Attempted Buck rescue bad ending (pics)

My son and hunting buddy Dalton discovered this buck while riding his bike down the road today. it appered he had gotten stuck in the mud in a feeder ditch. My son heard some water splash and peered into the ditch and seen tines sticking up and rode home to tell me. We decided to try and get him out so he could live on and he would be a great buck to pursue in the upcoming hunting season. we had watched this buck all summer in the fields around our home. A couple relatives and some people passing by helped us attempt to rescue him. I managed to get a rope around his antlers in a way that when pulled out we could let go of one end and pull the other to unhook him so he could run off. We managed to get him out, but when released he slithered back down the enbankment. attempt number two, we decided to drag him further into the road. with roap released we watched him only to figure out he was parralized in the back end. He could not move his rear legs, only the front ones. We were totatly bummed out. We got this all on film by the way. I made the decision to call the authorities, It was either a slow death in the ditch or be put out. While waiting on the authorities he managed to drag himself back down the embankment. They showed up and dispatched the deer. We were issued a form to take Him home. We kept some meat and im going to europeon mount him for my son. I also plan on sending the footage in to north american whitetail for a possable muzzy monent. The buck must have been a warrior, his right eye was gone and his left ear had a tear in it. looked like some injury from last years fighting. Its just ashame the outcome wasnt better. Dan

Thats to bad, he would of been a nice one to hunt. Great effort on you and your sons part. It's nice to see people trying to help in situations like that. Maybe you can post a pic of the europeon mount when you get it done. Should be a nice mount!

Thanks for sharing!

The world's a cruel place sometimes, isn't it? And people say hunting is cruel....hmph..... Well done. Well done.

Sometimes we wonder if the bucks we persue make it through the hunting seasons for another year, then they have to dodge vehicles and all the other perils they go through on a daily basis.

Thanks for sharing, I'd almost bet that'd make a Muzzy Moment.

Probably got hit by a car.
I can sympathize. I tried to rescue a nice buck caught in a fence last year and it ended the same.
Slipping an arrow in his ribs while walking thru the woods would have been a much nicer way to go I'm sure. Sometimes we are dealt a losing hand from the start, but must play it anyhow.
Your motives are admirable.

Good on ya for trying to free that buck. A real shame it didnt make it as it would make a fellow bowhunter very happy if it happened to stumble into his path. Good ethics man.

Maybe it was hit by a car and ended up in the ditch whereyou found it paralized, no telling how long it had been there, mother nature can be cruel sometimes. Great vidieo piece and super effort. Peta calls us heartless, umph.

i feel for ya too......the truck in fron of me one night spooked a button buck , it got tangled up in the fence, he broke his back... the landowner came out and put him out...with a hammer to the head and a slit to his throat, litterally took 3 seconds to end it's suffering...i was freaking out that he wanted to kill it this way but he didnt have a gun on himand it was late at night, so this was the quickest way for him to kill it...i still got pics of me and that button buck somewhere....when an animal is that bad off, it's so sad, but it had to be done...y'all did right by that buck!

That's too darn bad ,it sure would have been nice to get a shot at him this early bow season ,but I guess that's the power of mother nature .
i guess it just wasn't meant to be .

Thanks for the kind words guys. Im sure any of you would have did the same thing. This one kind of got to me. I had a hard time getting to sleep last night thinking of all the events that happened yesterday and when i did go out i dreamed of deer all last night. I got to thinking last night, my son had told me last week, that a guy we know who works at a coal mine a couple miles down the road from me, had stoped by and told him that he was seeing a very nice buck crossing the ditch down the road from me on his way home from work a couple of times. Im guessing this is probably the one.

Not to sound like I'm steppin on anything previously posted here, but before we start passing around the tissue box.............

Sure it would be nice (not great) to have just 1 more deer (some unfortunately justsee it as a set of antlers). But this is an extremely rare situation where humans are involved in rescueing a deer from some sort of dire situation.

Mother nature coming thru - STEP ASIDE!

Her house is a VERY BIG and can be very cruel. Deer seccumb (sp?) to various things in places where they are usually never discovered.

Certainly it is not the greatest thing in the worldthat it had to be dispatched. Like Rickmur said it was probobly tagged by a car before it wound up in the hole.

Some may not agree with me but what I guess I'm getting at is it's just another lap in the circle of life.

Great effort on trying to save it. I think that's a great example of the quality of people we have here. Sure, there isn't anyone on these boards that wouldn't consider that guy a shooter but at the same time, we are concerned for the well-being of the deer. So many times, hunters are portrayed as mindless rednecks. You won't ever find the liberal media running a story about a hunter trying to save a life.
