All Day Hunts?

We're all aware of the importance of being in our stands all day during the rut to capitalize on this oppertunity to catch a buck off guard. How many of us actually do this? Just curious, and no BSing.:D:D

Hunted all day many of times. I enjoy it. If I get tired of it I go home. When the rut is on I find that 10 to 1 is the hot time for chaseing. But since I'm already there at 1 theres no since in going home.

I've done it a few times and would consider doing it more often if their were monster deer roaming the woods. During the rut I normally hunt from sun-up until ~2:00pm. Then I ease out and take a break and either call it a day or head back to another stand for the last hour & a half or so before dark.

Every time I hunt in the late season I stay on stand all day.

Roughly 15 days a year. Dark-thirty 'till dark-thirty.

RE: All Day Hunts?

Most of my (archery) hunts are all day (1/2hr before sun till 1/2hr after dark). If I make the drive (min 1.5hrs) and have put in all the work with stands and scouting I don't want to miss a minute of the season, plus most ofmy stands are permanent with large platforms so I can stand up, stretch, and touch my toes.
Last day of season last year I spent 10hrs in -15c, it snowed for1/2 the time, hanging off a tree in a tinylock-on stand, but I still had a tag and knew it would be a long time till I had the chance again.

Dark till dark approximately 60 days of the season. OR until I fill my tags.

I hunt dark to dark many times during the season. but not all the time!

RE: All Day Hunts?

I've only done it dark to dark a few times.
I just need a mid day break I guess.
I know I should stay all day more often but like my hunting partner says
"when it stops being fun, why do it?"

I usually get to my stand about an hour before sunup and stay til about 10-11am
I then still hunt/sneak towrds my partners stand. I have shot quite a few deer during my "sneaks". Besides, it's fun for me to see how close I can get to his stand before he sees me. Often I get to the bottom of his tree! No wonder I shoot more deer than he does!
Then we head to the truck for lunch. Sometimes we go into town for lunch.
We'll even take a short nap once in a while.

Back in the stand about 1 pm. Hunt til 1/2 hour after dark, stay about another 15 minutes and then get down and meet him at the truck or go to the truck and drive to get him depending on which stand he is in. He is 70 years old and can't walk as far as I can.

We hunt for the challenge, friendship and FUN. We are not out to torture ourselves over it.
We shoot plenty of deer this way.

I do have to hand it to you guys that can hunt all day though.
Maybe not the biggest bucks but we aren't going to starve!

RE: All Day Hunts?

I sit in my stand for 12 hours a day during the rut. Deer move at all times during this part of the season and you never know when that big buck might come your way in the middle of the day.

i do it almost everyday that i hunt, no bs, lol.......makes for a long day...i'll get down once, maybe twice to pee, other than that i'm sitting there....i do get down occassionally to stalk around, it breaks up the day, so when i get back from my stalking, i have the afternoon hunt....but not always, i dont like leaving scent all around my stand...the way i look at it is,i dont walk the distances that i do just to walk back out a couple of hours later...

I sit as long as I can when the deer are on the move. I must say however that the older I get the colder I get. I remember hunting in the snow in wet sneakers and a pr of levi's when I was young. Now when it is really cold, (like my wifes heart) it gets tougher.Thank god for a good pair of 1000gram insulated boots and coveralls.

RE: All Day Hunts?

I couldn't agree with you more huntnma, I don't travel to Alberta during the peak of the rut, mid Nov, to walk a mile to my stand just to hunt 4 or 5 hrs. Not to mention the $5000 I spend on this hunt. Up there you can see the buck of a life time come past your stand at ANY moment and that's what helps me sit for 12 hours a day, 6 days straight.
I will admit, this is not easy and requires alot ofdetermination but that's what hunting is about.

I try to hunt all day but I cant harldy do it, unless its gun season and I have a comphy box stand with a piss jug and a packed lunch, in the box stand you can move around a bit or stand up and stretch. Also its hard to do at my camp b/c there I am the dedicated hunter because I stay till about 1ish, where everybody else is outta there stand about 10am, lol. Its nice to get back to the camp and share the AM stories, grab a bite to eat and head back. Next year I am going to hunt all day long no matter how much of a hard time they give me about hunting so hard. I eased up to my stand about 3pm last year (i though i was getting there early) but I was wrong, there was a big 8-pt standing browsing in one of my shooting lanes. I allmost shot but just couldnt get a steady rest. I ended up watching him for about 15 minutes before I tried to move into a better spot and got busted. Didnt see anything the rest of the day, [:@]so now I am a beleaver they move in the middle of the day. I hope hes still around!!!

Ive done it a time or two, just makes along day, but the big bucks will move all day long during the rut, when most of your hunters have came out and went home

RE: All Day Hunts?

First couple weeks of bowseason (last 2 weeks of October) I'll just go out for morning and afternoon hunts 3 hours each. I kind of try not to hunt my "honey holes" too much during the October lull. Plus I like to keep my stinky butt out of there as much as possible leading up to the action.
Most of November I'll sit dark to dark. That gives me the last 2 1/2 weeks of bowseason (including the rut and pre rut;)) and the first week of gun season. After the first week or so of gun season I am about whooped. The deer have gone to underground tunnels. I go back to morning and afternoon sits/stalks.

I love the all day hunts and enjoy being the first in and last out on the public land I hunt. Even though I feel as if I have enough energy food and water, Iam alwaysdrained on the way home and fell dehydrated. To help pass the time during the weekends I check the football scores and play those stupid games on my cell phone!

RE: All Day Hunts?

Another point to ponder is that it's the hunters who get up to leave the woods at 10 or 11 to go to camp or what ever, who could well be pushing a buck past your stand. Food for thought.;)

Yeah i always stay out in my stand all day long mostly during gun season.

RE: All Day Hunts?

I normally do not stay on stand all day. Ill stay till around 10, go eat, and go back around 3 or 4. I know im missing some of the best time to be in the woods, but i cant take it. Id much rather enjoy it than turn it into work. However, if there is a big buck in the area or the weather is just perfect and im seein deer everywhere, i will stay all day.

RE: All Day Hunts?

I do it quite often during the Rut. Dawn to dusk in the same tree, only move if the wind changes. I started doing it about 7-10 years ago after I got to my stand at 12:30 when a huge buck comes by with a doe while I'm half way through my climb to the stand.
Last year was the first time that I've ever shot anything on an all-dayer. A nice nine pointer come by just after 2pm,(eight hours I was in the tree) and he was the only deer I'd seen all day.
One other time I'd sat like six all-dayers in a row (not the same tree all six days) when at 3:30 I got a shot and missed a huge buck. Really made me mad.
Its not unusual to see a different buck come by every couple hours when the rut is heating up.

Almost everytime I hunt whether it be early season, during the rut, or the late season I sit all day. It took lots of practice for me to sit all day so I try to make a habbit of it. Besides If you sit in the morning but go home around 10, how do you shoot a deer from your couch?
