Keeping Composure
Whenever i see a buck coming through the woods that i know im gunna shoot, i tend to get a little rattled and shakey....whats the best way for me to keep my composure when the time comes to make a shot on a deer so that i can make a clean lethal shot.
You can pound bullseyes all day in the back yard withyour short sleeve shirt on, and in a solid, comfortable stance. But when your in the woods in your bulky warm cloths, standin on a 1' by1' platform 20' off the ground starin at thatmounter who you cant tell if hes 20 or 25 yards away what does that mean now? Well, some call it practice...But u cant practice for this....because this you never knew would happen....so what were u practicen for? You were practicin for20 & 25 yard shots...but this was never practiced.....so when you drill him through the lungs and he runs 35 yards and keels over dead.....its just that much more sweet. |

Experience. It's a difficult thing to do. Control your breathing, and TRY to relax.
I also read once that shooting does makes you a better buck hunter, and the reason is because you have the EXPERIENCE shooting under pressure. |
RE: Keeping Composure
Experience is the key to performing, but I'll tell you, the day I DON'T get excited when I hear those steps in the leaves or see that dark figure moving through the woods, I'll quit hunting.

i practice almost all summer i wont even put anything new on my bow after august just so i dont have any problems but i still cant tell yah how i do it when a deer comes in and the heart starts trying to come out of your chest and the legs start to shake then all of a sudden that deer steps into the shooting lane you know its at 20 yards my mind goes blank i try to steady my bow and get the pin on the deer where i want it then let it fly hoping all the practice payed off i am lucky in that i have only had 2 badhits in all the years ive hunted of course i have missed in the last 3 years i missed 2 deer i was shooting on 1 my sight was off i shot over a doe and the second my broad head arrow combow caused the arrow to drift i changed to a mechanical this year untill summer when i can sort it all out i still like my muzzys

you cant, thats the greatest feeling in the world!!!

RE: Keeping Composure
Shoot more does as mobowhuntr stated. I still get that feeling but I have learned to control it enough to get off a shot.

RE: Keeping Composure
no one stated don't stare at the horns....biggest buck I killed,I didn't realize he was as big as he was. I knew he was a buck and at least an 8 point. I focused on my routine and it was almost like clock work. Drilled him at like 28 yards when I walked up to him, I saw he was my biggest. If I had seenthe actual size of his horns, I would have missed...

RE: Keeping Composure
Once I know the deer is a shooter,I don't look at his rack.I could not tell you if it is an 8 or a 10.I llok for width, mass hight and than off of the rack.Sure I still get that rush, but I tell myself calm down and get that shot.Don't allow yourself to get so excited that you talk yourself into rushing the shot.If you need an extra step for the perfect shot wait.Or you may end up with tree soup.

RE: Keeping Composure
According to Bobby Worthington shooting everything from when you clip your release on until you release your arrow should be nothing but muscle memory, your subconcious should and will cover all of that. I have a phrase that I say to myself while all of that is going on and I focus on the saying and the spot on the deer I want to hit.
