bow???
Well PAowhunter I am in the same group as you and Q2MD, bear whitetail hunter but I sold it to get another bow I wish I still had that bow. My mom bought it for me and she passed away a few years ago now it makes me sad that I sold it.

RE: Your First Bow???
My first one was a Bear Whitetail hunter. A few years later I bought a Golden Eagle something (?). I just remeber the riser ws black as well as the wooden limbs were black. The I bought another Golden Eagle, the one with the spacer blocks under the limbs. Finally, I still haev my High Country Royal Hunter. It has served me well for the past 10 years. I'm ready for something a little smaller and lighter though, leaning toward a BowTech.

RE: Your First Bow???
My first was a Browning Cobra, 50# draw. Now it hangs in my loading room, as the limbs delaminate. I put my own custom, camo paint job and stabilizer on it.
My son's first bow was a Seneca. Now he has a BowTech Rascal. Phil. "Could you guys be quiet, my dad's trying to shoot."<img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle> |
RE: Your First Bow???
my cousins forked lightning jennings for 50 bucks! Went trad the next summer and never looked back!

RE: Your First Bow???
I suppose my first real bow (not counting branches with shoe strings tied to the ends) was a red fiberglass Red Bear that I bought for $20.00 new.
From there I had a couple different recurves, but bought a compound the first year I was going hunting (couldn't handle a hunting-weight 'curve). It was a 1984 PE Phaser II. Round wheels, 50% let-off, shot it instinctive. Nice bow. JRW |
RE: Your First Bow???
I remember fiberglass bows also. Mine was faded yellow and white if I remember correctly. Then I thought I was reall hot when I bought a Martin - warthog magnum from a local AUTO parts store. I bet I shot this bow for 6 years and then bought a PSE Mach Flight 4R. What a difference. Man have we come a long way or what.

RE: Your First Bow???
trapperDave I got my first bowkill this year with my Fred Bear Black Bear, it is camo and has a 65 pound draw weight, I bought it brand new, hunted one season with it, set it aside for over 15 years and picked it back up just a few years ago. It still shoots great and obviously it still works. I will admit though that I will be replacing it after this season.

RE: Your First Bow???
My first was a Ben Pearson Spotted Hunter recurve I bought in 1964 66 inches long 45#. I never owned a bear whitetail. My first compound was an Allen 40-50 sooooo very slow by todays standards but so fast then.

RE: Your First Bow???
A Martin Lynx with 35 and 50% letoff roundwheels. Still have it and do some bowfishing with it. Got it back about 82' or 83'. Got back into archery with it a few short years ago.

RE: Your First Bow???
My first bow was a Browning Xcellerator that I bought, while in high school, in 1988 out of the newspaper classifieds. It came with a dozen bright orange XX75's....I still have a few of those hanging on my wall.

RE: Your First Bow???
My first bow was a yellow fiberglass recurve out of the JC Penny catalog, that I promptly got taken away many times in my youth. Then I started shooting a Bear recurve that belonged to my father, broke a limb on that and bought a Bear Magnum Hunter. Kept that through college and got a Golden Eagle pro Revolution and am now shooting a BowTech BK II. Good post Q2MD, trips down memory lane are great.

RE: Your First Bow???
My first rig was back in about 1978 when I was in Middle School. It was a Browning Explorer II. (a laminated wood riser 4 wheel compound) Boy, did I have fun with that bow!
PRACTICE....PRACTICE....PRACTICE......SUCCESS! |
RE: Your First Bow???
My first & only bow so far is a Pearson Stryker.Bought it used at a local gun shop just because I liked the looks of it.It is a great bow.Ran right over it with a Ford Ranger 4X4 once when my son left the case on the ground behind the truck.Had to put on new sights but everything else was OK.

RE: Your First Bow???
A really neat laminated longbow which was my grandpas. I shot it when I was about 8 to about 12 (70's early 80's). I pissed off my dad cause he caught me shooting his aluminum arrows with broadheads into the dirt (aluminum arrows were the next big thing after fiberglass I guess). What I wouldn't give to find out what happened to it!
First compound bow was a used pearson Mach I. Ugly but still shoots great. Twaaang! No amount of SVL technology could possibly quiet that bow! Kirk |
RE: Your First Bow???

RE: Your First Bow???
I had plenty of toy bows when I was a kid and still have two of them and some wooden arrows the kids play with now. My first real bow was a gift from my little brother 3 years ago, it is an old PSE compound, round wheel, 57# max pull, 48" axle to axle, no idea what model it is, but it works for me for now. It has given me 2 kills, no misses. When the budget allows for it I will upgrade to a better one.
The best of luck in all your hunting endeavors!!! God Bless, Dave |
RE: Your First Bow???
My fist bow was a fiberglass recurve 35# shot alot of squirrels and acouple of rabbits with it. heck back then it was really something to see a deer track let alone a deer. had to drive over to eastern shore here in maryland to see deer
|
RE: Your First Bow???
My first bow was a wooden limbed Pearson "Grey Ghost". Heavy, slow, and ugly, but I tell ya what, I shot that ol' boy straight and killed many a deer with it. It's strange, now that I am shooting a top of the line get-up, I can't say I shoot it any better....makes ya wonder if I should still be shooting that ol' klunker.
