Ok....since most of you helped me with my questions about mechs.....( it doesn't seem like I have the power to shoot them ) ....what about a fixed? I shoot a Hoyt MagnaTec...Carbon Express Maxima Hunter 250 arrows..28 1/2 " .......@ 55 lbs.....I have Nap Thunderhead 100 grain....I think I want to try something else.....I heard that Fuse makes a good one that flies well...any comments would be great...my fault for waiting so long, but now my season isa little over a month away, and I need to get this figured out. Thanks, Jay

Can you crank you bow down to get some more Power out of it?

Give Stingers or Muzzy a try, I don't think you'll be dissapointed with either head.

If the ThunderHeads work, why change?
If, however, you're looking for something different (better?), try the Magnus Stinger (Buzz Cut)...it's AWESOME!
Good luck!

RE: Recommend a Broadhead

That's part of it...they don't fly very well for me.....my Dad has them, and he has problems with them as well....I'm fairly new to this game, so spinning arrows and tuning broadheads is like me explaining how to fix a motor over the web....it's tough...I tried spinning a couple arrows...they don't seem to wobble..but they don't fly straight either...does it matter how much you tighten them? ot which way the blades are facing in relation to the fletch?

Illinoisbow 09-05-2006 07:37 PM

RE: Recommend a Broadhead

the magnus stinger buzzcuts are awesome... wicked sharp out of the box, and fly almost perfectly with your fieldpoints. They are great heads

Tarheel_Hunter 09-05-2006 07:38 PM

RE: Recommend a Broadhead

Get 'em tight! Other than that, I don't think it matters anymore about aligning your blades with your fletching. Too much offset/helical/etc.
I do know this....ANY little error in form will be magnified when shooting fixed-blade broadheads.
Lots of folks switch to mechanicals to compensate for poor form.
DON'T DO IT!
Get your form right...and consistent!
Have someone watch you shoot....or better yet, record yourself shooting. You'll learn a lot, and just maybe straighten' out those broadheads!

Now then....having said all that....spend $20 and experience the consistency of Magnus Stingers!

Good luck!

RE: Recommend a Broadhead

STINGERS :)!!! I had the same problem with NAP Thunderheads...they didnt fly right. So I bought some Stingers (4 blade) and they hit 1inch lower than my fieldpoints...and they are consistant. BUt like tarheel hunter said...fixed bh's do magnify any error in form.

RE: Recommend a Broadhead

Here's my short list of Fixed blade heads that I'd pick above all others(in no particular order):

G5 Striker
Slick Trick
Rocky Mountain Turbo
NAP Nitron

These are obviously not the only heads that will get the job done, they are simply my favorite list. All 4 have inherent built in accuracy due to their aerodynamic qualities. In short they fly great, even out of marginally tuned bows.
They are also very strong heads and now that the Slick Tricks have good blades all 4 are some of the most scary sharp that you will find right out of the package.
I have yet to see the new Slick Trick blades but I can say with hands on certainty that the other 3 have some of the sharpest blades you will ever see out of the package. When they make you nervous to handle.......they're sharp.[:-]

I know tuning and all the technical aspects of archery can seem overwhelming at this time.......don't stroke out over it, pick it up a little at a time. For now give yourself the advantage of chosing a head like the one above that will compliment your set up and currenttuning abilityand try to understand the hows and whys of tuning along the way.
A little understanding of "Paper tuning" will go a long way to help you get on the right track.
Right now most of all you need to get your tune as close as your ability will get you and then settle on a head and start to gain some confidence in it.

My Slick Trick blades are....welll, let's just say they're not as sharp as they could be. I've had them for a year or so. Do you suppose Slick Trick will exchange them for newer, shaper blades?
Good luck!

RE: Recommend a Broadhead

After over 20 years of bowhunting I've actually only ever used 4 different broadheads, why fix what aint broke right? Anyway, in my begining years I bought cheap Satellite heads, that's what they were but they've vastly improved.

I then went to Thunderheads, great head but dispised the way they assembled, I switched to Muzzy's early in my bowhunting career and continued to use them to date. They've never let me down. I also now use and can recommend Rocky Mountain Snypers, the first and only mechanical I have ever used. I was an anti mechanical person until 5 Shot opened my eyes with his testing, of course at the same time, improvements to mechanicals coincided and techincal improvements helped me to be swayed.

Thunderheads at one time,

Muzzy and Rocky Mountain Snypers.

Of course there are many more fixed blade heads including the Fuse/Innerloc line.

RE: Recommend a Broadhead

Tarheel,
I don't know if they would exchange them........?? I have 1/2 doz here myself and they are hand sharpened to a shaving edge but the factory edge was a little lacking. From what I am hearing the new blades are being made by some company in Germany and that they are indeed very sharp.
My suggestion would be to just use the ones you have for practice and get a set of the new blades for game time.
That's what I plan to do for mine.

You should see the Striker from G5.[:-]Holy momma they make the Montec look like a butter knife.

Been hunting for 20 years, and have experimented with tons of heads. My only regret is that I didn't shoot Stingers sooner...best head I ever shot. Razor sharp and fly better than field tips. You would love them.

RE: Recommend a Broadhead

I think at 55lbs you could still shoot a mech. broadhead. You could drop down to a 75 grain tip, which will give you a little more speedand shoot the RocketMiniblaster, which as a 1 3/4 in cut diameter, an awesome broadhead. But if you want to stick with 100 grain tip try the Rocket Hammerhead, it has 2in cut diameter and I bet they will still open with the poundage you shoot. I have used both of these mech. broadheads and they are awesome.

American Broadhead Co. Sonics have worked great for me this year. Two shots, two dead deer.

My accuracy/penetration and torture tests yielded the following:

No. 1 Slick Trick
No. 2 G5 Strikers

Did I test every brand? Nope, but I tested 8 different heads. For me, Slick Tricks do it all.;) Best of luck.

I dunno, a 28" 250 shaft at 55 pounds sounds a little light in the spine department to me. Could be why you're having difficulty with the Thunderheads?

Sounds like a job for a "mini" head like the SlickTricks.

Partsjay, let me make your search a short one. I've shot everything from Nitrons to to the cheapy's you can buy at walmart. All required fidgeting with this or that or to get to shoot properly. So I kept shooting mechanicals. I had sucess with mechanicals but doubt was always in my mind. SoI was looking for a fixed blade that didn't require me to be a bow guru to get to shoot good!

This year I picked up the new muzzy mx-4's 4 bladed 100 grain broadheads. FOR ME (qualifying statement!) These are the best out of the box, true flying, as accurate as field points, broadhead, out there. For 19$ for 3 including an additional practice set of blades, it's hard not to give them a shot. With the muzzy name you know you are dealing with quality for a good price. You can spend more, but for me, my mind is made up and I have more confidence going into this season then ever before!

i would go with NAP Crossfires, very durable, sharp, and they fly better than thunder heads.

RE: Recommend a Broadhead

I have used a whole gambit of heads. My favorite fixed heads are, Muzzy 3 blades, Sonic, and Slick trics. Mechanicals I like; Nap spit fire (I really like these), Nap shockwave, and steal heads. Those are my favorites. Another important consideration, Make sure your bow is well tunned, arrow is well tunned with the broad head of choice, and that you use the right cut diameter for the game you are after. I like to usesmall cut diameterfor thick skinned animals like hogs 1 1/8". I like a larger cut diameter for thinner skinned game like white tail1 1/4"+.

tried to order slick trick but they said to are on back order till the end of sept but the problem with that is the season come on the 15th, so i swapped with nap nitron have anyone shoot those and how are the because i knew how the slick tricks are...

G5 Montec's for me. Not as sharp as others but I have never had a problem with penetration. I always have clean pass throughs. There is very little to no tuning for them to fly right.

For a cut on contact, I shoot magnus stinger 4 blades and for an expandable I'll shoot the G5 Teken 2's....Both are amazing heads that I've never had any problems with.

With all due respect a 2" diameter cut out of a 55 pound bow is a recipe for a wounded deer. He needs a conservative diameter mechanical (1 1/4" max) or a cut on contact fixed blade like magnus stingers.

I personally shoot Magnus Stingers at deer. But there are just many, many good quality heads out there. In no particular order:

G5 Montec
Sonic Heads
Muzzy
Wasp Boss Bullet
Steelforce

your useing a good broad head. if your arrow flight with that head is
giving you problems try a different arrow.
in my lifes experence of bow hunting , 33 years ,i have used only 2 different heads, savora and the camlock wasp 100 gr.

Your broadhead is just fine but most out there now are in most respects "pretty good"
I have used Montec, Muzzy and Stingers in recent years.
