I shot my First elk
I shot my first elk on Sept 6 at 3pm. I had ben stalking all day an saw 3 elk prior to the one I shot. I jumped her (a calf) at 20 yards while stalking a bull I had seen in previous years. She jumped and ran. I hoochie mamaed her and calmed her down. I stalked into 40 yards and let'er fly. Something went wrong. I hit the tree behind her. I don't know if my sites were off or she ducked. She ran and I hoochie mamaed her again. She stopped and looked at the arrow. It then began to rain and she ran off. I followed the direction she ran and about a quarter mile later I found her. I stalked in and then began to call. The hoochie mama made her turn and walk towards me. She was angling towards me near 40 yards. I thought it was 30 and put the 30 yard pin on her. I nailed her about an inch or two forward. My pins were off for trajectory. It was raining, so I followed the blood trail immediately. It was about 2 feet wide. She ran near 50 yards. Within 3 minutes of the shot, I had my first elk at my feet.

RE: I shot my First elk
What the heck are you guys so sad about??
Some people around here have lost sense of what hunting is all about. Look at the picture.......he is thrilled and it was a legal hunt. Jesus..........shoot what you want and be happy for others who do the same. EXCELLENT job man...........enjoy your meat, and the memories of your first successful elk hunt with a bow. Just ignore the stupid comments. Congrats to you on a fine hunt. ![]() |

RE: I shot my First elk
hhhhmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!! not a meat hunter???!!!!! not a trophy hunter??!!!!! what kinda hunter would you call yourself???????
|
RE: I shot my First elk
I say CONGRATS... You obviously had a successful (and legal) hunt so I say congrats...
You have one more elk then I have with a bow. |
RE: I shot my First elk
Edit.
Although I myself would not shoot a calf I do not believe it is a wrong move if you have the tag the DNR must have alloted the tag. The hoochie mama is a great call. Once again congrats on a successful hunt. |
RE: I shot my First elk
Wow, some of you should be ashamed of yourselves for even posting.
Congrats on your first elk! You should be proud of it, regardless of size. |
RE: I shot my First elk
i got within 20 yards of 4 fawns last year but i didnt shoot them, i knew i would get another chance at deer. if he didnt, whatever, nice elk.

RE: I shot my First elk
Don't get me wrong Im happy that this guy is happy. Must have been fun. It's just not "hunting" to me to shoot an animal that young. Just my opinion. And it's just makes me a little sad to know that calf lived just a couple of months of life, and it must have been a scared and bad way to go for a "baby".

And it's just makes me a little sad to know that calf lived just a couple of months of life, and it must have been a scared and bad way to go for a "baby". Nature is cruel - get over it. I'd say a clean killing arrow shot is probably the best way of any predator to take out an animal. No loud noise, no sharp teeth ripping apart your flesh. If you want to impart herd management, QDM, shooting adult animals, etc - DO IT! But dont expect others to follow your codes. After all, we're just predators like everything else. EDIT - reread the post i just made and it sounded like I was talking to just the person I quoted. Not the case, just so happened that I used his post as a starting subject. No offense meant. |

RE: I shot my First elk
Congrats!
Hey, I look at it this way, it was his tag and his hunt. If it were your tag and your hunt, you would be entilted to do what you want. It wouldn't be right for someone else to impose on you what size animalyou should kill. Besides, if there was to be a bad winter, this little elk would be one of the first to die of starvation or the first to be taken by a predator. I see many of the posts on here not being very supportive. Yet, if one of these same guys were to take their young son or daughter or wife, deer hunting and they shot a young button buck or young doe, they'd be proud of their first kill. That young elk should make some fine eating. Congrats again! |
RE: I shot my First elk
I am amazed by the negative responses to this. I think that too many "hunters" on here have been spending too much time in front of the TV watching hunting shows where the pros get all season in the best areas to hunt animals, and now they think that that is what hunting is all about. Forget that. As for shooting a baby, what do you think veal is? Have you ever had yearling meat? It is absolutely delicious, the best you can have. So don't knock someone else just because they aren't you and they don't think like you. It is sad how hunters can't just be supportive of other ethical hunters no matter how, where, or why they hunt.

RE: I shot my First elk
I agree congratulations on a fine hunt, i hope you have more successful hunts in the future.:D
|
RE: I shot my First elk
Congrats, but be careful with a quartering to shot.
She was angling towards me near 40 yards. |
RE: I shot my First elk
congrats man. Don't listen to the naysayers.

RE: I shot my First elk
I apologise for my comments posted. I didn't mean anything against anyone, expecially the threat starter. My first deer was a nubber, I had no reason to comment like I did. Sorry. Just got a week hart, (think I had flash backs when I saw that photo) when I shot my nubber at 12 years old I cried my eyes out when I walked up to him.

ORIGINAL: Washington Hunter Wow, some of you should be ashamed of yourselves for even posting. Congrats on your first elk! You should be proud of it, regardless of size. Also some of you may not realize that they isssuecow/calf tags in many areas. Some places in Wyoming require that you shoot two doe/fawn antelope before you kill a buck. What does it matter if it lived4 months or 3 years? It doesn't. Very well done on the first elk, I guarantee there won't be any better eating animals. |
RE: I shot my First elk
congrats i guess, thats awful its smaller than a whitetail. thats a waste of a tag
|
RE: I shot my First elk
Congrats...the trophy is in the eye of the beholder. One day I hope to be able to shot an elk...living in Texas, it is hard to do! Congratulations once again.

RE: I shot my First elk
after i posted i feel bad for what i said, im sorry and congrats if your happy and excited thats all that matters. sorry again
|
RE: I shot my First elk
ORIGINAL: tedrow congrats i guess, thats awful its smaller than a whitetail. thats a waste of a tag I personally would have held out for a mature elk but I will not bash a guy for shooting a calf. That's going to be the best tasting elk you'll ever eat. |
RE: I shot my First elk
I too appologize...I did not think before I posted. It was indeed your tag and if your happy with your kill, who am I to judge. I was wrong....I'm sorry.

RE: I shot my First elk
Good going there partner.Elk meat is tops.
Never shot one myself, C7 |
RE: I shot my First elk
I find it funny that nobody even asked him why he shot a calf. They're just quick to make snide or downright offensive comments.
I would however like to ask Stinkbelly why he opted for the calf and didn't hold out for something bigger ? Although at page 4 or 5, my post will likely be buried.:( Congrats on your elk by the way! |
RE: I shot my First elk
I shot my first elk on Sept 6 at 3pm. I remember my 1st whitetail with a bow a 40lb doe. I remember how I felt, It did not matter at that time how big it was as long as got it!! So does most everyone on this board? They remember there 1st? Not everyoneidia of a trophy is the same. Some on here don`t seem to understand that. again Congrats! |
RE: I shot my First elk
Don't worry about all the comments dude. Congrats:D
I know alot of us have shot fawns before even if most don't admit it. My first bow kill of last year was a fawn that had just lost her spots. I went back two days later and gother momma too. ;) |
RE: I shot my First elk
I Must firstly say congratulations on your success, i know that feeling that we all get when we shoot our first whether its the first of a species or the very first deer shot. An amazing feeling and a hunt you will remember for the rest of your life.
As for some of the comments you have received, i feel that we all hunt for various reasons and hunt in varying ways. I have witnessed a guy whom has little movement in his legs shoot a fawn and this was therefore his trophy and possibly only a few others feel the same way. WHO ARE WE TO DETERMINE WHAT IS AND WHAT ISNT A TROPHY TO AN INDIVIDUAL WITHOUT KNOWING MORE ABOUT THE HUNT OR THE HUNTERS CAPABILITIES. look at the look on the guys face and see the emotions he is feeling and be supportive and keep another hunter on this site and don't chase him away for because he has shot one fawn as many of us have it doesn't necessarily mean he is going to shoot more. Please give the guy a break and keep personal ethics to oneself. Take care and happy hunting to you all. |
RE: I shot my First elk
How many elk have you killed JNTURK????? Not many I assume, or you probably would'nt be making stupid comments like that. I guess EVERY deer you have EVER killed has been a trophy buck, or mature doe eh???? Apparently you have no idea how hard it is to kill an elk period, let alone with a bow, you should put your brain in gear before you start flapping your lips. If you can't say something positive, keep your opinion to yourself. Or, better yet, find another site to insult people on. Nice elk man, congratulations.
