I'm a little confused about this statement:

Does that mean --don't sit your bow down because you may need it for a follow up shot or that you should not have continued forward at all but backed out and waited instead??

It must be nice to live in kansas, I am from MI, and If I had that kind of action I would write a book. thats a nice deer. great job
