Cool encounter with buck growl
#1
When I first saw drury talking about his new product "The Growl" I was very sceptical. With over 30 years of experience I had never heard it. Well that all changed thursday evening in Iowa. I was in a tree just inside a bean field edge. Lots of fresh scrapes along the edge. A nice two year old came out and started working a scrape just twenty yards from me. A few minutes later a pair of coons came walking under my stand. The buck heard them and gave them a nasty look followed by a series of three long growls. The coons backed off, but kept trying to enter the field. The buck would not let them intothe field. He walked them off twice till they finally gave up and went back into cover. Guess I will be buying a growl tube now.

Why, to scare raccoons back into the woods? Did any other bucks come running into the field?

Seriousy Rob this was at end of hunting hours and I waited several minutes for the buck to move off. When I finally walked out I still ended up spooking him and another nice buck.

Rob... you got to remember... these were Wisconsin racoons.[8D][&:]
Aside from Robs obvious answer, you've never heard it in 30 years, I've never heard it in 40 something years... and yet you want to buy a $20 thing to make a noise that's rarely heard or answered. I'd venture to say, not only will you scare away the racoons as Rob says, but you'll scare away 90 percent of the bucks that might otherwise walk past your stand. It's suppose to bea dominance thing I presume. I'd rather use a plain old grunt call... (if I really need to,... like if the animal is passing out of range) that "MAY" get a deer's curiosity up. I don't think I want to challege anyone within range to see who's the baddest. Get him in and I'll decide if he's the baddest.
