Are you guys honest with the boss????
Keep reading about everyone calling off and taking vacation days. My older bosses never really bought in to my call offs when hunting season rolled around. I hated guessing on the rut dates because vacation days had to be put in wks in advance. Whenever I would see deer laying all over the roadways everymorning, I always ended up with a bad case of the $hips the following day. Be honest, how many of you do this.

RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
I don't do it as I can hunt evenings after work and I take the month of Nov. off.

RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
welll life is sortaaaaa easy for me right now. i was working 3 days a week till i paid off my books. now im down to 2 days a week. BUT i do goto college full time so lifes kinda a jugling act..factor in atleast 20+hrs hunting a week and im cutting into sleeping time by the time i study and such..but im getting it all done..i have however requested days off and told them it was for school:) hey..what they dont know dont hurt them..and if i tag my buck before then it WILL be used for school..i got projects..volunteer hours etc i gota get done..got time but if i get my tag on a buck early itll be a sigh of relief though its not effecting my school so far...
hey it actually HELPED. thought of what to do a MAJOR project on sitting on stand..couldnt help but to notice OBVIOUS signs of previous logging. hey! perfect project...and i can do the field work for it after the hunts while im there..and hunting motivates me to get my school work done early and good so i have time to hunt..if i got work to get done i WONT hunt.. |
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
Pretty easy for me, my bboss's are hunters so I just tell them I'm taking off a day or will be in late/off early. Pretty nice!

RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
I don't do it. I either put my vacation down, like in March, for that years deer season, or I go to work. If I am home, I am sick. If I call in sick, I am sick, and I mean full blown. I go to work with colds , sinus trouble, and all that stuff all the time. It sucks, but that is just the way I am, I would feel too guilty.

RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
Lucky for me, I have a government job as a contractor for the Air Force......I can use my sick leave for any reason at all, as long as I give 30 minutes notice before my shift starts at 7:15 am.....Of course, by that time, I'll have already been on stand for an hour and a half....

RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
My boss is a hunter and he knows what it's like this time of year. He is more of a rifle hunter so he takes those weeks off himself.
|
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
I'm so stressed and over worked you would have no idea. I do set my own schedule in away based on what is need to close biz. I did tell the main culprits of my busy schedule, I'm not traveling next week, I'm hunting. This is only the beginning. The rut will follow soon. I figured I was looking for a job when I found this one and I will be looking for a job when I find the next one.;)

RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
My bosses know that I am a hunter, but they know that I take my job seriously as well. I dont call in, but I do schedule some vacation time the end of Oct. They know why, and they give me some leway with my schedule in November also, but I dont take advantage of it (not much anyway). I gave up a free turkey hunting trip to Kansas a couple years ago because of inventory and they respected and remember that. I am an assistant manager at Wal-Mart.

RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
we are allowed up to 3 days in a row and only get marked as 1 absence. so i always schedual vacation for the last week of the season (2nd week of november) and i let them know ahead of time that i am taking a 3 day absence allong with my vacation. My groupleader is a big time bowhunter so he understands. any days i call in before that i dont give them a reason (they already know)

RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
I'd feel quilty as well. I savemost my vacation for the hunting season. We also have like 4 days of short notice which is actually our sick days and can be broken into two hour segments. Basically avoid being sick or work sick to save these days for hunting.

RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
Yes..we have a new boss this year who is as mean as a snake. As a Christian I am straight forward. He ask me in July if I would work for him after school tutoring kids. I said ,"Yes, if you give me hunting days off when I want them." He said ok. I'm taking 7 days off to go to Missouri in Nov. and I took a bow hunting day off last week. We can take 9 personels off per year. I have 45 days saved up.

RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
I can pretty much take vaca. any time I want even the next day as long as there is sombody left to cover. Works out pretty good no white lies.
|
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
I get most days off that I want in deer season. My bosses are both hunters and about half the shop hunts. Most of the guys are fist day hunters, so its a ghost town at work on opening day. I never call in sick, I always just say I won't be in today. That way I'm not lying about anything.

RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
Yep, I am honest with them and they still hate it. But I am in the top 3% overall in the company in terms of performance out of 400+ others that are in the same position so they can deal with it or I will go make $$$ elsewhere. [8D] I am in sales, so it prevents me from taking time off at certain times, as I need to hit a quota every month. If I plan extended vacations ( more than just a 3 day weekend) I plan it for the beginning of the month unless I get way ahead of where I need to be in sales for the month then I take more days off. I often earn paid hunting days off as part of performance contests/bonuses. ;)

RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
I am. I teach school. So I get 2 weeks at X-Mas. 4 days for Thanksgiving. 4 for a Fall Break and 3 Months off in the summer. We get 15 PDO's a year on top of that. Paid Days Off. The school year is 180 days. Last year I worked like 162 days. ITs nice.

RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
I can relate.... I'm in I.T. (I mean, I.T. - as in I am "IT" - a one man I.T. Dept at my company). Pffffft - getting time off is always apain and you have to jump through hoops to get it.[:'(]
The worse aspect is that I am the only guy in the Admin/HR dept (yeah, they lumped I.T. in with the main Admin dept. Go figure...) So, my main Dept manager is the HR lady, who always goes by the book no matter what. [&:] I took the whole week of Thanksgiving off and the first part of the week after for rifle season. You'd think I committed a heinous crime for asking for that time off! [:@] All the ladies in admin think I am crazy for spending time in a deer camp and wanting to go out and kill beautiful animals (no, they are not PETA freaks, but they don't care for hunting). I mean, I'm 45 years old.... Istill got a long ways togo before retirement. God, please let me hit the lottery, so I won't have to put up with corporate B.S. anymore!!!!!!!!!! Butch A. |
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
My boss and I are really good friends. In fact I just stood up in his wedding in August. He knows I take my vacation depending on weather and that I may even call in the morning and take vacation just as I did on Wednesday.
|
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
I just hunt Saturday mornings mainly. Tomorrow is my first and boss will be there as well. :-)
|
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
I work for a small business (about twenty people spread across two offices). My manager here hunts, so he is cool. And the company owner in the other office got a hind quarter off the only deer that I have killed, so he is cool with it too.

RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
At my old job I pretty much had everything scheduled out and could adjust my start/stop times to hunt more. I don't really think I called off to hunt many times if at all. Now fishing on the other hand.....I'd call of in a heartbeat cause you couldn't really know in advance what the water levels and conditions were going to be like. Our policy was such that your time off was your time, didn't need to be sick or really have a reason.
Now the job I am currently working is different. It's weird shifts and I have no vacation/sick days. If i need to I won't hesitate to call off, I just don't get paid that day. It's certainly not a job worth stressing over. |
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
YEP !!! I'm a firm believer that honesty is the best policy, even if I do have buck fever ! ! ! ! !
|
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
Just read my signature....that about sums it up!!
All work and no play....you all know the rest. I won't call in on busy weeks or in the middle of big jobs but if I need a day off I take one and mostof the supervisors are the same way andprettyflexible. |
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
I work my butt off the other 11 months out of the year: very few sick days, lots of overtime, and no serious vacation time otherwise, so they let me slide for the 30 days around the rut. Been here 5 years now so everyone expects it and enjoys my stories.
|
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
Location location location. When I want to go hunting (usually I'll get the itch about 4 oclock), I go to the gunsafe in my office and get my gun, then to the closet in the bathroom to get my gear, walk out the door and into the woods.Last year I did this once and it was 45 minutes from walking out the door to a completelyfield dressed doe.
|
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
Yes, my boss knows this is my time of the year. I work out of the house and when I disappear for while, when I get back online, he just asks, "How big was he"? He know I see some nice bucks and chase them from mid october to mid November.
In fact, he called me Tuesday and said, I see the weathers getting cold on Friday, I assume you'll be starting late? I put in a ton of extra time with after hours customer support so he doesn't mind me taking some time here and there. |
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
Well, I work for myself and get paid by the hour, so I can take anytime I want off.
Of course, I don't get paid if I don't work, but that's OK! |
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
i can get off of work whenever i need to. my boss is very understanding.
school on the other had is a bit more problematic. |
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
I work my butt off all year and when the deer hunting season rolls around, my boss is very understanding to giving me days off at short notice. I schedule some days on the calendar and let her know I will have to change them based on the success of my hunts. Now if I did this all year rather than a month or two every year, she might feel differently.
|
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
My bosses don't mind if I leave early they are both hunters. I do not call off though. After work and Saturdays are enough for me.
|
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
I believe in mental health days and there is no better place to get mentally healthy than in the woods.
|
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
My last three bosses have been
Deacon Deacon And now a brother, if I lie, I am in trouble! |
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
Well my boss is God, and I think He knows!
|
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
i get to make my own schedule:D
|
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
I never have to do that as I can work in the morning before work and the evenings after. But, if I shoot a deer they dont have any problem with me coming in late.
|
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
I usually use most of my vacation time for hunting. But there are times when I just need to get in the woods and haven't put in for vacation.
I tell my boss that i am going to be sick the next day. And he understands. |
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
My boss is a good friend and we get off early of work or we will start late to work great working with guys that all love to hunt
|
RE: Are you guys honest with the boss????
I am "The Boss" and the only serious Hunter in the place so life is good...If only that damn cell would quit ringing (vibrating) with every little problem!.
